The Dark Knight BD Live Chat with Christopher Nolan

Pressure from the studio for a 3rd film: No real pressure. Goyer & him are now exploring if they have a story they're excited to tell.

Nolan not only displayed the proposal, but asked a follow up on it

AND SHE SAID YES

Someone just proposed to their gf via this chat.
Reminds me of this:

Jason wanted to propose creatively to his girlfriend, Maui. So he conspired with comics legend, sf writer and all-round mensch Neil Gaiman: when Neil spoke in the Philippines, they would attend and Maui would queue up for a signature afterward. When she reached Neil, he would write "Will you marry Jason?" on the inside of her book and hand it back to her, and romance would ensue.

Goyer and Nolan are going over the story for the third film right now.

How did he phrase it?

Was it like: "we are working out IF there is a story worth telling"

or

"We are working out the story now."

Was your original vision of the film longer than the 2 1/2 hour cut it ended up being?
First cut was 15 minutes longer. In my process, rather than removing whole scenes, we try and squeeze the narrative down to the tightest form it can be and this takes various versions and many months.

Surprised at the box office?
We were all extremely surprised but obviously very pleased with how many people came to see it.

On casting Tiny Lister jr.
It was great working with Tiny. He is an extremely talented actor and I was fortunate that he was willing to take on this small role.

Are you feeling real pressure from the studio to do a 3rd film?
The studio is being very understanding about my process. The question of doing a third film is all down to story and do we have a story we really are excited about. David goyer and myself are exploring that right now.

Intended to use Batman's lenses in the first film but couldn't find a reason in the story to do so.

It sounds like they're seeing IF there is a story and IF it's exciting enough to tell at the moment. Nothing more than that.

I know that quite a few of us here, including myself, wouldn't want it any other way.

^^ Agreed.

About no mention of Bruce's parents in TDK: Not relevant to his driving force in this one as opposed to "Batman Begins". He is more influenced by tragedy here. (I think I paraphrased that right)

What IS it with both Nolans' use of "and myself?" :funny: Jonah does that pretty constantly as well.

Why is he consulting Goyer? Tell him to get on the boards and consult us!
No man, that's a TERRIBLE idea. :o

Nolan would only do that as a LAST resort, which, if he gets to that point, he should move on to another film. Have your read some of the story ideas on here?

Ask hm about the progress of The Prisoner film! I love the t.v. show and it's kind of been up in the air if he'll do it or not.

the big question was asked about 5 dead, 2 of them cops, he said he'd answer it one day but not today

Who exactly are the five people, including the two cops?
I will answer this question one day. But not today.

"i will answer this question one day. but not today"

in reference to "five dead, two cops"

sigh
