Just read the first issue...

I'm a little stunned. :(

Being that I JUST picked it up because Spider-Man was in it, I guess I WON'T be getting the rest of this mini. In fact... overall I'm just mad I wasted the $2.99 and 15 minutes of my life...

But, I'm sure some of you all will have broader interests... And I'll peek in here now and then to see if all is not as it "appears"...
Namely, to see if Spider-Man is REALLY dead, or not.

BEYOND! # 1

Can Spider-Man, Gravity, Venom, Henry Pym, The Wasp, Medusa, Kraven, Firebird and the Hood keep from killing each other before they have to face the dangers of their destination, the deadly artificial planet known as Battleworld?

I was intrigued... till the END. Then I was just irritated.

EVEN IF all is not as it seems...
I've REALLY had it up to here *holds hand WAY over head* with Spider-Man DYING.
Just don't see how this adversion can be overcome... even if... whatever....

u guys do make me laugh sometimes. read the original series of secret wars if you really wana know. i mean, EVERYBODY died then and were brought back by various means. We are talking about someone who's possibly the beyonder i.e. infinte power.

The issue was brillaint, its getting good reviews on the bought/ thought thread and i think you're being harsh. It had good art, a good angle to tell it through a relative unknown and they built spider-man up just to knock him down. brillaint :) Did you see the surprise on venom-gargan's face? classic. Don't know if i'll buy all the comics cos i'm considering just buying the trade. that way i can read it again and again and again.....

If it gets rave reviews HERE (trial by fire) I might pick it up in paperback...

But seriously -- how many times can Spider-Man bite it in a handfull of months!?

My review...

Beyond #1: This was pure gold to me. While I know very little of Gravity (other than he's Marvel's version of Invincible), the story is partial told in his narrative. After a quick battle with Brushfire, Gravity goes to check out the "big thing" in Central Park, which old readers will feel like it's 1984 all over again as I quickly recognized it as the arenas that took the Marvel heroes and villains to the Beyonder World back in Secret Wars. Once plucked (and revives from passing out), Gravity finds himself in deep space with Spider-Man, Mac Gargan Venom, Hank Pym, the Wasp, the Hood, Kraven the Hunter Jr., Firebird & Medusa. And it was nice of the Wasp to reference the "similar incident" that happened years ago. I like continuity and it appears to have not disappeared with the telling of this tale. Anyhoo, after a few scafuffles, a great voice screams "I AM FROM BEYOND!!! SLAY YOUR ENEMIES AND ALL YOU DESIRE SHALL BE YOURS! NOTHING YOU DREAM OF IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO ACCOMPLISH!!" The Hood seems to want to kill everyone, but then suggests he was kidding when he's quickly dismantled, but Gargan flips and goes after Spidey. Spider-Man gets him on the ground and tells him to cool off (as they have danced the dance many times as Spidey/Sorpion). But then Venom looks up and plunges a scorpion tale through Spidey's chest. Medusa runs to his aid, and Spidey tells her he loves her, obviously thinking she's Mary Jane. And then he apparantly dies in her arms. Venom screams to the skies "You hear that Beyonder? I slew my enemy! Give me what I deserve!!!"... to which Medusa, filled with rage, turns to Venom telling him he's going to get EXACTLY what he deserves.

To be continued...

The art was decent and above average. Kollins undeservedly receives bad flak for his style, but it really suits the earlt tone of this book. The writing flows nicely, though a bit choppy for a first issue with 9 characters in it. I know that what occurs in the book can't possibly be true, but it was still a great cliff-hanger that should grab you by the balls and wanting to read #2. This could be Marvel's sleeper hit of the year, and very appealing to Marvel readers in the 80's. Highly recommended.

Cheers...

I remember just flutering through some of Beyond's preview art a couple of months ago and seeing a penciled page
Where Spidey is impaled by Venom's tail
, I chuckled and sarcastically thought to myself "thats gotta hurt" than a couple of months later, I'm reading the solicits for Beyond!, and hearing about a shocking death of a certain hero, I was like uhhhhhhhh........

It was a decent read however, I just don't really care that much about the supporting cast, other than Gravity, and Spidey, I kinda could give a rats ass, what happens to Ant Man, or the son of Kraven

wasnt gravitys name graviton a while ago or was that someone else???

As jaded as I am with comics nowadays, I surprisingly didn't think it was bad, and actually enjoyed it. Obviously Spidey isn't really dead, I'm thinking the "one from beyond" made his death happen to instigate a battle between them, which apparently worked. Just a theory anyways.

Like I said... I enjoyed it up to the end.

But I was interested in this because of Spider-Man. I want him to be PART of the game, not knocked out in the beginning. Seriously... how big is his part in this going to be NOW?

I wasn't planning on buying it before, and I'm definitely not planning on buying it now. Just have zero interest in it.

As mentioned above; in the original Secret Wars, every hero was killed off. I think Wasp was the first one, iirc...however, infinite power and alien technology brought each of them back.

I loved it. I think it's great seeing some B Listers take center stage for a change. Including the villains. Looking forward to Medusa vs Gargan next issue.

What continity is this in?

When does this take place?

I'm assuming this takes place before the Civil War stuff because Spidey in in his classic costume, not the Iron Spidey suit

So did anyone read #2?

I thought it was hysterical how easily Medusa made Gargan her biatch, lol.

Discuss.

I loved it.... even better than issue #1.

Solid classic Marvel super-hero telling with some nice continuity touches.

Brilliant

Every super-hero comic book fan should be reading this mini.

Aloha,
Greatly enjoyed #1. My subscriptions come late so you guys are always ahead of me with comments. Here's one challenge for Marvel. The old timers who could immediately relate to Secret War continuity were able to relate to this story, much easier than some of the newer fans. This gives Marvel a reason not to stress 20,30 or 40 year old continuity. Be that as it may-good story telling is good story telling whether you know anything about the background history or not.

Jeez, how the heck did that happen? She shouldn't even be able to take on the Venom Symbiote, much less the already superpowered villian wearing the suit.... and what was her power again? She controlled her hair?

Man, hopefully Eddie gets the symbiote back soon.....

I think it's an interesting story. My only question is...does it take place during or after Civil War, or is it out of continuity altogether? There hasn't been any clear answer there.

My best guess would obviously be between MK: Spider-Man #12 and Civil War...

... though if what I hear on the Internet is true, it could be during and/or afterwards.

:)
