Batman is the greatest animated show ever created. Justice League was really great

4 favorite shows of all time
1. all 4 seasons BTAS
2. Breaking Bad
3. JL/JLU
4. STAS

expected to see B:TAS dominating. Wasn't disappointed.

I really think of all of the animated shows (within the Timm-verse) as one show, so it's tough to compare them for me.

Wow this sub-forum really deserves to exist with titillating and original thread content like this.

I voted JLA because we got to see some of the lesser adapted DC settings like Oa and lesser known characters like Red Tornado and Stargirl. B:TAS is still the best animated Bats 'toon to date.

Justice League/Unlimited thousand times over.

Both shows are brilliant, but I'd have to go with JLU. Obviously showed much more of the DC Universe than BTAS did.

Batman TAS had simplier stories, but with a lot of heart, and great characterization.

JL was boring. JLU had some interesting stories, but the characterization was simply awful. Superman was always brooding and unpleasant, and so was Wonder Woman. Green Arrow was always hiding being hierarchy (seriously?) and being a better fighter than Black Canary (again, seriously?). Flash was made stupid, even if in some episodes he seemed capable. John Stewart was totally boring. Batman was badass/bland. He doesn't even seem to be the same character he was in TAS. The Question, while rather different from the Ditko and O'neil Eras, was awesome. I liked how he worked with Huntress.

Their attempts at building larger story arcs was interesting, but there were too many continuity issues. Why would orion be there to help Flash and Batman, but would be absent when Darkseid is attacking earth?

Overall, I think JL and JLU are far from being great.

Agreed on most points. Lots of people seem to defend JL/JLU due to their unwillingness to take off the nostalgia goggles. There's no denying that these shows had a big hand in making DC characters heavily recognizable outside of comic fans (with the exception of Superman and Batman who were well known anyway). But it was deeply flawed for many of the reasons you listed here.

However, I disagree that JL was boring. Actually, I liked the series much more before it transformed into JLU. They packed in too many characters that we cool to see, but gave us no reason to care about. Green Arrow, Question, and a few others are obvious exceptions, but the majority of the new cast members were glorified cameos.

that's a fair point.

I could say the same for BTAS. In fact, I'd argue that BTAS is more guilty of being nostalgia-filtered.

Fair enough. I guess you caught me in the middle of my bias.

But I've got something of a plot twist for you: I didn't grow up on either. I was a kid around JL/JLU time, but I didn't watch it. I was a full on Marvel kid since the Spiderman trilogy was up and running simultaneously. DC didn't even cross my mind until many years later.

It was only a couple years back when the Avengers hype was building that I gave DC a serious look. I started with the accessible stuff: cartoons and movies. I watched JL and JLU straight through and loved it. I then watched Teen Titans straight through (which I actually did watch quite a bit... a bit further down the road from my Spiderman days) and enjoyed that as well.

It was only with the free time of college that I started to get into watching Batman TAS. I only tried it out since it got so much praise and was expecting to see the greatest cartoon ever. I don't know how far I can support that statement, but I certainly wasn't disappointed.

So, I personally don't have nostalgia goggles for either of these. If anything, TT should be mine and I think I liked it least of the three. I genuinely think that BTAS is the best of the bunch.

And I realize that you weren't accusing me of it, but I just thought I should point that out. But you're right, it's a fair point that people act the same way on both sides.

No worries. :)

TT was my thing when I was a kid, too. I've seen bits of JL/JLU and BTAS at that age, but never really got into them. I didn't watch all of them in their entirety until a few years ago. I enjoyed both series, but I genuinely thought JL/JLU was better.

Not just because of that, it was simply a great tv show and one of the best animated one, on it's prime, it had some of the most creative use of animation and styles.
