Batman/Bruce Wayne Casting Thread - Part 4

With O'Brien, put a bit more muscle on him and give him a shorter, slicked-back haircut and I have an easier time seeing it. However, I'm not sure I could ever really buy him in a paternal, mentor role so I feel like casting him would effectively rule out Robin down the road.

He's not my first choice by any stretch, but for some reason the prospect intrigues me. On one hand because it's so left-field, and on the other hand because it would cause the DCEU Reddit to completely self-destruct.

I’m a frequenter of that subreddit and the delusion about Ben Affleck and Zack Snyder still boggles my mind.

Of Boom's list, O'Connell's a cool actor, about the only one of those I'd want to have a chance. But admittedly he doesn't really have the look down, like at all. Guess that's not a dealbreaker, but I guess everyone bar Keaton so far has had some resemblance to the usual book portrayals.

On the contrary, with a proper haircut and shave, O'Connell actually looks a lot like Bruce Wayne as traditionally depicted in the comics; only younger and shorter.

Off-topic, but it always irks me when they dye an actor's hair but don't touch their eyebrows.

Yeah, still don't see it with O'Connell, at least looks-wise. Every other aspect he's lightyears ahead of most of these guys though.

About TheBatFan's stuff on Bale, totally agreed. Seems kinda funny looking back, he was only 30 when casting for Begins was going on. That's damn young, but Bale felt like a fully-rounded adult. Y'know? It's not like there's that much of a generation difference here, 15 years or whatever, but Bale at 30 seemed like an adult man who'd been around the block and seen some ****. So many of these people being discussed (not all, but a lot) aren't all that much younger than he was then, if at all, but it's like apples & oranges.

That being said, I'm all for going young this time around, if only to separate it from the Snyder stuff, do a hard break and make it clear to the general audience it's a whole different beast. But if you're casting 27/28 or whatever, you've gotta cast someone who you can buy into them having been travelling around the world, getting roughed up physically and earning some scars on their soul along the way. That's a "mature" 27/28, you can't just grab any prettyboy actor with a hit or two under their belts and a currently hot name in the industry.

O'Connell has that Bale thing in spades, puts him way ahead of these others. Find it a little hard to visualize him as Bruce looks-wise, but that's just pure cosmetic/surface-level stuff, that's not as important as the substance stuff.

I think O’Connel needs just the right haircut. He doesn’t...not look like Bruce Wayne, I just think the resemblance is only obvious under specific circumstances.

If we're just throwing **** at the wall and seeing what sticks while gunning for a certain age range, might I suggest Giacomo Gianniotti?

He's on Grey's Anatomy and I'd have to imagine that being a series regular on a show that does 23-24-25 episodes a year would put one out of consideration here, but it's not like it's my job to work out the logistics of scheduling.

So let's place a game.

Of the baby candidates (i.e. those under 30), who are your favorite picks?

Alexander Pettyfer (turns 29 in April)
Aaron Taylor-Johnson (turns 29 in June)
Jeremy Irvine (turns 29 in July)
Jack O'Connell (turns 29 in August)
Dylan O'Brien (turns 28 in August)
Logan Lerman (turned 27 in January)
Ansel Elgort (turns 25 in March)
Noah Centineo (turns 23 in May)

Jack O'Connell is easily my number one pick. I think Taylor-Johnson would be good, and I must admit Irvine and O'Brien pique my curiosity. Pass on the others.

Irvine is an interesting suggestion. He was really good in War Horse and Beyond the Reach. Has he been rumored or were you just throwing his name out there?

I think KC Walsh mentioned him.

I'll hop aboard the Pattinson train. I want to see the reaction, I think he'd be good and I like his look, in that order.

He was in my compilation post of actors in the right age bracket, mainly because I LOVE his look. His face is so close to how I’ve always imagined a live-action Bruce, it’s freaky. BUT, I’m not familiar enough with his acting to consider him a good candidate. I have a friend who watches Grey’s and he seems decent enough from what I’ve seen on there but he’s hardly playing a Batman type there so IDK. He’s worth a screentest though I’d say.

Now that he mentioned it, I do get more of a Superman vibe.

Nah. Looks more like a rich pup than a farmboy.

Agreed. Also, in the purely physical sense, ideal Superman picks usually make solid Batmen anyway given their nearly identical features in the comics. They generally require a somewhat wider range, however, so as to convincingly exude both menacing and wholesome aspects of the character. Tyler Hoechlin and Patrick Warburton (in his prime) are notable examples.
