Both refered to as the world's best but there can only be one.

Is this a real question?

Best detective? The goddamn Batman!

Period.

I'd say Sherlock Holmes. Batman has good equipment advantage with modern technology but i loved the Brave and Bold episode where Batman time travels to London and fights crime with Holmes. :) Holmes was the better detective in the episode but Batman the superiour fighter and whatnot.

Agreed, I've yet to see a medium in which Batman actually DOES any proper detecting in a considerable detail actually. In the comics and BTAS he just fed information into the computer, the so-called detectvibe stories like The Long Halloween have him not finding anything out the whole story. The modern trend in Batman stories is now also to simply have the character beatup underworld figures and have them release the information. Writers can be lazy I guess. Batman is as much the greatest detective as he is a pink rabbit. And if he is the world's greatest detective then the DC universe is in a sorry state, because there are far too few stories in which he does do any clever detective work.

And don't even get me started on TDK's bullet recreation scene, good grief that still makes me cringe.

A massive contrast to a proper detective like Sherlocke Holmes, who may have noticed things that were almost unbelievably miniscule at times, but then that supports him further in the role.

I liked Morrison's Bruce Batman with his detective stuff. Such as the card he was given... was it 8A? So the 8 being the 8th letter in the alphabet made the card give the message: Ha Ha Ha Ha. :D That stuff is awesome! :D

I also loved Dini's Riddler arc where Batman, Detective Chimp and Riddler we're in a chatroom discussing the detective stuff together. Great way to show some modern ways of finding out clues. ;) :)

Good points true. I think my gripe is that for someone who is meant to be the "world's greatest detective", if he had no modern technology Holmes would curbstomp him in terms of detecting, while Batman would be left bashing people for info since he's so used to - as your example shows - his enemies outright leaving clues for him, as opposed to solving more typical mysteries.

Doesn't take away the fun of Batman for me at all, part of the recent Brave and the Bold's charm is how Batman picks up on anything. ANYTHING. But really, I prefer to think of bats as one of the best in the world in many things such as detective work, martial arts, technical prowess etc, but is beaten by people who are experts mainly in that specific field, such as Question in detecting and Shiva in martial arts and Luthor in technology.

Hmm, so you are saying batman is a jack of all trades master of none?

Sort of, more like master of trades best of none though. There's someone out there for each of his abilities that exceed his skills considerably, but none of them hav e a combination of those different skills like his.

There was a commercial for the new SH film I saw last week which started with the words "The world's greatest detective" or something, and my head popped up to look at the TV because I thought it would be about Batman.

Elongated Man. If I remember even Batman has said hes a better detective.

I dunno. Batman is pretty detective-like. He's constantly taking samples back to the lab, having some explaination for everything going on. I agree that there are different versions of batman, not all of which expressing his detective skills. But there are pleanty of comics that show off his detective skills. Maybe your not reading the right comics

They both lose.. THE SHADOW wins!

muahhahahahaha.. The Shadow knows!

batman of course!!:woot:

but sherlock had only normal murderer and villains.

batman has to fight against supergansters who are much more dangerous!

Except Holmes archenemy was Professor Moriarty a criminal mastermind nicknamed the Napoleon of crime.

Holmes is the better detective with his powers of observation, logic and deduction but this being a superhero forum and Batman often these days being written as the master of every discipline and magic prep time ability to solve any problem he will win.

"Batman is 2nd only to Sherlock Holmes", I agree with that!
