Batman/Bruce Wayne Casting Thread - Part 1

He's no Robert De Niro or Al Pacino, but Neither is JG. Affleck has provided some solid acting here and there, BvS happens to be one of those in my opinion.

While this game of "your actor is worse than my actor" we've all got going on is tiresome, and I don't think Affleck is as bad as some here make him out to be, I do think he's quite a few rungs on the ladder beneath Jake.

I agree with you. The back and forth is weird. However, I'm puzzled by the absolute hatred for Affleck in here. JG is a good actor, but most seem to hold him on a pedestal in this forum. I guess i'm trying to balance the love for JG for some love for Affleck.

I have a bias towards chamaeleons so Ben is just at a disadvantage against someone like Jake.

Ben is at a disadvantage because he sucks as Batman. I’m not saying he’s a bad actor; he’s been good and even great in other roles. But he just doesn’t fit this character. He might look the part and he’s a big name, but whatever it takes to be a great Batman... he doesn’t have it. I don’t care how great that stupid warehouse scene is. He never had a handle on this character and if WB keeps using him, they actually run the risk of killing interest in the character.

For me "sucks as Batman"; is a bit of an exaggeration but you do you. Plus, Jake G has never played Batman so Ben sucking or not sucking as Batman is not that relevant iwhen trying to rate one above the other.

I wouldn't say he sucks, but all the " BEST BATMAN EVUR " hype is a little bit much. He's just.. Okay. Definitely passable, but just okay. I guess that's the main problem.

I believe Ben could've done a helluva job as Batman under different/better leadership and direction, but the damage is done. At this time, I see him as one of the sacrifices that needs to be made for Batman to be good again.

Basically, he's to Batman what Andrew Garfield is to Spider-Man.

That's actually a perfect analogy. And I liked Garfield as well, lol.

I thought he was great in BvS, even some of his stuff in the non reshot JL is good, but he's clearly checked out now.

I honestly think Garfield was much better as Spider-Man than Ben has been as Batman.

I mean, I think that's because Garfield is probably a better actor overall than Ben is. I think both of them got burned by some characterization problems and being in films of questionable quality, but you could tell they were both pretty dedicated to their role when they first got it.

I still remember when Garfield went to the SDCC 2011 panel dressed up in a cheap Spidey suit. Kinda breaks my heart that things went so poorly for him, but at the same time, I think it's worth it overall given how great Tom has been in the role so far.

Likewise I think the same will probably apply for Ben's successor. Especially if it ends up being Jake Gyllenhaal.

Jake is on his way to Pacino and DeNiro status. He'll be nominated this year for Stronger, and as far as I'm concerned, he should have won the Oscar for Nightcrawler yet he wasn't even nominated (biggest Oscar snub since Dark Knight).

Affleck is only serviceable or solid at best in roles like Gone Girl, the Town, Hollywood Land and Dazed & Confused. For most of his career he's not only made bad choices but most of his performances are flat or just terrible. I don't think he's a "good actor".

And like I've said in the past, he only knows how to play the character one way even though this character has 3 sides to him. He's on the level of Kilmer in my opinion. And he'll be remembered as the Batman who was older, grumpier, more violent, a dumb a-hole who looked good in a suit...but who never got to be in a solo Batman film. Instead he played in two superhero crossover movies that were bad (plus an extended cameo in another bad team-up movie). What a legacy!

I agree that Affleck is serviceable. With the right material he can do a good job, but he’s not what I’d consider a ‘great’ actor. I do think he would have been good enough to carry a decent characterisation of Batman though.

Affleck is only good in comedies. He sux doing anything else. His buddy Damon is the exact same.

I think Gyllenhall is a tad overrated even though I love the guy, but at least he has the ability to make one wanna watch a scene that he's in.
Affleck makes me wanna stop watching. He's that actor, Unless its a comedy.

I agree. Ben and Matt are dramatically ******ed. Although Damon can sometimes play a good a-hole in something like Departed or even Interstellar. Small doses. It just doesn't happen often.

With Affleck, he's good as the goofy a-hole in comedies. I can never take him seriously in anything else. Even Gone Girl, his performance only worked when he was acting like a goofy idiot. He has no subtlety as an actor, his facial expressions are always flat and sounds like he's self aware and trying too hard to remember lines. He's never been a comfortable screen presence for me. It's like he's "acting" and not just LIVING the character. I've never felt emotionally invested in anything he's done because he's not believable. He doesn't have gravitas plain and simple.

There's a scene in Justice League, on the plane with Alfred where he asks about "Diana". It is one of the worst deliveries. Check it out next time you watch JL. It's in the first act.

haha! I don't get why people talk about Gone Girl like it isn't a comedy. Its friggen hilarious.

I feel like Damon in the Departed is kind of what he's really like in reality, So though, I agree he was good in the movie, I feel it wasn't much of a performance.
Damon ruined Interstellar for me so I don't agree with you on that at all.
I loved the movie until the second I saw him but it was also here where the movie starts losing me in general.
I agree about small doses.

hahaha! Ya, I know what you're talking about. Affleck just totally sux
as Batman. He's on Par with Clooney to me as the worst Batman.

Gone Girl is a dark comedy for sure.

I would rank Affleck above Clooney, but more on par with Kilmer. I personally prefer Val in the role but I'll try to be fair.

Looks great to me. Obviously the cowl doesn't fit his face but whatever costume he gets will be tailored to him. I'm officially on the Jake G for Batman train. I think he would kill it.

I've been on the Jake train since he was rumored, he looks great in the bvs cowl there.

I'm on team Jake as well.

The DKR-inspired cowl doesn't suit Gyllenhaal's facial structure very well, but that manip gives a decent enough approximation to what his eyes and jaw would look like in a cowl. Color me impressed.

A Breyfogle/Aparo/Adams cowl would look even better.

I'm really not on any train but Jake would be someone I'd be cool with. He doesn't get me hyped like Bale did back in the day though. I remember I showed several people in my life American Psycho and Equilibrium when they had no idea who Bale was or why I was excited he was cast.

After BvS I thought there was real potential for BatFleck despite Batman being written as an utter dumbass. I thought with better writing in JL he would be something special but Affleck himself was disappointing there.

Damn. That works. Even in a quick and dirty manip, he really does work. There;s more going on there than in any of the official Affleck photos. The eyes are so important.
