I think its Street Fighter.
No matter how many times I put Street Fighter Alpah 3 down, I ALWAYS come back to it.

The Street Fighter franchise is the best, as far as I'm concerned. It's the only franchise that seems to hold up over time. I can never go back and play an old Mortal Kombat game, or the first few Tekkens, but I can always enjoy a good couple of rounds of Street Fighter 2. Or any of the Alpha games, for that matter.

If it's deep, hardcore chop socky action you're going after, nothing beats Virtua Fighter 4 Evo. Period.

BUT, if you want a fighting game franchise that is not only flashy, stylish and accessible, but also has enough depth to not turn away enthusiasts, then look no further than the Soul Calibur series - which is my final vote.

Virtua Fighter gets my vote, closely followed by Tekken. I play Tekken more, largely because it's fifth iteration is more recent, and generally a bit more fun, but Virtua Fighter is the better game.

Soul Calibur I find a bit lifeless, and Mortal Kombat is a pathetic excuse for a fighter. I'm not a fan of 2D fighters, so that rules all those out. Including the ones that look 3D, but fight 2D style.

Bloody Roar I have a place in my heart for, but will gladly accept it really can't compete with most other fighters.

capcom versus SNK 2 and marvel versus capcom 2 are the best fighting games out there IMO.

i would love love love to see a marvel versus DC and capcom like in those mugen games officially come out.
