Hey guys! It doesnt matter that Gyllenhall is shorter than Affleck, or not as physically large as Affleck. It matters that hes a better actor than Affleck.
The concern for looks and not for characterisation is one of the reasons Afflecks Batman fails. I dont care if the suit doesnt look ripped from the page. I could care less if Bruce Waynes chin isnt comic accurate. I dont give a damn if hes not 6 foot 4. I care that the character is realised well, and that the storyline hes part of is high quality.
Character and story. Character and story.
Gyllenhall is a great pick, if those are your concerns... and they really should be.
Batman originated in the pages of a comic book, so it's perfectly natural for people to have preferences as to how he should look in live-action. Consider this. If Daniel Radcliffe (a fine actor in his own right) was being considered to replace Affleck, you might not be keen on that coming to fruition on account of his obvious
ahem shortcomings. This indicates that while you may not have an ideal physical type for the role in question, you do at the very least have some vague idea floating around in your head. You want a convincing Batman, right? Maybe 5'7" is where you'd draw the line. Well, for others, anywhere from another 3 to 6 inches would be more appropriate; and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Sure, most of us I imagine would be thrilled to see the best possible actor get the part. No one's disputing that; but there's also such a thing as having the best of both worlds. And I like to think that's what we got in Affleck's Batman. Difficult as it may be for you to fathom, there are quite a few people (e.g., Daniel Alter, Mark Hughes, Vincent D'Onofrio, Kevin Conroy) who share the opinion that he gave more than a serviceable performance. That he also bears a strong resemblance to certain depictions of the character is just a plus.
Anyhow, as stated above, I personally don't have a problem with Gyllenhaal's height. He just wouldn't be my first choice to succeed Affleck. Based upon talent alone, someone like Michael Fassbender would be a much better fit. Again, though, as
both skill and physical appearance matter to me, my top choices at the moment would be Wes Bentley (who's also 5' 11") and the unlikely Richard Armitage.
Here's hoping that WB gets their act together before all the most suitable actors die of old age.
