As a male, do you sometimes just crave a movie that's all style, no substance?

Well a lot of action films, I find, are not very entertaining to watch. I find myself much more entertained by something like Dead Man's Shoes, rather than a horrific violent revenge movie.

There can be action that has both substance and style, Oldboy, A Bittersweet Life, The Warrior. These spring to mind, granted, the western film companies tend to make action films generically so they lack the substance and even style in my opinion, however it is very possbile to have action that has substance and style, Hero also springs to mind, unfortunately Hollywood seems to have the inability to think outside generic boxes.

The Marine was pretty good, if your looking for a kick ass action movie.

I admit that a lot of times I do need a movie, like a Bad Boys 2 to balance out with something like a Cuaron's Children of Men. I feel some film buffs have become so "namby-pamby" that they dismiss a movie that has a lot of action as opposed to one that has more drama. Granted, I do enjoy some depth and drama on occasion, but that Y chromosome urges me to go see something that critics have bashed, but is so over the top with action and machismo I can't help but be enthralled. The guys know what I'm talkin' about. Or do they?:meow:
Some times, yes.

Sure, I can turn off my brain and watch some thin action flick, but most of the time I try to find the perfect balance of the two.

I look for depth and heart to films, but if a movie entertains the hell out of me without it I'm all for it.

It would get too heavy handed if every movie felt the need to be deep and meaningful and teach us life lessons. Movies are as much about entertainment as they are about art.

Rambo 2, still the best cure when love fails you. ;)

Flash Gordon and Big Trouble in Little China. There cheesy but thats what makes them good.

No I like films w/ substance.
If anything its girls who prefer films w/ no substance such as chick flicks.

No. If a film requires you to turn your brain off, it's not worth seeing

Rambo 2's racist and brute appeal is worth seeing every often to remind us of our bad side. We need it, and you know it. Without Rambo, the world would have been a far more boring place. :hyper:

Obviously.

Persoanlly, I think of action an drama as the same. You can do a movie with a lot of drama if you're good at that sort of thing, and same for action. For some reason drama is more respected in society. I think thats a load of horse ****. Horror too. Good horror is just as hard to do as good action as good drama. Of course a great movie has all of them, but I've never understood why everybody thinks drama is so much more important.

Entirely agree. There are MANY movies that touch people with their drama out there. MANY. But damn there are few movies that truly scare people. Why ? Because most good directors do not see horror as a good challenge or an important genre, which is stupid and ignorant, imo.

It's funny how the best movies in each category are made by great directors. Both Kubrick and Spielberg made two of the most important horror movie to ever grace the screen (Jaws and shining, of course). Same with Ridley Scott.

And good action ? There's a reason why Jackie Chan and co. made so many kung fu classic in the 70's and 80's, and that is because they were great at what they did. A steven Seagal or Van Damne movie will never achieve Chan or Bruce Lee's past success of quality.

I'd rank it as the least important stand alone genre, and easily the most overrated amongst film buffs.

Mindless action rules.

Transporter, 80's films, Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle, all excellent, although I am finding that I watch them less and less.

My fav genre is porbably drama, not becuase of the genre, but a lot of the best films I've seen would come under that genre.
Although I don't like classing things as genre's. I won't like/dislike something for the genre, you should always rate the film, not the genre.

My favorite guy movies:

  1. The Warriors
  2. Youngblood
  3. Streets of Fire
  4. Sho Kosugi ?spelling? movies
  5. The Big Brawl

The Warriors = My favorite movie of all time.

Sometimes I watch an action flick and I get really annoyed when they try to give it substance or get emotional. I watched Turbulence a while ago. It could have been great if they didn't put all kinds of forced emo bits in it. So yeah. I'd like a movie that is all style no substance. Crank looks like such a film, so do Shoot 'Em Up, Smokin' Aces and Grindhouse.

Ofcourse there are action movies where the substance does work. I'm not saying that every action movie has to be all action and style. But an all out action flick is good for a man. It's healthy ;)
