Sci-Fi Avatar: The Way Of Water

You need a better comparison though. The rule - never compare another franchise to Star Wars. It's in its own league, and that's not (completely) hyperbolic statement. It's an anomaly of a franchise that came out of nowhere, and from nothing.

Star Wars is beyond pop culture. it's an asteroid that crashed onto earth, and has infected our cultural lexicon and we are still feeling the effects since 1977. That's a poor comparison. Star Wars is both nerd and not nerd because it's just too huge to ignore. I know people who are as young as my little cousins, to old folks in whom I've worked with (in their 60') who knows SW.

I totally agree. Avatar was a big deal for a short period and was pretty much quick movie trend, that seemed to shine for a little while and then die off. The film in no way can be compared to something like Star Wars or even the big comic book movies.

True. The main reason why it was so successful was because it revolutionized 3D. To its credit, Avatar is still probably the best use of 3D I've seen for a film. Aside from a few films that utilized 3D in a unique way (Gravity, The Jungle Book and Doctor Strange come to mind), it doesn't seem to be a big draw for audiences anymore. The only reason I see 3D movies anymore are if I have no choice because I want to see a particular movie in IMAX, like The Force Awakens.

eek still has a point, it's doesn't mean much that it is not talked about in your circle of friends.
The people around me doesn't really care about Marvel movies, some didn't knew that a StarWars spinoff will be released in December, they just go see them when they heard of it or when geeks like me talk about it.

While nobody (including me) is craving for a sequel to Avatar (which still is a pretty entertaining flick, though), it must be said that James Cameron's sequels have never been lazy.
Just look at what he did Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Of course the originals were better than Avatar, but I am mildly curious to see what Cameron does with a sequel. And I can't help it, I'll be in line for any movie he directs (and for Alita: Battle Angel, which he wrote and is producing), anyway, so...

Well to be fair, I'm referring to really a lot of people outside of my "circle of friends" considering the majority of guests we have on our show and talk to, aren't personal friends though they are typically hardcore film buffs. Either way my point still stands, I don't see a line of fans lining up drooling over Avatar 2. I also don't believe it'll have anywhere near the financial success of the first film, the novelty has already worn off.

To its credit, I also agree that to this day its still the best use of 3D I've ever seen used in a film, and I am an avid detractor of the 3D medium.

I see where everyone's coming from, but I think the marketing push for this will be huge, it'll have a nostalgia/next big thing affect, and third, well... People were skeptical about the first movie, and Titanic. Look how those went.

Avatar sequels begin motion capture in August

Ever since the first Avatar film took the world by storm in 2009, the sequel talk has been in full swing, but now it seems the actors will finally get involved for the multiple pictures that have already been announced. Speaking with The Daily Beast, director James Cameron confirmed the Avatar sequels scripts are in place and the actors will be assembling later this year to begin the motion-capture part of production.

“The thing is, my focus isn’t on Avatar 2. My focus is on Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 equally. That’s exactly how I’m approaching it. They’ve all been developed equally. I’ve just finished the script to Avatar 5. I’m now starting the process of active prep. I’ll be working with the actors in the capture volume in August, so I’m booked in production every day between now and then. Our volume is up and running, and everything is designed, and so we’re going full-guns right now. I feel like I’ve been let out of jail, because I’ve been in the writing cave for the last two years. I’m actually enjoying life. I don’t enjoy writing. I wouldn’t wish writing on a dog.”
Last year, 20th Century Fox revealed that the first of the Avatar sequels is expected to hit theaters in December 2018 and would be followed by three more films in December 2020, December 2022, and December 2023. Confirmed to feature the return of cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver, the Avatar sequels will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment. The sequels are written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno, which Cameron will direct.

Four ****ing sequels. Even if they're decent, Cameron could be spending all that time on original properties...

About time!

The mind blowing Avatar world in Disneyland will open this year so that will reinvigorate the mythology a bit.

I won't believe this film is happening until I see a trailer. :funny:

I do think 4 sequels is overkill a bit but I love Cameron's movies so will be going to see all of them.

Just don't think they will be as successful as the first, but again people thought the first would flop.

Cameron's trying to create his own Star Wars/LotR level sci-fi fantasy franchise apparently. One thing I've learned is that whenever I doubt him he blows my expectations out of the water. Even when taking the criticisms into account, he's yet to make a bad film since his first one (Piranha 2).

I do wish that he'd directed Battle Angel before doing more Avatar...but it seems like he's committed to telling his Magnum Opus before his end. And honestly, despite the hate I still enjoy watching Avatar from time to time. Sure it's derivative but so is Star Wars. My dream Cameron directed movie would have been Metal Gear though. If ever there was an already existing franchise that would've been perfect for him (besides Alien), it would've been Metal Gear.

Doesn't mean much. Outside sites like this one I never meet anyone who cares about Star Wars. Didn't stop Force Awakens from making huge money, did it? :)

Now you're just being silly. Say a name like Darth Vader or Yoda and most people will know who you're talking about even if they've never seen a Star Wars movie.

Say Jake Sully or Quaritch? Blank stares.

Some of his best movies are sequels, one of which in a series he didn't even originate.

While derivative, Avatar is his own thing. It's not like he's making Iron Man 5-10 or something.

He didnt direct Piranha 2 tho, he only shot two scenes and shot them on the site, then had nothing to do with editing them etc (one was morgue scene the other one escaped my mind)

Anyway, as far as the comparison to Star Wars, SW is a mythology that made name for scifi, and has been around for many generations, its unfair to compare one recent movie, however successfull, to a mythology thats everywhere since the 70s with 8 films, animated series' and many books and graphic novels.

Anyway, we'll see what happens, for me its hard to predict. I was sure that Avatar will be a big hit, but around SpiderMan's numbers, so my preditions arent really fortune teller's skills

Those big comic book movies still get distributed on thousands of 3d screens. Pretty much none of them have had the influence that Avatar has had.

What's the last original property anyone here is really a fan of from Cameron?

Titanic? True Lies? Probably have to go back 25 years to T2 really.

The fact is it's been a while since Cameron's been a fan-boy fave and he seems more than ok with that. He does what he wants to do and what he wants to do is Avatar to the nth degree.

I think for a lot of people who are angry for whatever reason at Cameron for sticking with Avatar. They seem to see him as the guy from the period from T1 through T2 only and disregard that he's 20+ years removed from that era.
