The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ASM2 the most under ratied CBM ever?

The most underrated CBMs ever is: Batman Returns, Hellboy, Hellboy 2, the Mask, and Hulk.

I recently looked at what Sam was trying to do with Spider-Man 3. He said he wanted to teach Peter forgiveness. Vulture was actually suppose to be a villain with Sandman before Avi forced Venom.

I rewatched Spider-Man 3 with this in mind, it's actually a better film. Take out everything Venom and black suit related and all the bad stuff in the film like emo Peter dancing and stuff is gone.

We see Spider-Man forgive Sandman for killing Uncle Ben, we see Harry forgive Peter for what he has done to him and blaming him for his father's death. It actually isn't half bad of a film. It's actually good. Not as good as SM2 but good ideas. You didn't really need the black suit with Sandman's train fight with Sandman. He was already angry and hateful and wanted revenge.

If people start giving SM3 more consideration, that's some real good to come out of the savage TASM2 critic reviews.

I never thought SM3 was bad. I thought it was ok. I will admit, I was disappointed in Venom but still, I thought it was ok. It wasn't a franchise ruining film like Batman & Robin or Superman 4 or X-Men Origins Wolverine. It was just ok.

I still feel Sam should have gotten one more shot with total creative control. Avi said he didn't want Black Cat because she was too similar to Catwoman. I don't get how that's a bad thing. So Raimi had the Vulturesses thing, he didn't like it. He quit. Avi's ruining everything.

So essentially the movies aren't underrated with the critics only the GA.

SM3 disappointed the heck out of me but I didn't hate it. I wont rush out to see it again in a hurry but I didn't hate it.

I would say underrated in the sense that people don't mention them. I mean I would say all the Hellboy films and the Mask is better than all the MCU films besides IM1, Cap 2, and Avengers.

Hulk is extremely underrated by fans. I mean people hate that film. I will admit when it came out, I was 10 and felt it was boring but it's not a film for a 10 year old. When I got older, I understood it and liked it.

So yea, Hulk deserves the title of the most underrated CBM of all time.

I simply feel most of the criticism are exaggerated or simply don't see what people are talking about to begin with. One criticism is flat out unfounded and not worth even discussing it's so ridiculous (I'm sure you can figure out which one I'm talking about) and the few issues I can understand are overshadowed by the films over-abundance of heart, zeal, energy, charm and go-for-broke attitude. This film has one of the best and most earnest takes on the human element of any superhero film ever made and that's what I love about it. It doesn't make a thinly veiled message about the world or politics (not that there's anything wrong with that. I just can't remember that last time a superhero film lost all of those pretensions. Even Avengers had this to a degree) or create some other allegory. It's just a comic book story, and one told with true passion for it's characters.


At first I was at odds with the reactions. When I love a film so much and it gets a divisive reaction I can't help but feel a little like "Am I wrong? What did I miss?" But I get over it pretty quick. I got over it with Hulk (one of the best superhero films ever made) and I got over it with TASM2. Both are among my favorite entries in the genre, and no amount of controversy will change that.

You're right about this film's take on the human element. I never felt as inside Peter Parker's head as I did here. I love how Peter-centric it is, in a way no other Spider-Man film has been.

Agreed it was ahead of it's time. People just wanted to see Hulk smash stuff but got a proper movie instead

I really like the movie but I have to agree with Ebert.

That's such a snobby, elitist attitude- As though you're sacrificing your dignity by watching a lowly "comic book movie". It's that pretentious attitude that still holds back the genre- that sci-fi and fantasy are somehow beneath straightforward drama, just because it's got costumes in it. But, people will believe whatever makes them feel like they're smarter.

What gets my goat is that Ang Lee did for the genre what Nolan gets all the credit for because they are "dark" and "serious" and "grounded". I'm not knocking Nolan, BB is my favorite CBM (one of my favorite movies ever really) and I greatly enjoy the sequels but Lee was the first to really get into the psychology of the characters like we've never seen before. And it's more faithful to the comics than people realize/give it credit for. Hulk isn't a perfect movie, but it's something of a flawed masterpiece imo.

Where the hell did you get that from? It has nothing to do with the fact its a CBM. It's more because people didn't like Hulk at all. Hulk was a disappointment. It was too complex for its time. It's one if those films you don't want to admit you like because plenty of people hated it.

It's pretty explicit:

In other words-the people intelligent enough to really understand/get/appreciate the film would never lower themselves by watching a lowly superhero film (because everyone knows those are based on cartoon characters for children, right?)

I loved it. Teared up at the end of the movie. I feel like it was a great sequel.
