if there are sequences visualizing what the heiroglyphics show that would be some crazy crap

In the script, they do describe what they look like.

how big are these aliens?

The Cthultu is about the size of the mountains themselves which are described bigger than Everest. So as you can imagine this thing is ****ing massive.

I am liking what I am hearing. I can't wait to see how Del Toro visually interprets the descriptions of Lovecraft's monsters. :word::up:

thre is no way that they would realese a 130 million R rated movie.

It will definitely be a difficult sale. That's why it hasn't been made already. Del Toro's been trying to get this movie made for over a decade.

Will it be something like an epic version of The mist?

I have the script there to read but for those that have read the book and the script how faithful is the script?

Del Toro is good at pinching pennies. $100 mil is a lot to spend on a horror film, but if Del Toro can get it made without going over that I think he'd be in business. The horror genre has been very stale for a long time, and this would really be a breath of fresh air (or fermented? lol) for the genre. Everything these days is a slasher flick or about vampires or werewolves or some dumb crap like that. The Cthulhu mythos however have not gotten much mainstream exposure, and yet they have an air of antiquity about them that makes them feel like they're very old and ingrained into our culture since they've been aped so many times by more popular works.

With Cameron backing him though, I think Del Toro stands a pretty darned good chance. I mean, Cameron made a two hundred million dollar chick flick that grossed over a billion dollars, and a 300 million dollar movie about blue cats fighting off a human invasion that grossed 2 billion dollars. And now he's making a freaking Black Eyed Peas concert in 3D. If Cameron thinks it will make money, the studios are happy.

so there a character arc for the protagonist?

Not really an arc. It's more focused on the terror of all the characters. The main character does leave behind his pregnant girlfriend
and she dies in childbirth. It doesn't affect him as much as you would think. And it's understanable. But it's more about survival. There's no time to lament when you're being chased by the things.

There alot of characters in this. I hope he goes for smaller names.

Actually Van Helsing is ripe to be made into a great movie and Del Toro was perfect for it, although this is the first I had heard of Tom Cruise being attached.

I haven't read the script for this, so I'm going to have to trust those who are saying it's amazing.

This film is just what Hollywood needs. A risky, tentpole horror film. I am so sick of studios playing it safe with the horror genre. If this film is successful, maybe it will pave the way for more big-budget horror movies.

True.

at this point, I would rather have a Vampire Hunter D movie. Or Castlevania

I read the script, and Jesus, I couldn't find anything wrong with it. I mean nothing could really be improved upon.

And for people who want to know:

The Cthulhu does appear in the script. But very briefly. And I dont think he's seen completely either. Just glimpses of him. It's basically a grand scale version of The Thing. I can't wait to see what everything will look like.

This could very well be Del Toro's best film yet.
How did you read the script?

Aliens, not Alien. He was referring to the Elder Things, those are only 6 feet tall.

Agreed, but with Cruise as Van Helsing it has the makings of another massive flop.

I highly doubt Del Toro would have want Cruise to star...but who knows:huh:

Can anyone pm me the script, please? :yay:
EDIT: Thanks to Hunter!

dude, homophobic much? i get the movie was bad as an adaptation, but you're like, going out of your WAY to emphasize how "gay" this movie was. now i'm against political correctness under most circumstances, but this was was a truly ignorant post.

edit: by the way, looking forward to this movie, del toro rocks.
I am just conveying what I know about the movie from the reviews. 90% of the reviews I've read have said that the gay sex was very gratuitous and out of place, especially for a movie claiming to be a Lovecraft adaptation. If someone made a movie called Cthulhu that was pushing a positive religious message on us I'd come down on it just as hard. Sexual exploration has no place in a Lovecraft story whether it's straight or gay, nor does a happy ending or positive message. Lovecraft's stories are dark, depressing, and devoid of any comfort whether it's physical or spiritual, and that is why they are scary.
Especially if it's gay, as Lovecraft wasn't very fond of homosexuals. :oldrazz:
The movie is like giving the middle finger to Lovecraft.

well with his homophobia, don't hold it against Lovecraft since it was just how it was back then; taboo.

Yeah. He was also a antisemite, but later married a Jewish girl, so maybe he later accepted men who like men as well. Or not. I dunno.

Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown is a good documentary about him, his works and the influence, if someone is interested.
