Sci-Fi Avatar: The Way Of Water

Is it weird that I have absolutely no desire or urge to watch this film? I haven't felt the "phenomenon" aspect of it besides how much money it made. I just don't get it... I feel like I live in a parallel reality when it comes to Avatar.

Not everyone has to like everything, lol. I have no interest in rom-coms, myself. :p

I know, I know. But is James Cameron... Is a big sci fi epic... I'm supposed to like it. But I don't even have the urge to even see it.

I think I know what it is, I think with both Avatar films, people like us feel the disconnect because Avatar IS a phenomenon...its just not a phenomenon within the online/social media/film twitter world we're plugged into. I think its a phenomenon amongst the kid and family demographic and thats the demo that essentially catapulted both movie's box office to such heights. Families are eating this movie up and they're not going online to rave about it. But amongst our circles, the circles obsessed with Marvel, DC, Star Wars and generally older skewing IPs....we just dont hear about Avatar. And I think there are certain films that come around every now and then that make BOAT loads of money and have little to no online chatter about them.

Case in point, Lion King 2019. Film twitter would have you believe everyone hated that movie but guess what, it made close to 1.7 billion dollars, so....there was undoubtedly lots of people who enjoyed the Heck out of that movie, but not us lol

I don't think The Lion King (2019) doing so well in the box office is a testament to how much the audience loved it, but rather how much loved the original was that drove the world to see it in masses. That's not to say that it is universally hated like some make it out to be, but it is more of a pre-established franchise hype and nostalgia that drew so many people in. It's usually the next movie of a franchise that reflects on how popular the previous one was.

Kinda feel the same. The first Avatar is just a *very* derivative story. Not bad, not all that good either. I’m curious enough about Way of Water to give it a try but I’ll wait until it hits Disney +

I just watched it the other day. I really enjoyed it. Thought it was much better than the first movie. The story was more unique and of course the visuals were fantastic. I don’t think the characters will be household names in the same way Cameron’s other movies are, but I did enjoy the new ones, especially Spider. I have a feeling this franchise will be one where each movie gets progressively better than the previous one. Looking forward to the next few movies. That being said, I probably won’t watch this again until maybe right before the third one comes out, just to refresh my memory.

I have seen the first film.

But I haven't seen the second movie, as I currently don't have the urge to watch another 3 hour Avatar film.

Maybe something needs to bigger or outgross Marvel Studios (worldwide) and thats the purpose of Avatar.

Here are my main critiques:

* No one in the Sully family gives a **** about Spider until he shows up again. No one cares that he's being held captive.
* Neytiri threatens to kill Spider, and no one calls her out on that. Neytiri was in a vulnerable situation at that point yes, and she was dealing with a lot, but like...how is Spider supposed to feel about all of that?
* I don't think the movie properly built up Neytiri and Spider's relationship and that she doesn't view Spider as one of the family. She clearly has no paternal instincts for him to threaten him in that way.
* The 48FPS looks too inconsistent. The technology is a gimmick and doesn't look good. It makes certain scenes look choppy and bad. Other scenes look too smooth and artificial.
* General Ardmore disappears midway through the movie.
* Also once they leave to go to the reef, they kind of ignore the fact that they are in a winner takes all war. Not sure why they think they can just disappear to the island region and never worry about the RDA again. The RDA is there to stay. They literally want to colonize all of Pandora. What about the sanctuary area? That's what they were targeting after destroying home tree in the first movie.
* I get that they have multiple movies, but to spend three hours for Jake just to realize "Hey, we have to fight for our home," felt kind of redundant. Like the first five minutes of the movie we see the RDA returning to Pandora and causing massive destruction. I get that Jake just wants to protect his family, but schlepping off to the island regions is not a solution for that. Jake is an idiot.
* Literally no mentions of unobtainium ever again, lol. I guess they solved the unobtainium problem on Earth. It's all about the Amrita brain juice now.
* Once again, I get the wider implications are probably being saved from other movies, but I mean...the obvious answer here is that Earth and humanity are screwed. In order for Pandora and the Na'vi to survive, it basically means they have to wipe out humanity. And what I mean by that is it doesn't look like we are at a point where peace can be brokered and humanity can live in harmony with the Na'vi and Pandora.
* Unless we get to a point where the combined forces of Pandora can figure out a way to beat humanity into submission before killing them all that they would have to submit to all their laws and rules.
* In other words there's no simple, peaceful resolution here. It's a pretty dire situation. Humanity has condemned its planet to a grimy death. They can't be allowed to do the same thing to Pandora.

While I liked the movie, I agree 100% will all of these critiques. The way the family treated Spider baffles me. I think the main reason Neytiri treats Spider like that is because he’s the son of Lang’s character rather than just being human. Still, it’s a pretty weak excuse for her to treat him like that since he’s an innocent kid. I hope they accept him more as we get into next few sequels. He was definitely my favorite character of the movie.

Watched both back to back last night and tonight… for the first time, on both.

Avatar, even extended, still has some plot issues. But, damn it’s fun and pretty. Also, Worthington deserves more credit, he rules in this... 8/10.

The Way Of Water ruled. I liked jumping into this larger part of the Pandora world more, this might be the first time when someone devotes to water - it actually works and is amazing.

…Sully family was rad. PAYAKAN IS MY NEW BEST FRIEND. Even geared up, gosh that last hour is crazy and beautiful. And, I want to scold Spider for that ‘save’ of Avatar-Quaritch… 9/10.

With the way the last one ended, I think Avatar Quaritch is gonna have a face turn in the 3rd movie.

Damn you, Cameron, give me a release date for The Abyss and True Lies in 4K!:argh:

I wonder if this is the new norm for billion dollar hits since Top Gun Maverick had a similar theatrical to Blu-ray window. Sure, a 6 month wait time was the norm 10-15 years ago but they stand out these days when most movies are on home video in three months or less after they're released in theaters.

Except they were on streaming early. They are just punishing enthusiasts.

I finally watched this and I'm glad I skipped it in theaters last year. It didn't need to be 3 hours long. A 3 hour cut should be like for the super fans. It took me 2 days to finish because I had a hard time paying attention. Bland characters. Uninteresting villain. I don't like the family angle they gave to Zoe/Sam. There is just something so generic/vanilla about this. It feels like if an AI created a sci fi film, it would come out like this without any flavor, if there's a flavor its water. And the guy from Scream VI, cannot act.
