At the Mountains of Madness - Guillermo Del Toro's Next Project!

Meh, they aren't that similar. That's like saying Alien vs. Predator should've put the nail in the coffin for Prometheus since they have similar plots and first acts.

The Mountains script I read was by far Del Toro's best work ever.

now Pacific Rim has to make money for legendary. ATMoM needs to happen with Del Toro.

Actually, I'm pretty sure GDT said that Prometheus put the final nail in the coffin for this film. I guess there were too many similarities between the two stories.
i think Del Toro was afraid that if Prometheus is popular all over the world and a big money hit( it was not ) that then it would feel like del Toro is copying. now that Prometheus came and went and made only its budget back it doesnt mater.

I think what's happening is this:

Legendary wants to do 'Mountains' with Del Toro but they're waiting to see how 'Pacific Rim' fairs. In the meantime, Legendary wants to keep the relationship alive til then, hence a smaller budget film (Crimson Peak) to keep Del Toro happy (since it's his project that he started at Universal) and wanting to continue the partnership. It's smart: Let Del Toro do his thing at a smaller scale and it won't be too much of a risk for Legendary budget wise. And if Pac-Rim becomes a huge hit, another incentive. It's all win-win.

Mountains needs to be made. The script I read was a mash of The Thing and Prometheus (there are some similar concepts, but not enough to say it's a ripoff. And FFS, Lovecraft wrote AtMoM 76 years ago) and it was amazing.

It will be made, that's for sure. I really think GDT's relationship with Universal is all but dead at this point.

i agree.

Pacific Rim now needs to make money even if it is a bad movie......... del Toro is the only hope we have.........dum dum dumdum :woot:

Looks like you guys were correct:

Don’t think for a moment that del Toro has given up his dreams for At The Mountains Of Madness, based on the HP Lovecraft horror classic that Universal unplugged late in the process even though del Toro had Tom Cruise poised to star and James Cameron poised to supervise 3D as producer. Del Toro hopes that Legendary will be part of that effort.

“They love it, but we just finished Pacific Rim,” he said. “They want to let that film happen [it opens July 12] and then my hope is, down the line we can do it. People ask how do i choose projects. All the projects in my roster are there because I love them, but the financing process is serendipity. And often, the ones I think will happen don’t, and the ones I think won’t happen, do.”

I will now see Pacific Rim ten times in theaters, regardless of the film's quality.

Fingers crossed. I hope Pacific Rim makes bazillions.

What's Crimson Peak about? And where can I find the AtMoM script?

WB would do it. Hell, even Summit/Lionsgate would do it, but they'd have to break the bank to get him what he needed budget wise.

I really hope this gets made! At The Mountains Of Madness is one of my favorite stories.

More like a mash of The Thing and Lovecraft. Or a 1930's version of John Carpenter's The Thing.

Well, I didn't mention Lovecraft because... it's based on a Lovecraft book, that goes without saying. :oldrazz:

Yeah, that was an odd analogy. ATMOM, for me was a pulp adventure story that switched genres to horror midway through.

I always found it funny that Universal greenlighted that rubbish Wolfman flick but won't greenlight this movie which sounds way better

Man, somebody needa hook a brother up with that script in a pm

Guillermo is going to have another pop pitching the movie to studios so hopefully one of them picks ATMOM up.

in an interview with The Playlist, the Hellboy director discusses the movie, and reveals that he's going to try to make it "one more time". "I'm going to try it one more time. Once more into the dark abyss. We're gonna do a big presentation of the project again at the start of the year and see if any [studio's] interested."

Del Toro also confirms that action star Tom Cruise is still attached to star in the adaptation. "Yeah, Tom is still attached. I think it would be so fantastic to make it with him. He's been such a great ally of the project." Finally, he says that he has finally seen Prometheus, and is now no longer worried about any similarities between it and At The Mountains Of Madness. "Not really, I saw it finally and.. yes, there are things in common, but, you know, screw it. Lovecraft was there first."

If Del Toro can't get one of the major studios to finance this then perhaps to he could get the likes of Lionsgate who make alot of Horror films or smaller new studios like the reformed Hammer Film Company or Virgin Movies to co-finance and produce the film.

Considering the amount of terrbile movies that get greenlighted I can't believe none of these studios want to make this movie.

I do like that he's so intent on Cruise being the lead. He probably wrote the screenplay with him in mind. Dedication for your ass.

even if the movie got greenlight before Pacific Rim is out if PR bombs then things will change.

first PR needs to be realesed and make a small profit and then lets hope for the best.

You know, I've never really liked Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness". In my opinion it was one of the weaker stories he wrote, and I found it to be long and boring. Sure there are some good things in it. But I never felt the tension and horror from it that I got from some of his other works. Again, just my opinion.

I agree with you.

One, just as all the horror is about to start, the narrator mentions everyone who survived getting back to the boat. That's like Alien going from the chestburster scene and cutting to the inquisition scene in Aliens.

Second, the info dump on the old ones really took me out of the story.

Come on, Legendary. Give GDT his baby.
