Yeah, he's basically in a bunch of comedies that generally appeal to American sensibilities. His biggest recognition probably has to do with him appearing with Will Farrell.
Obviously, I'm talking about American name recognition as opposed to global name recognition. I know I'm being myopic about that, but these movies are still produced by an American studio, so whether someone is "too recognizable" would be something determined by Americans.
Ghostcrow13, damn, I had no idea Parks and Rec was that bad ratings-wise (although I guess I contribute to that). That's fair enough.
I think it is. I bet a lot of non-Americans couldn't even tell you who Paul Rudd is, but they'd know Benedict Cumberbatch.
Paul Rudd is pretty famous, but Sherlock is just so massive around the world, I think it is like comparing Lebron James and Lionel Messi. Yeh most Americans would pick out Lebron and probably not many Messi but for the rest of the world it is the opposite.
I think overseas this could really be huge, especially if Sherlocks chinese fanbase keeps growing and those fans then get interested in seeing this film.

I think it's more like comparing tennis players James Blake with Andy Murray. One was known to American audiences because he was an American player, but the other is more known by the rest of the world.
I just saw this picture of Will Ferrell and he looked eerily like a fatter Cumberbatch. They got the same eyes, dude.

Cumberbatch is more known and loved by the rest of the world than Paul Rudd. I bet more people know his name than Rudd, who is in fact more of a niche than Cumberbatch.
I think that settles it: Curly Fu*, loved in China and India, that might be a slightly bigger fan base than the rest of the MCU stars togetherA LOT more.
Here in India everybody has watched Sherlock and loves Cumberbatch, but very few know the name of Paul Rudd
Paul Rudd is a big star in the UK. Basically, if you're a big star in American movies and your name is not Tyler Perry, your popularity has also translated over to audiences on this side of the Atlantic.
I don't know if I would call Paul Rudd a big star in the UK. I would say he is about mid-level. Rudd has some recognition but he isn't a household name.
Rudd will finally get his chance to shine in a tentpole for Ant-Man.
I always found it funny when people said Cumberbatch is overexposed, but people don't consider 2 things:
1. He's only been in 2 tentpole franchises (and one of them he didn't physically show in).
2. He's never been the lead in a tentpole.
He's in a popular TV Show, and has done a bunch of smaller movies, but that's it. Cumberbatch represents more of an organic rise to stardom as opposed to what Hollywood did with Taylor Kitsch and Alex Pettyfer.
