Batman comics need a revamp.

Well back when the story was announced it was never said that R.I.P. stands for "Rest In Peace" and we still haven't been told what it stands for. Mind you it is some slick **** and could've been done with the intent of racking up more sales since it is a business but just saying we were never told.

Morrison also has said what happens to Batman in this story "is worse than death" and this will also lead to Batman's final fate in Morrison's Final Crisis. This was from jump so it was never a matter of "Batman's going to die" I think Batman as we know him will die but that is all. I don't think that Bruce Wayne himself will be physically dying.

One thing to remember about Morrison and his canonical DC stories is that as he has said he wants them all to read as one giant piece when he's done. Remember Nanda Parbat? I have no doubt that will come back up soon. We still don't know what happened there and Morrison was one of the writers on 52. At least I think we don't as I haven't read any issue of Batman before R.I.P. since club of heroes.

The concept of ressurection of Ra's repulsed me and I didn't bother with anything else after that. Trust me it's not that Morrison didn't turn me off at one point from his run it's just that I don't see anything else but a very entertaining story here.

all those wanting a hardboiled Batman can try Gotham Noir, see how much fun that is.

been into a comic shop lately? you'll see Killing Joke, Long Halloween and Year One mass ordered and prominently displayed.

the comics and films are two different markets, it's that simple. DC would be stupid to let the mainline titles play second fiddle to some movie

Let's see if we can make some sense of what you've said here:

First - you're dismissing the idea that a Batman comic done in a style similar to the Bendis and Brubaker Daredevil comics could work because of a one-shot (Gotham Noir) that came out 7 years ago. Okay...:whatever:

Next, you're saying that DC, and in turn comic book stores, are pushing some of their older Batman GN's and trades (and you presumably picked those three examples because they fit into the criteria that many have laid out in this thread for what they'd like to see in a revamped Bat-book) because of the movie. But then you say DC wouldn't want their mainline titles to "play second fiddle to some movie". I guess I don't understand what you're getting at here - are you saying that DC is purposefully trying to avoid producing a monthly comic that uses the Nolan films as a starting point, or that in anyway would remind readers of those films, because they want to distance themselves from that success? Or are you saying that DC wants to cash in on the success of the films, but are too proud to ride Warner Brother's coat tails? Or is it that DC, because they produce comics, don't pay attention to what happens to their properties in other media/markets? Because that, to me, would be really stupid.

Or are you just arguing for the sake of arguing?

R.I.P. is hardly confusing...

The only thing that makes R.I.P. confusing is Tony Daniel's piss-poor story-telling and lousy rendering. He needs to spend a few more years in school before he gets another shot drawing a major storyline.

Ya the thing with R.I.P. though it relates directly with the rest of his runs which have been pretty bad. R.I.P. I will agree that it does imply death however it doesn't necessarily have to be death. Though in reading it I will say whatever it is I just don't care. There is nothing in the series so far that has me concerned at all.

I think I especially have a disinterest because I never got into these Crisis things. It is debatable if his story is entertaining but I would rather have a good story that kind of delves into his emotions then what he has produced. I think that is why I have this disdain for Morrison because he seems to me to be the Michael Bay of comics.

Ya I have to admit I have trouble at times figure out whats going on in the page. Again like a Michael Bay movie.

I don't know, man. I mean the Batman books have not been mind blowingly amazing but they haven't really been that bad. Quite honestly I've been enjoying the Batman books the past year or two consistently. Ever since Dini took over Detective it's been a treat to read, espeically with Dustion Nguyen doing the interiors. And I have enjoyed Morrison's run thus far. I have not read the last part of RIP yet but Morrison is doing a fine job of tying up his run on the title. And, of course, there is All Star Batman which is contreversial. It seems people either like it or hate it. I happen to be one of those people that really likes it. I LIKE THE GODDAMN BATMAN! :cmad:

Anyhoo...I don't think they need a revamp. The regular continuity Batman has so much rich history even going back to the Year One storyline. Revamping the character could be suicide, in my opinion. What they need to do, if they want to suck in the newer readers from the movies, is do what Marvel did...start over but slap a different title on it. Ultimate Batman. Well, don't call it Ultimate Batman but call it something else. And just kind of start over that way and you will be able to have the newer readers from the movies transition to the character more easily.

But as a long time Batman reader things are all right. Could be better, could be worse.

Imagine being a 13-year-old kid, loving THE DARK KNIGHT film, deciding to try out a Batman comic and picking up one of the R.I.P. issues. I'd never want to read another comic book again. :woot:

I don't understand why DC hasn't tried to capitalize on the success of Nolan's films and start a new Bat-title that takes place in that universe. Get the team that did the Gotham Central series to do it (I realize most of those guys work at Marvel now, but that style and tone would work). I'd read it.

Imagine being a 21 year old who doesn't normally read comics but loves The Dark Knight/Batman Begins take on it and tries to read a Batman comic.

That's me. I like Detective but Batman is awful, especially this RIP garbage. Hush was my first graphic novel and is my favorite.

Stay calm. It's just how comics works these days. Stories written by fanboys for fanboys, edited by fanboys, published by companies led by fanboys.

True professionals and businessmen are rare.

This is the biggest problem for comics.

Yet you say that on this site and you get blasted for it.

I took a class all about comics to fill an English requirement and EVERYONE in my class (who were not familiar with comics) agreed.

My continuity would go Batman Year One, The Long Halloween, Robin Year One, Death in the family, The Killing Joke, and The Dark Knight Returns.

The villians will be consisting only of Poison Ivy, Joker, Harley Quinn, Two Face, Penguin, Mr Freeze, Scarecrow, Riddler, Ventriloquist, Hugo Strange, Solomon Grundy, Man Bat, Catwoman, and Black Mask. No more no less.

DC should do an "Ultimate Batman" type thing with realistic settings and stories. More of a noir feel than the "super-hero"/sci-fi **** we get now

Well if there were any artist around my area who like Batman as much as I do, I'd want to do this type of thing. I'm a writer and I have a good outline plan for a revamp Batman comic-series. I'm a terrible artist, but I make up for it with writing.

I'd really like to get back into Comics, but everytime I go to the local dealer and pick up issues, they just seem so dull and dilluted to me. Certian things interest me. Frank Miller's Batman series was good, but it was in Franks continuity which I could deal with. But the actual standard issues of continutiy with Batman just have gotten a bit out of hand in my opinion. I started getting into these comics during the late 80's and early 90's and I enjoyed it. They weren't all great, but they kept a good flow. I pick up issues today and I'm confused all over.

I really think there's a goldmine to capitalized on the "Nolanverse" if you will.

New readers would be more familiar with the Batman movies than the comics, it only makes business sense to base a comic off of that universe and those philosophies of hyperrealism.

Hell, one of the things that attracts me (no homo) to Batman is the fact that he is a human, and I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that the Nolanverse is based in a more realistic world.
