Avatar: The Legend Of Korra

Well, I'm more concerned about how names work in the Avatar universe.

For example, Water Tribe people don't seem to have family or "last" names, similar to Fire Nation folk, but neither do most of the Earth Kingdom guys. But there are a few noted exceptions like the Bei Fongs and now the Satos.

Like...how does it work??

I thought its there but just hasn't been revealed.

Well in real life surnames were relatively rare until recently. Only important people were afforded last names. Some cultures still don't have last names.

Most last names have a practical purpose, denoting occupation, or place of origin. Almost all Japanese surnames only date back about two centuries. Random trivia. Though in China surnames have existed for a while, but they were very generic, hence why so many Chinese people have the same last name. This has become problematic now, with so many people have such similar names.

It's because those names have been romanized. When written in actual characters, there are differences in the strokes indicating the tone (higher or lower, deeper or shallow). Its pretty damn interesting but its also heavily memory based.

If you read most manga, if two Japanese characters introduce each other, they sometimes make it a point to describe the characters used to spell their names in writing. Its actually quite interesting.

As for names in Avatar, I remember the episode where the Gaang try to sneak into the Earth Palace, they originally try to pass off as party guests to a gala. Aang refers to Sokka and Katara as "Sokka Water Tribe, Katara Water Tribe".

This show probably has to move a little faster by design. It's only 2 seasons as opposed to 3 for the first series. Also the first series had to establish the world.

Yeah, I know about there being less seasons, and shorter ones at that, but that doesn't change the fact that they are still doing a great job at it. I'm just hoping the second season doesn't feel tacked on, since it wasn't part of the original plan.

I think the second season will have a new villain, so it should be fine.

Having a new villain is what worries me actually. Amon is being built up to be an awesome villain and it seems strange that he's just going to disappear after the first season. But I don't know what they have in mind for the series as a whole, so I can't really say whether it will work or not.

What would the alternative be? The villain has to be a new person, since most of the old characters (and presumably all the antagonists, with the sole of exception of Azula) are dead.

Actually, showing what happened to Azula would be interesting. But yeah, they had to come up with new villains.

Yeah, plus, this first season is only going to be 12 episodes. Amon is being built up well, but I fear it's going to be rushed to much on the back half. Hopefully, they will pull off an effective ending. I think it will be fine, but still the potential for it not going totally right is there.

Didn't they come out and said this season would be 20-something episodes after all?
I could be mistaken though.

I've only heard 12 episodes for season 1 and 14 for season 2.

I suppose with how awesome the show is it could change and they could extend it (hope that is the case.) But I haven't seen anything officially stating they have extended the season(s)

I guess I was mistaken from reading a post on the previous page. Anyhow, we can always hope that they do more episodes, seeing as they are so short compared to regular tv shows.

I'm sure it will all work out, but I can't help but feel nervous for the time being.

I'm assuming he meant a new villain other than Amon for the 2nd season, not reaching back to the old series for villains.

I'm sorry. I'm kind of hoping she falls for Bolyn. Mako is a stiff.

Great episode. NOT THE YELLOW FAN!!!

I felt so bad for Bolin. :(

Friggin love triangles. Did everyone notice Asami's guilt face when Korra thanked her?

I think she's definitely up to something. Maybe not fully willingly but something fishy is up.

That was ****ed up, I honestly felt bad for Bolin.

I felt bad for Bolin, too. That was tough to watch. Hopefully he finds someone.

I don't ship, but if I had to I would choose Borra. Personally I'd rather have Korra become like a sister to the fabulous bending brothers.
