Benedict Cumberbatch is Doctor Strange

Yeah, he's basically in a bunch of comedies that generally appeal to American sensibilities. His biggest recognition probably has to do with him appearing with Will Farrell.

Obviously, I'm talking about American name recognition as opposed to global name recognition. I know I'm being myopic about that, but these movies are still produced by an American studio, so whether someone is "too recognizable" would be something determined by Americans.

Ghostcrow13, damn, I had no idea Parks and Rec was that bad ratings-wise (although I guess I contribute to that). That's fair enough.

I think it is. I bet a lot of non-Americans couldn't even tell you who Paul Rudd is, but they'd know Benedict Cumberbatch.

Paul Rudd is pretty famous, but Sherlock is just so massive around the world, I think it is like comparing Lebron James and Lionel Messi. Yeh most Americans would pick out Lebron and probably not many Messi but for the rest of the world it is the opposite.

I think overseas this could really be huge, especially if Sherlocks chinese fanbase keeps growing and those fans then get interested in seeing this film.

I think it's more like comparing tennis players James Blake with Andy Murray. One was known to American audiences because he was an American player, but the other is more known by the rest of the world.

heh, had to google Lebron James

I lamented back in October that I thought Cumberbatch was a bit of a cliche choice, but sometime cliche works. I think he'll do a good job.

No one cares about tennis in the states. The Lebron/Messi comparison is better.

I just finished the five issue limited series THE OATH, by Brian K. Vaughn (Of SAGA and Y THE LAST MAN fame). It features Doctor Strange, Night Nurse, and Wong together.

Strange, written in this series, is absolutely Cumberbatchian in his dialogue and mannerisms. To a frightening degree really.

Night Nurse is written awesomely as well.

Paul Rudd is a big star in the UK. Basically, if you're a big star in American movies and your name is not Tyler Perry, your popularity has also translated over to audiences on this side of the Atlantic.

I just saw this picture of Will Ferrell and he looked eerily like a fatter Cumberbatch. They got the same eyes, dude.

:o

I have been checking this thread every day since the marvel event in NY. I couldnt be happier at this announcement. Marvel Studios is one of the few companies that have like a psychic link with their fanbase and supporters. MASSIVE RESPECT to the Feige.

Cumberbatch is more known and loved by the rest of the world than Paul Rudd. I bet more people know his name than Rudd, who is in fact more of a niche than Cumberbatch.

A LOT more.

Here in India everybody has watched Sherlock and loves Cumberbatch, but very few know the name of Paul Rudd

Rudd more known in America as the comedies he's most famous for are popular pretty much in America and doesn't have much of an international presence.

Cumberbatch plays a character known all around the world and channel that's pretty popular all around the world. Not to mention, he has been in an actual tentpole movie compared to Rudd who has never been in a single tentpole movie.

I think that settles it: Curly Fu*, loved in China and India, that might be a slightly bigger fan base than the rest of the MCU stars together

*I love that name

I've been away so not been able to comment on this casting - Brilliant - He was in my top 2 picks for Strange (Oscar Isaac being the other).

So pleased they sealed the deal.

Now onto the casting for Baron Mordo - You realise I'm so going to gloat if it's Mads Mikkelsen? :)

I don't know if I would call Paul Rudd a big star in the UK. I would say he is about mid-level. Rudd has some recognition but he isn't a household name.

This. He definitely doesn't have that level of recognition in the UK. People might know him if you reminded them of some movie he played in, but his name alone doesn't automatically ring a bell in the same way that other actual big stars do in the UK.

Rudd will finally get his chance to shine in a tentpole for Ant-Man.

I always found it funny when people said Cumberbatch is overexposed, but people don't consider 2 things:

1. He's only been in 2 tentpole franchises (and one of them he didn't physically show in).
2. He's never been the lead in a tentpole.

He's in a popular TV Show, and has done a bunch of smaller movies, but that's it. Cumberbatch represents more of an organic rise to stardom as opposed to what Hollywood did with Taylor Kitsch and Alex Pettyfer.

This is a good point to make, actually. We might consider Benedict Cumberbatch "overexposed" on here and communities like this, because in our comic fan circles, Cumberbatch has been suggested for every role under the sun for years now. But to the wider film-going community, he's a popular TV star who's had some leading roles in acclaimed smaller films, and some supporting roles in blockbusters. You could argue he's maybe at a similar level acclaim that George Clooney was at when he took the Batman & Robin gig: an avid fan following due to becoming closely identified with a role in a highly popular TV series, plus some notable roles in some well-received films. Let's just hope Doctor Strange turns out better than that did!

Gotta remember that this movie is two years away and he's going to be filming it for awhile so he'll be in fewer films and be less exposed so I think by the time this comes out his star will be ready to explode .

Exactly!

He chooses his roles very carefully it seems, he isn't the kind to just join a franchise for the money and this gives me confidence that the script must be really good

He will have played Sherlock, Stephen Hawking and Stephen Strange. Also Alan Turing now
I doubt there is anyone else with so many iconic roles of genius guys
