Arnold Schwarzenegger Returning For The Legend of Conan

Damn you guys are making me seriously want to read some Conan stories.

I have the novelization of the 1982 Schwarzenegger movie, as well as The Bloody Crown Of Conan , which includes the stories The People Of The Black Circle, The Hour Of The Dragon, and A Witch Shall Be Born.

Incidentally, IMHO, A Witch Shall Be Born should've been used as the basis of Conan The Destroyer. Instead we got a PG rated piece of action/comedy crap that used the name of Queen Taramis but nothing else from the story. Oh well, at least John Milius used the crucifiction scene from the story in his movie.

Yeah man, I have that original Arnold movie novel, as well as the Jordan Conan The Destroyer novels. Some moron must have not wanted them, got then for change at a second hand store. The CTD novel is interesting because people who Conan already met and killed show up in the movie which means they show up in the novel, as well as characters he's already had run ins with in the REH and DeCamp stories. It's a decent book, but it's trying to reconcile the time line into a movie novel.

There is also a nice collection of the Robert Jordan novels all into two volumes that goes nice with the the volume REH set. Though uneven the Jordan stuff is worthy of a read.

"A Witch Shall Be Born" is one of my favorite Conan tales, but it would need a major re-write for a Conan film as Conan is actually not in it that much.

True. But the basic story should have been used. Taramis being replaced by her evil twin sister. Conan having to rescue the real Queen Taramis from Shadizar's dungeons, etc. Most certainly have Wilt Chamberlain as the head of the mercenary army that helped the witch usurp her sister's rule.

Conan The Destroyer could have been great. Unfortunately after the first movie, Dino De Laurentis decided all of his movies would be more family friendly. Then the writers for Destroyer went through a bunch of Conan books and comics looking for names to use.

"What are going to call the evil queen?"

"Here's a story where he fights a witch named Taramis!"

"Wait. Isn't Taramis the name of the good queen the witch replaced?"

"Who cares! Use it anyway."

"What about the black amazon woman? What should we call her?"

"Here's a good name! Zula!"

"Wait. Isn't Zula a man?"

"Who cares! Use it anyway."

"What about the evil wizard guarding the key? What should we call him?"

"Here's a good name for a wizard! Thoth-Amon."

"Wait. Isn't Thoth-Amon a major villain that takes Conan years to finally defeat? This guy gets killed in like five minutes."

"Who cares! Use it anyway!"

Yeah, that's Hollywood for you.

I wish CTB2011 had been more like the noval. I thought the noval was way better than what we got. I use to have the CTD noval but at some point in time it got lost. As for Conan stories I would like to see turned into a movie I have to go with:
Hour of the Dragon
Queen of the Black Coast
The Frost Giant Daughter
The Devil in Iron

I liked the tone of the first Schwarzenegger Conan movie more than the Momoa version. The Momoa film felt too much like those Clash/Wrath Of The Titan's films

Incidentally, I'm in the middle of reading Hour Of The Dragon.

I wonder if that will be used as the basis of the new Schwarzenegger film. Conan loses his throne, goes on a quest and takes it back. Sounds about right to me.

Only REAL problem I see is the age difference. In the book Conan has not yet taken a queen and has no sons. By the time the character is Ahnuld's age, he likely has several sons fully grown (and knowing Conan's eye for the ladies, by many different mothers).

Same here. The Mamoa version put too much emphasis on the wire fighting and CGI effects.

I'll take practical effects and steel swords over CGI and plastic any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

That's the perfect way to describe the Momoa version.

The CTB'11 novel was pretty damn good. It drew upon all the sources available to Stackpole to fill out the story where the script obviously didnt. The importance of the Cimmerian sword is never touched upon (if you watch the movie the Cimmerian sword has a distinctive blade shape). The scene when they jump from the outpost to the ship, he's supposed to loose his sword and then he spends time the next day going through all the swords on the ship to pick one. They didnt have another Cimmerian one and he knew Zim used the Scimitar so he went with (as described) a claymore, till he tosses it in the final battle because he gets back his father's sword. In the movie he never looses his sword so when he gets back his fathers sword and just tosses his on film felt weird to me.

Also, the book went into how he grew up with Corin? Conaght? (I forget which one is the grandfather) after his father's death where his real heavy training started. Also where he rose to prominence at 15 as a great warrior in the raid on the Aquilonan outpost.

So is there any news on this movie? Or is it still just in the planning stages?

Still waiting on Arnold to come to his senses and step in as producer and continue Momoa's Conan.

No thanks. I want to see Arnold finish Milius's planned trilogy. Granted, it would have been better had he made this movie back in 2002 instead of T3. But I still want to see Arnold as Conan one last time.

This guy gets it.

Well said Thundarr. I'm guessing he's weighing in on whether to do Terminator or Conan next. Plus after Last Stand, I think he wants to be more hands on with Ten and *Sigh* Escape Plan.

I think he should do Conan next. He's not getting any younger after all. I also think he should scrap any plans on making another Terminator movie. I don't see how they can justify making the T-800 series look like a flabby old man who was once in great shape. At least with Conan it can be explained by too many years of wine and wenching.

I thought I read somewhere that Arnold's new Conan movie will retcon / ignore Conan the Destroyer. So it will really still be two movies instead of a trilogy?
