Ben Affleck To Direct & Star In 'Argo'

Great flick.

Superb direction despite a plot that felt predictable & characters that weren't properly fleshed out.

I think the film needed an extra half hour to develop these people a bit more.

8.5/10

Considering it was based off a historical event and we knew the final outcome, how unpredictable you want it to get? I was on the edge of my seat in the final 30 minutes or so even though I knew they were getting out alive– which was a true testament to the script and Affleck's directing.

I didn't know that one chick was Clea Duvall at first. She seemed familiar.

Fantastic movie. I'm guessing the script will get some kind of Oscar nom, and while it was solid, I found it rather average and a bit scattered, though it does a very nice job balancing the tenser elements while infusing enough levity without it feeling forced into the dialogue. The film drags a bit when the plan first gets going, but picks up the pace again soon afterward and never really lets up. This film is a notable accomplishment because Ben Affleck elevated it with his directing work. And what a job he did. A deft touch regarding historical and dramatic elements with a lot of really nice subtleties when other approaches would have been much easier. The cast delivers and then some. Loved the work done by almost everyone, especially Alan Arkin and Brian Cranston in supporting roles.

9/10 - just one thing I didn't like from the film and just remembered although this is a really minor thing... I hated how they introduced his character by him waking up. It's just... it's become a cliche over the years that I could see that moment coming from a mile away - wakes up, gets a call, goes in. Loses a point, oddly, because it should have been longer. We have longer movies in theaters, and movies of this genre, and this could have easily been one of them... just the film part of it seemed to flash by.

Yep. Definitely need to see this. Out this week in Australia so I hope I can see it on the weekend.

My video review for Argo if you're interested!

I saw this over the weekend. Though it is my least favorite of Afflecks 3 films (at least at this point, repeat viewings can change things), I really enjoyed it and thought the film delivered.

Right now it's safe to say even his worst is good.

I finally got around to seeing this. Excellent film (historical inaccuracies used to bug me, but not so much anymore as long as they are not done for the wrong reasons).

Of the films this year, I'd place this maybe under Moonrise Kingdom and above Arbitrage.

I saw this the other day - this was some of the biggest load of American propaganda I've seen in a long time. Incredibly aggravating to me.

Outside of that, the film was LITTERED with continuity mistakes and the dialogue was horrendous - one-liner after one-liner. Horribly cheesy - especially with that American flag shot of Afleck at the end.

Even worse, I'm Persian Canadian. :p

In all seriousness, I'm not offended based on ethnicity (Persian) or nationality (Canadian) - I'm pissed off because I know the history behind this and the way they selectively portrayed the Americans vs the Iranians is embarrassing. It's horrendous to think of how almost every North American viewer of this film saw it with an unexposed eye and wholeheartedly loving the film.

We love the film because its a great film. It's ridiculously well made, top notch acting and crazy intense

Frankly, I wasn't even familiar with the story that much. I followed up and while it takes some liberties, I don't think it's as bad as you say.

By now people should know that anything based on a true story should be cautious that it's not exactly 100% how it happened. I can't name a single film that followed note for note on some true event.

It was a splendid movie, but the only thing that makes it special really is the way they captured seventies.

I kind of get where you're coming from; at the end of the day, I think the movie struck a good balance politically. I would suggest it is unfair to portray this movie as being pro-American jingoism; right off the bat, the movie makes it clear that the USA was the architect of its own problems by helping to depose a democratically-elected socialist government. Not too many Americans know their own country helped create the Iranian bogeyman they fear today.

There is also the complaint that this movie puts too much emphasis on the CIA's role in the rescue; every piece of historical evidence indicates that this really was planned and executed by Canada, with the CIA lending resource support, not the other way around as this movie suggests.

However, Canada's role has been well documented, so it is not to the detriment of the movie that it chooses to focus on just one aspect of the Canadian Caper.

Godzilla, Star Wars, and Happy Gilmore prove you wrong.

And who the hell wants to watch a movie about a bunch of Canadians? Even Scott Pilgrim couldn't get over that hurdle.

I'm gonna give you a proper reply when I get home, but it was certainly NOT a balanced perspective.

It was pretty balanced for the most part. Though the Canadian involvement was downplayed
