personally there are quite a few decent ones out there, Cronos by Guillermo Del toro is a damn good feature debut.

Although 'Amorros Perros' by Alejandro gonzalez inarritu springs to mind as the best, thoughts anyone?

Hmm well interesting question, Neill Blomkamp never was able to direct Halo but i believe if he had directed it, it would have been a hell of a debut. He did a short called Alive in Joburg which was an excellent piece of work and i think he could have done great things with the Halo subject matter.

Otherwise, Christopher Nolan had a great debut with The Following, or if you don't count The Following as a feature lengthed film then his debut would be Memento which was equally excellent.

Edit: heres the film by Blomkamp if anyones interested http://youtube.com/watch?v=dLPb2QiybHo

i have a copy of the following on the way, it's def a feature, as the official classification is anything over 60 mins

Yah its feature length, some people consider his debut Memento though. But The Following is great, it's dark and was great especially for its low budget.

I'm more interested in seeing it than his other works because of the way in which he made it

The Maltese Falcon.

christian Volckman with - 'Renaissance'

One of the films of the year!

Are we talking feature films only? Because that greatly changes things. A bunch of guys put out crappy short films and then great feature debuts, and vice versa.

what about tv show directors to feature films?

Edgar wright :)

Tim Burton-->Pee Wee's Big Adventure

:o

Hmmmm... I was going to say Clerks(Kevin Smith), but then I thought of something much, much better.

Terry Gilliam: Monty Python & The Holy Grail

Oh come on... I love Evil Dead as much as the next guy, but Clerks is a much more solid(and funny) film. Either way, I changed my pick to Monty Python!

I've gota go with good the good ol Raimi, Campbell special over clerks.

Garfield 2 was "One of the films of the year".

ok, Renaissance was superior in terms of cinematics and narrative than virtually all of the years offerings on the silver screen. Definately a cinematic highlight.

Better?
