Nickelodeon Greenlights The Legend of Korra
Source: Nickelodeon
July 21, 2010

Nickelodeon announced this morning that it has given the green light to "The Legend of Korra," from "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko:

"Mike and Bryan have imagined a compelling new story inspired by the Airbender mythology that they so brilliantly crafted when the TV series began," Johnson said. "This new avatar is not only a girl, but also hot-headed, independent and ready to take on the world."

The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern "Avatar" world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang's son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

This is great news! I really wish we knew what happened with Zuko and his mom in the end though.

Interesting that Aang apparently didn't live to be too incredibly old (I guess he died in his 70s if this new Avatar is already a teenager).

Anyway, this will help leave behind the bad taste of Shayamalan's failed movie.

Let the speculation on who got together with who begin! (I think it's fairly obvious who Tenzin's mother is.)

It looks interesting, I hope that the same level of quality is present here, in both the storytelling and the characters.

AWESOME...I'm so excited!!!! :)

I wonder if we'll see cameos? Maybe Toph is a grand master now.

Awesome, Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the rare cartoon that is great and boy am I glad that they are returning back with a new installment to the mythology. I have confidence that this will be as good as the first one.

I wonder how Aang rebuilt the Air Nomads any way ?

The anti-bending movement sounds pretty interesting though. Maybe they'll have steampunk sentinels to hunt down benders or something.:woot:

Looking interesting. I hope if a film adaptation is ever greenlighted for the Legend of Korra, M. Nights will be barred from directing it.

Interesting that it's starting off with her already knowing most of the abilities.

Sooo...I wonder how Aang dies? :( Hopefully it was a peaceful death and he didn't get screwed over by someone.

If this did get greenlit as a film I hope that they'd actually use Japanese , Chinese and Eskimo actors to play Earth Kingdom , Fire Nation , Air Nomad , and Water Tribe characters this time around.

Maybe he saves Zuko's life during an assassination attempt on his life by rogue Fire Nation military officers and generals. Or maybe the Dai Li come back and try to assassinate Zuko.

I would be okay with that, better then betrayal.

I will definitely be checking this out! I only hope its as good as the first series!

Yeah I really hope they explain a lot of what happened with all the characters from the original series.

Which I think they will as the first season progresses.

I'm expecting cameos and references. Particularly to Sokka being a key part of Team Aang as an example of how benders and non-benders can co-exist.

This is much better news than Wonder Woman's new costume. :woot:

I still have to pick up/watch the original series

got some catching up to do

So we will never know what happen with Zuko's mother since we found out that she is still alive. Also will the true balance of the world return with new airbenders? To me when airbenders got wipe out, the balance of world and the nations become truly unbalanced.

Wonderwoman´s costume was for me a bad news, her new is not as good as her old costume.

I'm sure we'll also find out what came of the search for Zuko's mother. Firelord Zuko is nothing if not obsessive.

Interview with the creators of the new spin-off and what fans could expect. They also bring up the movie and they thought of it haha
the best part is
Would you like to bring a cartoon version of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” to the big screen?
Konietzko: We would love to. I think Mike and I would absolutely love to do feature animation. Either another story, or it if worked out, one in the “Avatar” world. We would be really excited.
