Batman and......... Doc Savage???

Self-righteous.
Just one of the many benefits of being in the position of actually knowing what I'm talking about, instead of having to rely solely on fanboyism to get me through a conversation about a subject I'm a "fan" of.

Don't be jealous; this position is open to anyone willing. :oldrazz:

See, this is how you learn to roll with it. Clearly some people have a hard time with perception. Thank you IDDP!

I'm on everyone's side, here. Well... at least I think I am...

Truthfully, I sound stuffy because I suppose I am. I'm not even that much of a Doc Savage fan, but I do really respect the history of the character and his influence on things. I'm actually looking forward to this series because I'm a Spirit fan. I'm anxious to see how a 'serious' take on Batman/The Spirit goes. I like the Darwin Cooke one shot, but I want to see a less cartoon-ish approach to how the two guys would rub off each other.

[Cowleen, I hand-crafted that last line for you. Have at it.]

Give it a chance people. No matter what your thoughts are, someone out there is going to enjoy this.

[BLACKOUT]
I tried hard not too chuckle as I wrote that.
[/BLACKOUT]

Plenty of people seem to be genuinely excited for it. Myself included, being a fan of Batman's roots.

I still have no idea who Doc Savage is. But the :babyfacepalm: is brilliant.
Well.....first look at my avatar.

Doc Savage was created for the pulp magazines in 1933. He had 181 pulp novels wrote about him that ran frm '33 until 1949.

He was raised from birth to be a crime fighter by his adventurer father. He was tutured by the best people in as many fields as his father could get. He is a doctor of medicine as well as having a doctorate in many fields. He performs at least 2 hours of exercise a day and so is in spectacular physical shape and strength (he is referred to as a SUPERMAN because of his strength....and remember that Superman was not created until 1938).

Doc is a genius, he is well respected among the law enforcement community, he starts out extremely wealthy from the money he gets from many of his various inventions....but becomes a billionaire when he is given a massive store of gold from a lost Mayan tribe after he saves them from a man made plague.

He has 5 friends he takes on adventures with him (some times all 5 go, sometimes any combination of the 5)...he calls them his "brothers" because they fought in World War One together. Each is a master in his own personal field of expertise.

He tries to not purposefully take a bad guys life (preferring to put them in jail)....but his "brothers" are not always so inclined (particularily Monk).

Hope that helps.

Unfortuantly many of the younger comic fans don't know the history of Doc....and don't seem to get that these stories now being done by DC will be in one of thier "Other Dimensions"....in this one, there are no superpowered heroes like Superman, Green Lantern, etc.....but it is a world where the PULP type heroes exist. This has nothing to do with the continuity of any current or past book in the comics or the pulps. It is another dimension.

I personally don't understand what all the fuss is? I'm not really a huge Doc Savage fan or a pulp hero fan(as i've only read a few stories here and there. I prefer pulp horror, myself...), but i always thought these heroes were pretty damn cool. And being as how Batman's first story is a pretty obvious rip-off of a Shadow story, Batman and pulp go pretty hand in hand.

Azzarello has quickly become one of my favorite comic writers, after having read "Joker", 100 Bullets and the terribly underrated "Batman: Broken City". I love the way he writes Batman very much. He tells the kind of stories more writers should tell, especially with Batman.

This one-shot was very good, very fun. But it was very solid. The little sketchbook at the end with Morales's artwork was great to look at. Philip Noto's artwork was good, but i think maybe Morales should have drawn it instead. The First Wave series is gonna be a real treat.

I'm hoping your previous, fairly long post wasn't in regards to my last post.

Im looking forward to this. i dont anything about Doc Savage, but Azzarello is wonderful:up:

By no means. It was in response to a series of posts which have since been exorcised by our good Mods. As were a handful of the "give peace a chance" "we're all getting along, now" posts toward the end of the thread.

In the 90's I remember reading about an adaptation with Arnold Schwarzenegger but nothing came out of it.

I don't read Doc Savage comic books but I read the early 1939/1940 Batman stories and Batman comics books, in general.

Since this Team Up series will be very Pulp Fiction/Film-noir, I'm actually interested to check it out.

Well, I like Doc Savage. I like Batman. So it pretty cool that they're teaming up.

Spirit and Batman worked well, but then again, Spirit is a bit different then Savage. But it could still work quite well.

I'd rather see Batman team up with The Shadow, Phantom, or Green Hornet (I love that episode from the 60's show) but I doubt that'll happen anytime soon. Unless I'm missing something, and he did team up with one of those guys at one point.

But I'll pick up that issue for sure.

Oh ok. I couldn't tell since it was posted shortly after my post which involved me saying I liked Batman so I'll still check this out.

I just don't like being called or thought of as some poser, jump on the bandwagon comic reader when I've been reading/collecting since I was in grade school.

this will probably be a very well-written, interesting comic. very much looking forward to it.

however, it will annoy me that batman is "gun-toting". i see no reason for this being the case. And although it won't ruin the comic in it's own right, far from it, i sincerely doubt anyone would feel that such a move is particularly interesting as a concept in itself. it's just....why?

still, should be good.

There were a lot of posts made by people trying to turn this into a secret lounge, where they had absolutely no idea who Doc Savage was and couldn't have cared less about him...and when some people tried to explain him and his significance to the comic and superhero world....we got more of the same crap that got the Batousi Lounge closed (which just makes it that much longer before another one will be allowed....way to go guys, good job).

The "why" is just basicly that this is an "Another World" story. It doesn't take place in our diminsion or continuity.

Oh ok, I guess that happened before or after I made my first post in here. I never saw all of that.

Kind of ignorant for people to talk crap about a character they don't know just because he was created a long time ago.

Personally, I'm looking forward to this.

The book is pretty good. A decent start to a new series of adventures in another reality. Doc is the well known and respected adventurer and crime fighter. Batman has only been in operation for about a month, and Doc goes to Gotham to investigate him. This being an alternate reality, Batman uses twin .45s and Gotham is located in California.

Hahaha. How long has it been out??

I thought this was a fairly new thread but I guess not.

It came out this week...I bought it yesterday. I collect Doc Savage material.

I know you're a huge Doc Savage fan. I asked because I thought it came out a lot longer than just a week ago. I was thinking this thread was months old when you said you had already read it. I just made the mistake in thinking the book wasn't released yet.

Damn....plastic or porcelin?

Not plastic, cost me some $$$ :hehe:

I'll take a pic sometime this week when I can, not as cool as my bronze one with the snake but still a nice one. Was surprised when I saw how big the sucker was

I've seen some nice looking ones on the net....but I can't afford anything right now. Can't wait to see the pic of the one you got.
