Batman OYL discussion thread

spoilers maybe...????
in the latest issue of robin, the DC Nation page thing at the back, the preview for the next issue says...
"Tim adjusts to life as Bruce Wayne's son in stately Wayne Manor..."

I read that as well. Even though a lot of people have speculated that that was the the direction Bruce was going with Tim. Especially the whole reference of him telling Alfred, "I know it's what my father would do." I posted a theory long before in the Robin OYL thread explaining why I thought he'd adopt him again in the first place. Though the only thing that some miss, is that Bruce attempted to make Tim his ward after Identity Crisis. Tim made false records showing that he had an uncle, in which Bruce later found out. Instead of being angry in any way, he was proud of Tim for using his abilities.

so i'm guessing the new Batman and Son arc is about Bruce and Tim....?
and the plan bruce had for tim was adoption?

He had a son with Talia named Ibn al Xu'ffash. Grant Morrison is bringing back Son of the Demon continuity. The lastest solicitation indicates that Tim and Ibn will an encounter with one another.

Part 3 of the 4-part "Batman and Son," by the incomparable team of writer Grant Morrison and artists Andy Kubert & Jesse Delperdang! Batman brings his son home to Gotham City and introduces him to both Wayne Manor and the Batcave! But when Batman's new son meets Robin sparks — and swords — will fly!

:(
i was hoping Ibn wasn't going to come back into continuity.
hopefully Talia is just lieing and it isn't really Bruce's child.
but Helena should be Bruce's for sure. ;)

You know I haven't been excited for Batman titles since Hush ( Loeb and Lee of course).

I've enjoyed both Kramer's and Fair's artwork on both titles, of the arc.

No, I mean Kramer and Fair on Batman. And Kirk and Andy Clarke on Detective.

I agree, but now that someone has said that there is gonna be someone with their lil radar going off and posting here saying "omg wtf is with all the hype and praise for Lee and Loeb" (or just Lee)...I've seen it so many times..

I actually really like the interior art. I've been a fan of Kramer since he was working on JSA. He's really evolved as an artist since then. Hell, if someone told me he was going to do Batman, back when he started around issue 51 or so, I would have laughed at them. His art was too comic-booky, his facial expressions were off and it was too dark. Now, that I'm reading his Batman, I know that he is the perfect low key artist for the Bat.

BATMAN #654:

REVIEW:
Story: Harvey is now Two Face again and he has taken control of Gotham Zoo. The hostages includes the people who work there at night and animals. Batman & Robin head on to stop him, while feeling guilt, Batman knows he's innocent. After some beat downs, Batman finally confronts the real man who framed Harvey and tells his proposal to Tim.

The finale is here. Its hard to do finales to storylines in comics. This is a final confronation tied to an epilogue of the story. What Robinson decided to do with this arc was tell a true detective, mystery story featuring Batman. The ending has a sherlock holmes/Law & Order: Criminal Intent feel when he confronts the real killer. Now I could be saying this because of this arc and this may have happened before and I just don't remember so bear with me.

Now I know what peole want to know first from this finale so I'll do that first. What is Bruce's plan for Tim: well its what everyone thought it would be. Bruce wants to adopt Tim as his ward since he has no family anymore, and while Bruce himself converted a stable to be Tim's new home , since they are a family and a team, he wants to adopt him so he won't be alone forever. But he can't do that if he wants, he wants to hear if Tim wants to be a ward and asks him. Tim's answer...its a yes. Is this a problem? I don't think so. Bruce Wayne after Infinite Crisis is a changed man. Not a dick anymore. Having Tim Drake as a ward is a good idea since Bruce knows he die this to Dick Grayson, worked out well but the darker times were kicking in and seperated the connection. He probably wants to fix that, number one. And two: he wants to help Tim to have a family again after he loss his father and his friend due to the Crisis.

Him being a changed man has been shown throughout this arc and other OYLs (ex. Robin). Before IC, if he thought Havey did these crimes, he would've stayed on that to the very end, not even for a second thinking otherwise. And then be pisted off that he was wrong. Now; he knew Harvey didn't do it and just what: he was right. Yet, he has some guilt if he had done it which he didn't (pointed out by Robin, another reason why he needs him).

And who was the real culprit? At first we all thought it was Two Face doing the crimes to force Harvey back, thought I did, but it wasn't the case. It was someone else and we didn't have ANY clue whatsoever that it was this guy. The real culprit was Warren White aka The Great White Shark. Reason? He was one of those guys who would ruin people's lives. But he didn't have anythign against Dent at first. He has been setting up to be Gotham's new Crime Boss from Arkham. Something that even made Penguin leave. He had business with the villians that apepared in this arc but Dent was in their way as he was stopping them from moving. To counter this, Warren White hired Tally Man to kill and frame Dent. Thus making Dent believe he was the killer and losing trust with Batman that made him become Two Face.

THAT was unexpected. And I'am sorry if that spoiled you.

Overall; this was a good issue. A new villian, return of an old one, and finally a new beginning for Tim Drake's life as this is a new beginning for Batman & Robin. With this issue, Batman OYL is over and its time to move on from that. This was a great start for new readers and it worked out well.

For those who didn't get these issues, then get the TPB.

RATING: 9/10

In the actual dialouge, Bruce says
"The laws have changed. I can't adopt you as my ward. For you to have the security I feel you deserve... I'd have to adopt you as my son."

I think the fact that Bruce is going to adopt Tim as his son will play a big role in the upcoming "Batman and Son" arc.

Yeah. The difference between son and ward may well have been a request Morrison had for Robinson.

What did I get wrong?

Doesn't seem I wrote anythign wrong in my review.

The conclusion with The Great White Shark seemed kinda shaky and tacked on to me. Robinson seemed to rush that part of it to fit the final issue, in my opinion.

Agreed. It's like Loeb stepped in and wrote the final issue. It was a classic Loebian ending (see The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Hush). Rushed, nonsensical, and generally lacking any form of the satisfying payoff that the previous issues had built up to. What I wouldn't give to read a Batman detective story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. There's a chap who could finish a detective yarn.

I Knew Bruce was going to ask Tim to become his heir to The Wayne Family . I just knew it .
