Both BvS and The Dark Knight Rises took large elements of The Dark Knight Returns while not being direct adaptations.

Which film do you think incorporated the material better?

I'm struggling to think of what The Dark Knight Rises shared with The Dark Knight Returns, apart from the fact that both deal with Batman coming out of retirement. Rises was more No Man's Land meets The Cult.

Very easily BvS for me, although both have some great homages (obviously BvS more so) but the scene in Rises when Batman returns and they play homage to that rookie cop seeing him for the first time with the senior officer is probably my favourite scene in the whole Nolan trilogy.

Batpod.

Bliss.

- Retired older, battle worn Batman returning
- The scene I mentioned above with the two cops, one a rookie and one a veteran officer
- Bane himself is a little reminiscent of the Mutant leader
- Batman's magic knee brace is very similar to the Dark Knight Returns enhancement that Bruce wears on his arm

I agree though there is far more the Cult and No Man's Land. Also plenty of Knightfall.

It really is, I've been critical of Rises in the past (have come to appreciate it more though, although its not without his flaws) but that scene has always gotten me. If I were to do a top ten Batman movie moments that would be up there at the top end.

Well, The Dark Knight Rises is about The Dark Knight returning, whereas in BVS he never actually left. So in terms of overall concepts, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES does that better.

But in terms of actually drawing conceptually and visually from the source material, BVS hands down.

the use of the Robin suit, an older, broken and weary and more violent Bruce, antagonism with Superman...it just has a bit more actually in common.

I think that's a very fair assessment. I love both movies aswell so I feel a winner :woot:

Plus in BVS, Gotham was still crime-ridden, the Bat-Signal wasn't broken...Thomas Wayne has a mustache...

Rises? Batman retired for a decade, sports some facial hair, aching to come back to the cowl. Comes out of retirement. First scene back takes a LOT from Returns including a line from a cop that almost word for word. First mission is to go after a hulking threat who leads an army. Loses the first fight. Wins the second fight. Knee-brace, inspired by the arm-brace. Both movies include an unconventional Robin that never appeared in the comics beforehand. Batman fakes his death at the end, different outcome but same premise.

BvS? Older Batman, has a long past of fighting crime (for decades). Sketchy past with a version of Robin. The two bat-suits, bat-symbol, short eats on the cowl. Battles Superman with kryptonite in the mecha-suit. Instead of Bruce lying in the ground at a funeral, with Superman at the site...Bats turns out not be dead....we get Clark lying in the ground and Bruce is at the funeral. It ends with Superman being alive. What else? Some folks on the news talking about Superman, if he should be doing what he's doing or not. Which is a reversal of Batman in DKR. Loose inspiration though. Then there's zombie Superman.

I would say they both did a good job with taking scenes from the book, using it in the movie, or flipping a scenario on its head for the film version. But im going to side with Rises for now because even though Affleck was older, grizzled, and incredibly negative all the time + fighting Supes...i think the context of the big fight is very different and Miller's Batman didn't kill. Not for enjoyment like Batfleck either. I think this universe will take more influence from Returns when more movies come out but Dawn of Justice wasn't more accurate to the comic than Rises. I can somewhat agree if people say it's even. I just think Nolan took more from the graphic novel than Snyder, and at least made sure Bats didn't break his moral code. As violent as Miller's Bats was, he kept his honor in ways.

Both movies took different parts. Rises took things from the first half of the story and the ending. BvS took from the concept of an older Bruce who attempts to take down Superman.

I think Bane has definite similarities to the Mutant Leader

Bane was the comic Bane mixed with the Mutant Leader. Then tossed into The Cult, replacing Deacon Blackfire.

Ooh yeah you're right.

Nice post up the oage to mate

I'll go so far as to say BvS is better than The Dark Knight Returns.

It made me like the book even more, I've always had problems with the Dark Knight Returns (mostly when it comes to Superman, even though I've come to terms with that version) but I can over look it's flaws even more now. BvS did an amazing job of bringing it to the screen without been a direct adaptation.

I hate Frank Miller and I hate his writing and I hate how TDKR gets Superman SO wrong but of the two in this debate, I'm thinking Snyder draws on more than Nolan did with Rises and executes it better as well.

The Dark Knight Rises was a better film.

Batman v Superman probably incorporated the material better. Miller ruins Superman in Dark Knight Returns. Snyder ruins Superman in Batman v Superman.

I'm still amazed we got a version of this in BvS (screen cap from the animated adaptation)

Say what you will about Miller's depiction of Superman in the Dark Knight Returns but it sure has some amazing Superman imagery in that book.

How did I forget about this from TDKR?

BVS, definitely. Simply incorporates more of the source and in a reasonable context.

Also Batman faking his death.
