Bat-Mite?

I have no idea what Morrison is doing with Bat-Mite. Is he a halluciniation
? Did Bruce "create" him for when the **** hits the fan? Is Bruce insane? How long has he been with Batman, Bruce didn't seem surprised when he talked to him. And what the heck is going on with his back?
I just read 674 and things are starting to come together from when Morrison started but this Bat-Mite stuff is confusing me to no end.

The issue with Bat-Mite is as Bruce say's "I agreed to spend 10 days cut off from all external stimuli until my brain's central executive began to generate its own terrifying content to fill the void." Thus it is made up.
