Please hunter, don't move this. There is no traffic in the other Batman forums. This thread is inspired by ANTHONYNASTI, a couple of other posters, and I discussing Burton's Bat films in the Lounge thread. I just want to see the opinions of everyone else regarding Batman Returns. This is about if you like it the movie or not.

For me, I didn't think it was terrible, but it never loved it either. I think that it is an OK film. I find the film to be a bit too dark and grim for my tastes. I also don't like the overall plot of the movie and the dark representation of Penguin. I wasn't too fond of Catwoman, either. However, I do think that Batman and Max Shreck stole the show. I'd give it 2 1/2 out of 4 stars.

This thread is not about comparing Batman Begins to prior Batman films. And please, don't Casino Royale this movie (meaning, just because we've had an amazing reboot doesn't mean we have to treat the prior material like shyit.

A side note:

The great things about Burton's Bat-films, namely Batman Returns, is that it has the dark fantasy and comic book atmosphere that Nolan's world lacks. I do think that Batman Begins is, by far, the best Batman film (though at one time, Batman was my favorite and I still like it today) and I adore Nolan's realistic take on it, as well as his overall direction. I love that Nolan (who I think is superior to Burton) fleshed out his characters more, and stayed truer to the source material than Burton ever came close to doing. However, I do like Burton's twists on his movies. I like Michael Keaton's Wayne/Batman a tad bit more than Christian Bale's Wayne/Batman, and the fact that the dark Batman we got in Burton's films were like they were taken straight out of the comic books. With the two film's scores, a part of me loves Danny Elfman's score (namely the darker Returns score) and apart of me love Hans Zimmer's/James Newton Howard's score.

I love BR, It's one of the best comic book films out there, on a far with B89. It's cinematography manages to be captivating yet again and the performances and characterisation, whilst not wholly accurate are truley amazing and iconic.

My favorite (redeeming) Batman Returns scenes:

^The score is amazing.

^One of my favorite movie scenes of all-time.

^Probably my favorite scene in the whole movie.

^I love the scene when Batman descends down his grappler.

It's a great movie. Even better than Batman 89'. The Penguin and Catwoman are amazingly portrayed.

Batman Returns is the most artistic superhero film EVER MADE!

Batman is nothing but a dark character. At a young age, he witnessed one of the most traumatic things a child can experience: seeing their parents murder. As a young man in his 20s, he uses the appearance of the bat to raise fear in the hearts of criminals. One of his archenemies is a psychotic clown. Other members of his rogues gallery are darker versions of things that aren't (plants, another psychotic clown in the case of Harlequin), and some are also twisted versions of things (with Two-Face- justice, with the Riddler- comedy), and some of his villains are nothing but dark (Scarecrow, Zsasz).

While Tim Burton does enjoy dark and twisted stuff, and while not a big comics fan, I think he did an excellent job in showing on film that Batman is supposed to be dark.

Batman Begins is also dark, but not as dark as the Burton films, but just as enjoyable for me

I saw this and batman one night back when fox was a good channel and DAMN it was bliss... tha good ol days...

I dunno maybe. but movies were more like a special occasion, not really something you do often back then. I still don't see many movies in the theater today unless its something special.

Well, I was poor back in 92. I was 13.

Now if I lived in Alaska back then, I could have already been making money crab fishing

Batman Begins was good but too "dry". :o

I can't stand to watch Returns anymore. It's just...stupid. I liked it as a kid.

Is it stupid cause you don't get it or because you think Burton was unfaithful to the comics?!

Eh, I'm not too fond of this particular film. I remember liking it when I saw it in theaters, but then again, I was about four or five years of age. I recently watched it again on television, and while I somewhat enjoyed watching Danny DeVito bite a man's nose, the film itself just didn't do it for me.

I guess one of the things that bothered me was not so much the fantasy aspect of it, but the lack of continuity it shared with Burton's first go at Batman. Now, when I say continuity, I'm not strictly speaking of plot holes and such concerning the story, but more of the atmosphere, design, cinematography, etc. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to slam all of those elements of it, but I think it would have felt a lot more stable if Burton had kept some of the original nuances of the first picture, making it feel more like the continued story of the Batman he introduced us to.

It just seemed Burton was trying to cram too much of his Burtoneque trademarks into the film, one of which being the isolated, "no one understands me" character, the Penguin. I did somewhat enjoy the character, but to be perfectly honest, he just seemed to much of a Burton stereotype. At times it felt like I was watching a prologue to Edward Scissorhands. The score was also a major contributor to this comparison as well, with its heavy use of bells and child-like chorus themes. But thats just my two cents.

IMO, Batman Returns is the best of the Burton/Schumacher films. I love the dark gothicness of it.:word:
