Argylle

tho, I get why they wouldn't do this, as it might have given to much away early on...
but, her seeing Rockwell's character as Argylle didn't really make sense, either... when it was later revealed that the Cena character was based on him

missed opportunity to get a few fight scenes in with Cena (he seemed under used)... like her seeing her own reflection as Argylle {or hearing his voice in her head} worked with the twist

what would have been cool if maybe she had blackouts during some of the fights and then you see her visualizing (Cavill's) Argylle fighting... then after the twist it's showed that it was actually her fighting , that her subconscious instinct, kicked in (but, because of her brainwashed conditioning she saw it as more of a out of body experience)

In what world would you give Matthew Vaughan a $200M budget?

I honestly wouldn't have guessed the budget for this one would be anything over $40-$60 million.

Like...why the Hell does a random spy based movie need a budget ranging from $200-$250 million? That's just astronomically absurd. And it means this movie didn't ever have a chance in Hell of being an actual financial success. :tearsofjoy:

But it wasn't her code name! It was her memories mashing up her real name and creating a fictional spy character.
their names being similar could be a coincidences too

maybe that's even how they met, she intercepted an encrypted message {mistaking "Argylle" for being an abbreviation for her own name} thinking the message was for her... shows up to find him instead

^that promo picture they used there, hits differently when you consider the plot twitst

I still can’t believe they sunk $200 million into this thing. It looked like it cost about 1/10 of that.

I think that number includes the rights for the film, not just the production cost, which is probably half of the overall cost. It's still crazy money to think of and as someone who was really looking forward to this I have to admit its flopping is very deserving. The only thing that worries me is that Apple might start rethinking releasing movies in cinemas due to back to back box office bombs.

I have to admit I didn't hate this but its not very good either. Sam Rockwell was far and away the best thing about this movie IMO and I honestly wish him and BDH were together in something else.

They had some really good/fun chemistry in this IMO.

Wow, this was a giant train-wreck of a movie... what did they spend that budget on??? Well, at least it squeaked by Madame Web at the domestic box office.. that's a win, right?? :o

Actors’ salaries and bad CGI, apparently. It really is amazing how some of the most expensive films are also the worst looking. I know the excuse with some Marvel movies is that they rush the VFX team and make last minute changes. But Argylle seem like it was in development for years so I’m not sure what the excuse is, other than Vaughn not being as good of a director as he thinks he is.

I watched this last night and not quite sure what to make of it. It's a bit of a mess. Sometimes entertaining, but most of the time, ridiculous. The film is trying waaaaaay too hard to be clever and stylish.

Remove the crappy CGi, the off-point humour and OTT theatrics, and have it as a serious action thriller about ...

an-ex spy whose repressed memories and/or PTSD have led to them subconsciously crafting a whole new existence for themselves - not quite Bourne's plotlines, but similar tangents

..... and it might actually have mutated into something interesting. Rockwell was by far the most watchable of the cast.

You and I both know that everything you suggested makes far too much sense to have ever been a possibility for the direction of this film.

Studio executives are still following the same formula: making failure after failure until finally someone is able to break through & do something different. Then they copy and paste those same attributes to every project for the next decade until they milk it completely dry & repeat the cycle.

In this case, we're still dealing with the Marvel effect, where every movie regardless of genre now has to have forced humor and can't be presented in a serious light that doesn't undermine the overall story that's being told.

Just curious, but why do so many spy movies and shows seem to revolve around a spy
losing their memory? They did that on Citadel too, although at least in that show, it was an intentional memory wipe thing instead of “spy goes on mission and suffers brain damage.” But anyway, it’s like Bourne and Long Kiss Goodnight did it and now every spy needs to lose their memory. It’s so tired. Do something else.

if that original budget included getting the story rights (of the books)/paying the actors... if they move forward with trying to turn this into a film franchises...
and with possible crossovers with Kingsmen
... I think even taking a lose on this movie in the long term, could still pay off

it's all about establishing this world/ these characters... now that the groundwork has been layed
they could do a lot more with it, to justify those expense

Probably has to do with the audience's relatability and having us think how cool it would be if someone normal and average was actually a spy.

I guess. But I think in this case, it would have been more interesting if
Ellie actually was just a really good writer who had this ability to envision brilliant spy schemes through years of research and just good intuition. Instead, it was just another Long Kiss Goodnight/Bourne ripoff.
