Sci-Fi Avatar: The Way Of Water

Just rewatched the extended edition of Avatar for the first time in years and I forgot how much better this cut was especially since I watched the theatrical cut in theaters recently.

It's the only version worth watching. :D

80% on RT with 7.20 out of 10. 220 reviews in.

Was about to post it myself. Expected higher, considering the hype. Which I have none. I saw the first one once on tv and that was enough for me. I hate 3D and have no interest in watching this at a theater, especially in 3D. I need to save money anyway so Ant-Man 3 is probably the next theater movie for me.

Just got out. So, I'll make it clear that when I saw the first film in the cinema I didn't like it. I rewatched it 12 years later and enjoyed it a lot more. I'm a huge James Cameron fan despite, so going into this I was excited about that alone. Overall, id say it's better than the first film. Not among Cameron's best, but yes it's visually breathtaking, and the last hour is fantastic in both action and emotion. I ended up tearing up a little even. Actually, I'd go as far to say there were bits of the final hour that gave me T2 vibes with a little bit of The abyss thrown in there. Easily one of, if not my favorite action sequence of the year.

The 3D was fine but honestly, I don't really need it. And for some reason my theater hasn't been fitting their movies to the premium large format Dolby screen they have, so there's black bars on both the right and left of the screen which I found distracting. That aside, it was a solid experience. I give it a solid 8/10 overall.

Well, that was a lot of fun and James Cameron hasn't lost a step when it comes to crafting action sequences because the set pieces in this are just as thrilling/exciting as the first movie IMO.

I really do love the worldbuilding and I honestly wish we got to explore Pandora even more, but I guess they are saving a lot of stuff for the future sequels as well at least that's what I'm hoping.

The new additions were great in particular Spider, Kiri, Tuk and Lo'ak and I have to give a special shout out to Stephen Lang who is still as badass as ever as Quaritch despite it being 13 years since the last movie.

I thought his connection with
Spider was really interesting, and I love the fact that he lived at the end and is pretty much the Thanos/Darth Vader of this Universe lol and that we will definitely see more of him in the sequels.

Hadn't watched the first one since it came so I ended up watching it a few days ago. I think I might prefer it to the second one because at least it was new. Felt like the majority of the film was a rehash of the first movie and the last part was just a set-up for the third. Quatrich made for a better villain this time because they gave him some depth. Visually stunning.

Question

Where did the sea people go during the final fight? Everyone was altogether fighting and then suddenly they were no where to be found. The Chief's daughter was still on the boat at that time and nobody but Sully's family was around. The whole point of them joining up for the fight was to save their kids but they just went MIA. This has bothered me so much since leaving the theater.

Leaving the house at 5.30am in the freezing cold to see this before a busy workday. Better be worth it haha.

My ranking:

Terminator 2: Judgement Day
The Terminator
Avatar: The Way of Water
Titanic
The Abyss
Avatar
Aliens
True Lies
Piranha II: The Spawning

Yea I was hoping after 13 years we would jave a rock solid story to go with the improved CGI. The story was my main complaint about the first one, take away the cgi and 3d gimmick and what do you have left?
is like taking away Freddie Mercury voice from all of Queens tracks and what do you have left?
Everything matters, the CGI, the story, the music, the actors, every detail
Maybe in a movies like godfather you still can take away cgi and still left with something great, but when you build CGI art from start to the end, is like taking away over half of the essence of this movie, like i said is like taking away true great musicians voice from their songs

Anybody else feel like the entire final hour of this film was better than most of the first?

Movie critic on my morning radio show pretty much said this film repeats the same major story beats as the first film and doesn't even recommends watching the original Avatar to watch this one.

Honestly, you could just see this film on its own. The ending of the first is the main important thing.

Just got out. Liked this a LOT better than the first one, which I only saw once when it came out and didn't care for.

The family focus made a big difference for me. Jake by himself isn't a particularly interesting protagonist, but make him the head of a good ensemble, and it played. Bonus points that Worthington seems performance seems to be better here... could be because he's blue the whole time. Thought they were all really well done and engaging. The effects are second to none. The water world/tribe was much more interesting than the forest of the first movie. The baddie was much more effective this time.

Meanders a bit, particularly in the second act and for some reason toward the end. Doesn't necessarily feel like a second movie... more like "The Beginning: Part 2", if that makes sense. I think it may be as a consequence of mapping everything out this time (the first movie being the intro and this one being the true beginning of the overall story) but who knows.

How are the effects? I assume at least on par with the first?
