Regarding the possible non-Venom, if this was anyone but Nolan, you do know the vitriol this decision would get.

Ummm...remember non-permawhite? I don't think they care who it is. They're still going to freak out big time. :hehe:

If Bane "breaks Batman's will" then this is gonna be pretty insane. The one consistent thing Bruce had in BB and TDK is the will to keep pushing forward even after the Joker's machinations. If Bane crushes Batman's will, this is gonna be one crazy film.

The combination of plot elements from Batman Venom and Knightfall would be the most logical way to use Bane. Drug addict Batman would be awesome, just imagine the buzz behind it.

Why? In the vast majority of his comics appearance, he doesn't use venom. It's not so much on par with condemning Nolan for not making The Joker permawhite as it is condemning him for not using laughing fish in the story.

Here's a question: How do you even do Bane's origin?

Till now, the only Nolan villain with an "origin" was Two-Face, and that was only shown because his story is so closely tied with the story of Batman and Gotham at large.

It's safe to say, given what he's already done, that Nolan's not going to take a detour in Bruce's story to show Bane's extensive origin story.

How do you show/tell without it being really clunky and/or feeling really separated from Bruce's story?

If anything, I do hope the one thing they manage to keep from the character is the mask. One of my biggest concerns was how they could top the fantastic imagery Joker's facepaint gave as the face of evil. It's very hard to come up with a villain with similarly striking menace. Two-Face would have been a great follow-up, but we knew how that ended up. The rumors circulating around featuring Black Mask and Hugo didn't give me much hope.

But Bane... fella has a f--king awesome mask.

It varies from story to story, but a total lack of him even juicing it once in the flick, even as a nod, wouldn't fly with some.

Yeah, they have to keep the mask! It's one of Bane's defining features. And the thing is, they can actually maintain a balance between giving Tom Hardy face-time in the movie and still keeping the mask element, as even in the comics Bane spends about 50% of his time without his mask.

yep, pretty much sums up my previous comment. I agree

Yeah, I remember discussing this a while back. It's difficult to tell the whole story of a child being raised in a prison without a bunch of flashbacks. If Bruce and Bane's origins were told side by side, that would be fantastic--but obviously we can't do that after Batman Begins.

I'm intrigued by the idea of Bane breaking out of prison in the opening sequence. That, combined with allusion to his history--rather than showing it outright--would give the audience an idea of this character's unique life, while maintaining an air of mystique and make him seem a little mythic.

Bane gets justice at last. I can't wait for Nolan's/Hardy's Bane!

Well I think one thing is for certain, Nolan (like me :woot:) seems to be more partial to the more frightening villains of Batman's rogues gallery.

Scarecrow, Two-Face & the Joker were all visually arresting characters, I would like to assume that however Nolan redefines Bane, he will be quite intimidating

Opening scene could have him breaking out of prison, to introduce the character. The rest of the origin can either come Bane's dialogue or Batman investigating. Bane has an extensive backstory, but not one you have to see.

Absolutely. I think Bane's look lends itself to easy adaptation into a sort of soldier or mercenary look; put him gear on him and keep the mask as his one eccentricity.

That's also a good point; learning about Bane gives us the opportunity to see Batman's detective prowess in action.

This makes sense. It also starts the film off with the same level of excitement as TDK, and pretty much accomplishes the same goal. Establishing just how difficult this new character will be for Batman, without spending too much time on them like the previous series.

Good thoughts, guys.

Maybe the viral marketing could fill in some blanks (obviously nothing essential; I hate when the viral stuff becomes required for understanding the film).

it doesnt require extensive coverage, nor does it require a break from the meat of the movie to deviate into it. but origin or no origin, they should at least do little to contradict his known origin from the comics. secondly, any info given on his origin could be alluded to throughout the movie when depicting the characters motivation. lastly, he has a prison file that would have record of his life in prison, which could be referenced by batman, gordon, and others.

Heh, all I can be reminded of at the moment is Mickey Rourke's absolutely wasted method training in preparation for his thankless role in Iron Man 2.

This is the part that likely deserves that type of dedication and will pay itself off through the script.

Christian Bale is noticeably much shorter than Aaron Eckhardt or Gary Oldman. Nolan didn't even try to hide that. I hope he didn't try, anyway. But no one seems to care about that.

I always found it strange that most of the supporting characters were really tall. Caine & Freeman are both around 6'2. Neeson is almost 6'4, and Heath was a good 6'1. Katie/Maggie were both tall for women as well, and Anne Hathaway isn't short either. It's just weird that one of the biggest villains Batman's ever faced will be perhaps shorter than him in this movie.

I think the viral should continue with the faux news stories/talk show and keep us up to date on what has been happening in Gotham between movies.
