Batman Forever

In Batman Begins, he becomes a costumed crime-fighter and in TDK he becomes The Dark Knight. Nolan said that TDK follows Batman's transition from being a crime-fighter that dresses like a bat to The Dark Knight.

What has that got to do with the topic of this thread?

One of the greatest scenes in any Batman film, and certainly the darkest, occurs in Forever. Completely contrary to any ideas of campness, Schumacher not only grounded Robin and made him a believable figure, he also used his parallels with Bruce to look right into Bruce's character. This leaves Bruce's best ever dialogue, which I've highlighted.

Dick Grayson: All I can think about every second of the day is getting Two-Face. He took my whole life. And when I was out there tonight, I imagined it was him that I was fighting, even when I was fighting you. And all the pain went away. Do you understand?

Bruce Wayne: Yes, I do.

Grayson: Good, 'cause you gotta help me find him. And when we do, I'm the one who kills him.

Wayne: So, you're willing to take a life.

Grayson: Long as it's Two-Face.

Wayne: Then it will happen this way: you make the kill, but your pain doesn't die with Harvey, it grows. So you run out into the night to find another face, and another, and another, until one terrible morning you wake up and realize that revenge has become your whole life. And you won't know why.

Grayson: You can't understand. Your family wasn't killed by a maniac.

Wayne: Yes, they were. We're the same.

That was a great scene. Batman Forever is my favorite out of the Burton/Shumacher films.

I love that scene. Not my fav. in the bat-films, but surely my fav. in BF. I tend to watch that scene a lot whenever I pop BF on my tv.

All I know is, loath it or love it, when I was 7 or 8 when this came out, Nicole Kidman was the hottest thing I'd ever seen.

Quoted for truth.

And all the people hating on this are just riding the current wave of superiority complexes.

This film stands up just fine as part of the Bat-Universe...FAR superior to 'Returns' in many ways- which was more like a Brothers Grimm fairy tale than a Superhero movie.

Verily verily! She may very well have been the hottest of the Batman love interests (even though I love Michelle Pfeiffer as well).

True. I want a Director's Cut with all the deleted stuff integrated, and the timeline altered to what it was in the script. That would make it much better in my opinion.

I agree, i was better than Batman Returns. Not better than Batman, But better than Batman Returns.

Why oh why the batnipples and the assshots... and the stupid villains...

without... Batman Forever would be great!

I can sit though BF but can't do it when it comes to B&R.

yeah i agree, batman forever was good for its time, on the other hand, batman and robin reminded me of the power rangers meet batman.

Jim Carreys funny... otherwise its impossibly silly... man... i think the idea was to inject the feeling of having so much skittles that you puke, onto celluloid. :wow::grin::wow::grin:

Oh man, in that case you should (and by that I really mean shouldn't) check out the Justice League America TV movie from 1997. It's literally Power Rangers....meets Friends. And that's not just a sarcastic putdown, you can clearly see that's what the producers were trying to make. :wow:

I hadn't watched the movie in awhile, but when I watched it last night, I started thinking...

It's really a very good Batman movie. It has alot of flaws, sure, but at the end of the day it's a very entertaining movie that captures the spirit of Batman very well. Outisde of Batman Begins, its the best characterization of Batman/Bruce Wayne by far, I really like the psychology of the character and his interaction with Chase is better than his interaction with any other Batman love interest. The Robin storyline is handled pretty well. And whether you hate his overacting or not, Jim Carrey does the Riddler great justice.

The only real lowlight of the movie to be is Tommy Lee Jones getting two face all wrong, and the stupid neon light Gotham. And that ridiculous chase scene where Batman drives up a wall. Other than that, it's really quite good... It's a shame that it often gets coupled up with Batman and Robin as Schumaker's horrible Bat-movies, because it's really LIGHTYEARS better than B&R.

Anyone else think Batman Forever is underrated?
Dude, I completely agree. For a kids movie, it gets the spirit and psychology of Batman pretty well. (The mere idea of Batman dating a shrink is awesome) It's got a much stronger plot that Burton's films, and gives Batman an internal conflict. I even think that Tommy Lee Jones had moments where he was a great Two-Face (His opening scene was excellent, and when he tells Batman that Bruce was always a good friend)
The thing is, Joel Schumacher tells his stories almost entirely though visuals, and was given the instructions from the studio to make a more marketable movie. So the movie is visually stunning, but it's alot easier for a weak script with corny one-liners to get its way into the film. There are shots in the film that I still adore (The overhead shot of everyone in the circus solemnly walking towards to corpses of the Grayson family, Batman looking pissed emerging from the fire, every image of Nicole Kidman :woot:)

Aside from some cartoony and un-threatening performances, weak dialogue, and bizarre costume choices like this:

(The entire idea of the pink hair pisses me off)

I think Batman forever is the fourth best batman movie, under Dark Knight, Batman Begins, and Mask of the Phantasm.

Edit: Also, the batman-robin costumes (except for the nipples) are amazing.

Batman Forever?

It's mostly rubbish. They really dropped the ball and really seemed to miss the point of the characters. Also, just the fact the movie didn't seem to know what it was trying to be. At least B&R has a clear "personality".

I've just watched this again recently and i gotta say i did enjoy it. Two-Face wasn't really Two-Face though.(not Tommy-Lee's fault) But the speech he gave at the start to that bank guard "It's like a touch of god" was absolutely brilliant, but from then on it went down hill for Two-Face. He isn't supposed to be a scenery chomper, hes supposed to be brooding with rage, not acting like a Joker rip-off. As for Val Kilmer? I thought he was brilliant, I don't know why some people don't rate his acting abilities, if you doubt him just watch The Doors. O'Connel was pretty good too, started off broody and appeared to have a dark side beneath that hot-shot exterior, good for Robin, but he would of made a better Nightwing.
