I liked the coincidence. But the timing was all wrong. When batman first reveals himself, he goes out and says this. The "humour" in both Nolan films absolutely sucks.
"Nice coat"
This wasnt supposed to be humour. Its supposed to show how extraordinary batman and his tank really are. Wouldnt those guys be buffled in real life?"At least tell me what it looks like" - "Nevermind"
"A black...tank!"
This isnt humour either. Batman could either give them a big lecture explaining their differences or use one sentence. He chose the latter. It wasnt the best line of the movie, but Batman showed them that they clearly werent qualified for the job."I'm not wearing hockey pads"
This is supposed to explain Bruce disappearing from the party. Instead of having nerds raging on the internet over how nobody suspected Bruce of being Batman, Nolan gave us that scene to explain how the other people took it."Is that a panic room?"
Not a very natural thing to say after falling down from a skyscraper but not humorous either. Clearly you dont know what humour is."Let's not do that again"
That was intended to show the adrenaline and feelings of the participants when their best weapon was neutralised. Bad line but again, i dont think that Nolan was going for humor."Oh, that's not good!"
Again these are normal people taken by surprise by the extraordinary superhero. You need scenes like that. People staring with their mouths open at Superman who is lifting a car... Otherwise, the whole thing passes as ordinary. Granted, Nolan could have people looking amazed or running for cover, and yes the kids shooting at the cars was bad, but some comic relief isnt so bad. I liked the car park guard in BB who checked his coffee after the batmobile zoomed by.Not to mention the terrible visual "humour".
Close up of man drinking coffee and showing his reaction - in BB and in TDK
Man adjusts mirror - Batman swipes it off
Agreed, that was cheesy.Kids shooting imaginary guns in backseat of car

All in all, lighten up!
Ummm they WERE attempts at humour and trying to state otherwise is kind of ridiculous but whatever. I mean, are you seriously trying to tell us all what the writers were going for when they wrote those lines?
I love the film and I think everyone else in here does too. I believe that, had these lame parts been taken out, it would have been that much better.
The problem with these specific parts in both TDK and BB is that they are not just failed humour attempts but a-lot of them are cringeworthy. It sucks that such great films have to be subject to cringe inducing lines or moments. There's obviously not enough of them to even come close to ruining the movies but they do stick out.
Nope, you are wrong.
Some of the lines were intended as humour but not ALL. As I originally stated and Mr Earle stated again, some of the lines like "I'm not wearing hockey pads" was not intentionally supposed to make people bust a gut laughing. I'll repeat myself from my previous post and say it was intended as a line for Batman telling those copycats that they don't have the experience or the right equipment. In short, to back the F off and leave the cleaning up of Gotham to him.
Okay, let me start off by saying I'm one of the people who has never been that bothered by the humor in Nolan's movies. (The swat guy was probably the most annoying to me.)
However, man...you're just overthinking this one. The hockey pads line was definitely humor. Yes, it was Batman making a point, but he was doing it in a humorous way. It's called sarcasm. No, it's not supposed to make you bust a gut and roll in the aisles, but it was supposed to make you chuckle.
However, I'm really surprised people are citing that as cringe worthy. I thought the line was fine.

As cheesy and lame as the SWAT guys dialogue was in the chase scene most of it was also not intended as comedy. It was a sense of worry, frustration and/or panic. It just was acted very badly, not to mention the dialogue itself is something I don't think you would hear a tough SWAT or riot police member say.
At the end of the day I'll just say what others have said in the past. Nolan may be one of my favorite recent directors but that doesn't stop me from seeing his faults. One of which is horrible casting and directing of his lame extras/side characters. The sad thing is it mainly only appears in his Batman films.
So, again, I'll ask you....If I am so wrong, Are you speaking through the minds of the writers when you claim to know what they intended when they wrote those lines? Are you that in touch with writing and tone while the rest of us struggle to understand comedy and what is supposed to be considered funny?
Myself as well as a number of others have what's called common sense. We know what context is and how to tell when the way a line is said in a certain scene how it was meant to be perceived.
I love when people write thier opinion as fact and tell people they are wrong. I'm glad that the rest of us are all confused about how we percieved the lines and you understand the writers intentions perfectly. You are so above us. (Oh and that's sarcasm btw)
Ummm they WERE attempts at humour and trying to state otherwise is kind of ridiculous but whatever. I mean, are you seriously trying to tell us all what the writers were going for when they wrote those lines?
Which you did earlier...
I don't think I'm above anyone, stop being a sensitive cry baby. I was just defending someone's opinion that I fully agree with, especially after you stated something as fact to them, which was about anyone who disagrees with that opinion of yours is "ridiculous".
I'm also not a moron and can understand sarcasm, that's your sensitive and wrong opinion that I'm arrogant and think I as well as my opinions are better than others. You're way off in your assumptions, I loathe arrogance.
I'm done with this argument.
So, in loathing arrogance, you use it yourself to make a point? Yeah....that's intelligent.
Once again I'm not at all arrogant so keep making stuff up about me.
The only reason you're done with this argument is because you know you can't win it and because you have no argument to make. Most of us in here like the movie but trying to convince everybody that they are wrong about the funny bits in the movie. That they weren't intended as funny bits or that it was more sarcasm than full on humour....well, that's just sounding like a crybaby fanboy.
I like how you started this argument by repying to me directly and now you are backing off from the debate you started. That speaks volumes.
No, I'm ending the argument because it's just going to go on and on. I'm not scared or intimidated by you or your points in the slightest.
As for the "funny bits", not all of them do I disagree with you and others on. The main one I do disagree on is the hockey pads line.
You are really stretching with calling me a "crybaby fanboy" which came out of nowhere and doesn't even make sense in regards to my opinion in my previous post.
Once again I only ended the argument because it's just going to go on and on since we don't fully agree on the matter and are not going to change each other's opinions. If you really think it's because I'm intimidated or because "I have no argument to make" you need to grow up and learn how to argue without full on insulting someone.
Nothing to be sorry for, you actually got the quote wrong, i'ts
hockey pads.![]()
Yes, thank you.I'm pretty sure he was making fun of the old debates as to which one it was when the movie came out.
Nope, you are wrong.

I agree with you on all your points.I thought the hockeypads line was also fine. To be honest the only lines or characters that I didn't care for in both Batman films was the bum, "nice ride", the water utilities guy, "if that train comes near the tower, the whole thing is gonna blow!" and the SWAT guy during the chase.
I don't think I'm overthinking the hockeypads line at all. I get that it was said with a bit of sarcasm but it wasn't humerous enough to be really considered full on humour but had a more serious tone to it. I don't doubt that some people might have chuckled but I rarely heard that in the 10 times I saw that film in the theatre.
I'm disappointed that Batman fights like a drunk uncle dancing at a wedding.
