The iPhone-controlled BB-8 toys, about the size of a large Granny Smith apple, will be sold in Disney Stores and other specialty retailers this holiday season. (Eighty manufacturing steps are involved.) Disney declined to discuss the price. A much bigger BB-8, similar to one Lucasfilm introduced at a “Star Wars” fan convention here on Thursday, will pop up at Disney theme parks around the world.

He is the most adorable robot not named Wall-E that I have ever seen.

Wooah, pump ya brakes, more adorable than R2? Don't get me wrong, I think BB-8 will be a worthy successor, but R2 is the king. Watching him get shot in ANH was like watching your cat get run over by a car. I shot right in the feels watching that as a kid for the first time.

In respect to BB-8's design, the more I think about it, his design feels like someone doing the same update treatment that the Stormtroopers got to R2. ie. Making everything just a bit rounder and more curved.

I don't understand your problem with someone wanting to record a cool moment on their own device. Plus, you make it sound like they're only watching the whole event through their phones. Do you also have a problem with people taking pictures of the event?

No [BB-8 isn't named after Bryan Burk]! But don’t tell Bryan that.

I named him BB-8 because it was almost onomatopoeia. It was sort of how he looked to me, with the 8, obviously, and then the 2 B’s.

It’s funny how sometimes, the bad ideas, you try them out and kick the tires a little bit, and it just kind of falls apart and you can go somewhere else, you’ve just got to know it’s temporary. And that one, he never had another name. But Bryan Burk, whom I adore, is not the father of that name.
