Atheism: Love it or Leave it? - Part 3

Most religions teach their followers to hate non believers and those who have other beliefs. If not to outright kill them (Deuteronomy has a few suggestions of how to kill them). You can hardly be surprised when they behave in an uncivilized manner towards non believers, or those who have different beliefs.

Yeah, the coffee shop I go to...is Christian. Plays Christian music...people own it go to Church, people work there, from what I know are Christians. Got invited by a girl who works there..she is friends with my niece, who was next to me, "maybe he can go to Church" I just stood there...ya know I love that place...nice place..nice size...just don't want to be in Church for obvious reasons.

I do find it ironic its located between 4 churches...a very nice looking Mormon Church, A New Creation Church, A Baptist Church, then some other one. First three are literally...within a mile of our house. All three on left of road going Towards gas station.

Also, I'm stupid. I always thought the Mormon Church was a Catholic Church. Yes...I'm serious. Last year I finally put 2+2 together.

Well I mean that's the thing, there's a fair amount of religious diversity here on campus, especially considering its technically a catholic school. People are pretty chill with people of other religions I guess they just have a problem with those of no religion.

That is curious. They only targeted the one with no faith. Maybe some really pissed off universalist? Or they just didn't have time to deface the other two.

Why would a universalist tear them down? They are very open to secular minded folks.

So a few weeks ago I posted to tell you guys that as the un-official Resident Atheist Man for SLU's Interfaith Alliance, I was asked to pose our poster campaign with a caption that said "I'm an atheist, and I support interfaith work."

My posters were put up along side 2 other featuring a Muslim and a Hindu in several locations all over campus. Within 2 days all the posters with my face and caption were torn down, despite being stamped with approval from the relevant University offices. The other 2 posters are still up at all of these locations.

I understand and respect that SLU is a Jesuit institution (unless they want city tax credits to build a new stadium but that's another matter), but there are many non-Christian students and the poster was specifically for a chartered and university recognized interfaith group. I don't know who tore it down, if it was someone from the university, or my fellow classmates, but either way it's a d*** move.

Unless of course people just wanted to take my pretty face home with them.

For religious folks, I think there’s a lot of ambivalence/confusion/hypocrisy when it comes to other religions. But it’s PC nowadays to “respect” other faiths. The common idea is that, fundamentally, everyone is “on the same team.” Or: “we worship the same thing, just in different ways.” And that leaves atheism as the out-group.

I had an online debate where I denied the divinity of Jesus. The loyal opposition, of course, aggressively disagreed. At the same time, this same Christian did not hesitate to claim common cause with pious Jews (“some of my best friends…”). But when you think about it, a Jew is a firm “atheist” with respect to Jesus. But that somehow got whitewashed in favor of a presumed alliance - believing in the “same” god.

Again, the self-identified atheist is cast as the "other."

Perhaps you’re aware that a number of high-profile atheist billboards have been vandalized. Often, this has turned out to be a PR boon. The message gets much more publicity and the hypocrisy of religious “morality” gets exposed. My advice would be to document all vandalism, keep a record. Maybe suggest to the school (or town) newspaper that there’s a story there. :cwink:

^^ An ideology that’s 100% based on the supernatural can’t afford to be ridiculing “magic.” :cwink:

I laughed when someone posted that Atheist pic on Facebook. Not only does it completely make up beliefs for atheists, but it's a lot better than making claims of some invisible guy in the sky controlling things.

Ha ha, first, we have to define "nothing", as weird as that sounds.

Yeeeeaaaaaaaaaaah, that pic is full of inaccurate strawmen.

But I keep encountering that stuff constantly. It's unfortunate that people think atheism means "believing nothing came from nothing".

And I can't help but think that this is projection on the part of theists.

Even if atheists did believe that (and they don't), what are most religions running on? God created the universe via magic. Okay, but where did God come from?

Maybe God came from the Goddess Gaia? Greek Mother Goddess, all gods come from her. She also Pagan Goddess.

Presumably Gaia can't exist if Earth hasn't been "made" yet.

To be fair, Pagan Gods outdate Christian God....and Jesus technically could be considered Pagan, but like Greek Gods getting mortal women pregnant, God got Virgin Mary Pregnant.

Of course Virgin Mary could have lied...

A comedian once said something along the lines of "the whole base Christianity is built on is a woman who really stuck to her story..."

Well paganism is defined simply as religions not Christian. Though it's generally only applied to pre-Chirstian European religions.

David Hume had a rather... blasphemous quote "Which is more likely: that the whole natural order is suspended, or that a jewish minx should tell a lie?"

Course, that assumes you believe Jesus existed, despite the evidence to the contrary.

I believe a Jesus Christ existed...rather he was the son of God or a prophet or a wise man...
