Batman/Bruce Wayne Casting Thread - Part 1

The Gyllenhaal thing is probably going to turn out to be much ado about nothing. Whenever some "insider" or columnist brings up a name for a big role, it usually goes to someone else. Did anybody say they knew Affleck was Batman before the announcement? Thinking about it more, Gyllenhaal might be an "interesting" choice, but I doubt can totally inhabit most of the "requirements" as far as the physical bearing of the character. He can definitely do obsessive and crazy, which is why it's slightly intriguing.

No photos have been released of the George Miller "JL" cast in costume, correct? I know a documentary is allegedly being made, so perhaps they'll show Hammer and the others in costume.

I'm really not on any train but Jake would be someone I'd be cool with. He doesn't get me hyped like Bale did back in the day though. I remember I showed several people in my life American Psycho and Equilibrium when they had no idea who Bale was or why I was excited he was cast.

Those two films were the reason why I was so excited to see Bale as Batman. Unfortunately, he never really brought that intensity in TDKT.

Jake G wouldn't be my first choice to succeed Affleck (or second, or third lol), but I wouldn't call him short; he's just an inch shy of Bale. I suppose one could argue that Batman needs to be taller (depending on your aesthetic preference for the character), but I only see that being a minor annoyance if he's paired with the current JL lineup. That's somewhat unlikely, though, given the current state of the DCEU.

I acknowledged most, if not all, of that in my previous post (even mentioned JG being only an inch shy of Bale). lol I'm just saying that it's arguable depending on your preference, and that it might only bother me if he's the shortest member of the league. In a standalone, I probably wouldn't care.

Yeah, I hear you. Sorry, been a bit of a busy day so I've been missing some details.

In the context of JL though, I think Gyllenhaal could still work. If they want to keep it canon that Batman is one of the taller members of the team, that can be accomplished Lord of the Rings style with camera tricks.

Eh. The Batfleck ears have been a tad on the short side, but I don't think I'd want them too much longer. Maybe throw an extra inch on.

Dude, same. It's the only real complaint I have with Affleck's suit.

The length of the ears doesn’t bother me but for the love of God give him a suit that’s not so bulky.

I didn't mind the short ears at first cuz of the Miller version. But now I'm sick of it. Also sick of the robotic suits.

I agree that Affleck is serviceable. With the right material he can do a good job, but he’s not what I’d consider a ‘great’ actor. I do think he would have been good enough to carry a decent characterisation of Batman though.

Agree. I like him in BvS and SS performance-wise. In JL he sucked, though. Maybe it's personal life, or complete lack of interest in playing the role... I don't know.

His performance in Justice League, pre-reshoots, is probably more in-line with his performance in BvS which I think is quite good.

Does anybody like Jon Hamm? Just watched Baby Driver last night and I thought he would be pretty great for Bats/Bruce. From the physical appearance to the voice.

Probaby way less chance of getting him than getting Jake G though. Just a thought.

Hey guys! It doesn’t matter that Gyllenhall is shorter than Affleck, or not as physically large as Affleck. It matters that he’s a better actor than Affleck.

The concern for looks and not for characterisation is one of the reasons Affleck’s Batman fails. I don’t care if the suit doesn’t look ‘ripped from the page’. I could care less if Bruce Wayne’s chin isn’t comic accurate. I don’t give a damn if he’s not 6 foot 4. I care that the character is realised well, and that the storyline he’s part of is high quality.

Character and story. Character and story.

Gyllenhall is a great pick, if those are your concerns... and they really should be.

Oscar Isaac would be good but he's too short sadly. IMDB says he is 5'9, but more likely 5'7.

Maybe it's best we get more of an unknown.

Wes Bentley might be a solid choice but i feel the studio would want a bigger name.

He's no Robert De Niro or Al Pacino, but Neither is JG. Affleck has provided some solid acting here and there, BvS happens to be one of those in my opinion.

maybe I'm biased, but JG is among the best actors of his generation. Maybe only Gosling has an edge on him or Tom Hardy. Or DiCaprio.

I believe Gyllenhaal is 5'11. Which is a good height. Affleck is 6'2 and (with his weightgain for B v S) he looked huge as Bruce/Batman.

I remember watching Michael Keaton as Batman and though he was 5'9, he looked super short.

Anything shorter than the Bale ears, looks ridiculous to me. The longer ears makes Batman look more demonic to me and thats what I want. The short ears make me laugh.

I hated the Miller design from the beginning. It just looks like expensive Cosplay. I think its awful for live action.

Jon Hamm is a good actor and all but believe me when I tell you that his face looks like my head down south of my anatomy. Only difference is that he has eyeballs and it creeps me out. I wouldn't want a Batman that reminds me of that everytime I see him on screen. I'm totally against his casting for anything cuz of this.
