Birds of Prey Birds of Prey General Discussion and Speculation

I don't get it. In the comics, these women's costumes change frequently. This movie just presents another version of that, and even then their looks obviously take inspiration from the comics.

Anyway, I am only liking this movie the more of it I see. The cast and crew seem like such a cohesive and joyful group, and the film itself looks fun and unique, yet still a superhero story on a more grounded level, as Gotham stuff tends to be anyway.

It looks like a blast!
Agreed!

Im getting more and more hyped by everything i've seen so far. This is not gonna be another suicide squad

Again how can people complain about not getting traditional costumes when they haven’t even seen the movie? Lol, as far as I know, people who have seen possibly the trailer are saying we will see traditional costumes for at least one team member...

And Barbara was not allowed to be in this film for the same reason Penguin was scraped from this movie...so Babs will actually be in the Batman proper and get her solo film....but then we will need to b**** about her color and costumes right?

Yeah, this movie serves as an introduction to Huntress and Black Canary, it is an origin movie for them. They are still not full fledged Crime fighters, so it makes sense why they are not seen in their comic-book accurate costumes in this.

Yeah we have to thank Matt Reeves for that. :o

Matt Reeves (and WB) have split Batman characters into two groups, the one that are appearing in his movie wouldn't be allowed to appear in DCEU, so no Catwoman, Batgirl, Riddler and Penguin for DCEU.

Ya and hard to tell if they can’t use the characters he is using because WB doesn’t want 2 versions running at the same time, or they are all in the same universe therefore Reeves gets the ones he wants first.

Before people complain about RP is standalone in another universe therefore cross over is impossible -

a) it’s comic book movie logic
b) RP vs Margot = $$$$
c) multiverse
d) RP vs Margot = $$$$, that’s studio suits language

BTW, $40 mil. long range tracking is not bad, as it will go up a bit as the movie's release date gets closer, and interest will most certainly rise with the second final trailer. What opening number would be considered good ? I think a $53 mil. opening is good and that's what I expect.

So budget around 60M which would probably end up about 70M after release (usually under reported pre release for some reason) so needs 210M to break even, so 300M would give a nice profit and anything bigger would be a really good win.

So considering SS made more OS than US a 45/55 split might be reasonable so 135M US and 165M OS or more would be a win, so been a movie that will attract female, a ratio of better than 2.5 should be reasonable, 50-55M should be the start they want, it might not even need that high if the female demo can push its legs.

I think it has the potential to get to 90+opening domestically and around 250/350 for a 600M+ finish but the way they are marketing it I think probably a 60M opening for 350M worldwide finish like Shazam is likely

Yeah I think this movie will kill overseas (and do decent here) so I would say it will be fine. My guess is it will do more than Shazam and it wont be close. I would guess $500 million is the floor on the strength of International appeal. If a panned Suicide Squad that was divisive to say the least can make $800 million a decent BOP film that features the most like part of that film (along with other factors) should have zero issue doing decent numbers.

Shazam making $350 was close to what the studio was expecting BOP they want more because of the appeal of Harley so that would be a disappointment even though it would be profitable. That may be capped stateside but abroad it is a completely different beast. Shazam needed to build an audience, BOP doesnt it is bringing an entire fandom with them. (Harley)

I think this is the problem, people assume that the BOP are already crimefighters with official costumes but if you watch/read the interviews with the creative team, they state it's an origin story for the majority of the cast. Jurnee even explains why Dinah isn't a crimefighter yet even though her mom was one.

The costumes have some pretty clear nods to various versions of their comic book costumes. I think that's a decent approach in itself.

SS made 745M and not released in China, advantage for that was Will Smith and Leto as Joker, and a sick marketing run, disadvantage was rottentomatoes, and studio meddling

BOP won't have Will or a Joker, but is not meddled and will see how well received it is. I hope they remember to play up the first ever female team angle, Marvel kinda showed a scene without any real plans lol, DC need to emphasize on that first ever impression, and not repeat a Shazam mistake by showing the same approach, Shazam had the family and horror elements, they forgot about it during marketing, BOP has the girl team element.

They should have called this -

Harley Quinn and Birds of Prey: Origins.

Birds of Prey Begins with Harley Quinn's Emancipation

Thanks to Matt Reeves (and short sighted WB Execs) DCEU's Batman has gone missing.

This movie was spunoff of SS squad that was loosely connected to Snyder's movies not counting the butchered version of Justice League released in theaters. Oher movies like the originally conceived Batman movie starring Affleck it was therefore left to say where the character was at. However, with JL derailing things and being chopped up not to mention how SS was received and chopped up it's clear why this BOP is a soft reboot spunoff of SS similar yet maybe still separate from the upcoming SS sequel that's also a soft reboot.

Still, even being a residually connected film to SS, some of the originally conceived notions no longer to be used I think still linger as an imagined afterthought perhaps... Therefore, Batman's probably out of town with his Justice League counterparts that would've been the plot of Snyder's Justice League 2 doing prep work at this point.

Career wise he was in a similar point as Frank Miller's version just a bit younger and happening to be in a Gotham city bordering Metropolis. The arc of the movies though would've captured him regaining his optimistic heroic qualities through self sacrifice and his demise in Justice League 2 allowing someone else to carry the mantle afterwards.

Of course the movie isn't beholden to this but this sourced notion to Batman being gone I think fits as 1 imagined sourced scenario.

I've long since accepted that this won't be the adaptation of Black Canary I was hoping for, but putting aside her outfit looking nothing like the costumes I know and saying it's not even supposed to be a costume, I don't think it looks good as regular clothes.

Helena looks better, and closer to her traditional look, and I was happy with her Arrow version and saw the opportunity of having her in the movie as more of a bonus than I did with Dinah. I don't like how her outfit looks as much as I did early on, but it's fine, I guess. I can roll with this as another take on Huntress.

I feel like this'll go easier for me if I approach this as a kind of trippy Harley Quinn movie with some other female crimefighters in it and treating anything else I might get out of it as, well, as a bonus, rather than approaching it as an adaptation of Birds of Prey or its characters.

they'll probably have the traditional costumes by the end of the film, hey, maybe Bruce designed it for them, for fans who are dying to see his presence =P

Canary costume will make fans happy but there's gonna be some serious outrage with the fishnet though, lol, unless the director's woman so they'll let this one pass

Robbie: “Tonally, David Ayer’s world looks different to [Birds’] world, which will look different to James’s world," she says. "So, no, there’s not a direct connection. But like the comics, it doesn’t cancel out one or the other.”
"It's very much like the comic books where you pick up in a totally different place, and it doesn't directly link to what happened before," Robbie tells our sister publication Total Film magazine . "But at the same time it's not such a leap that you're like, 'Oh, what's going on?!'"

Margot Robbie teases Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey: "She’s kind of doing the right thing, but she's not a moral person" | GamesRadar+
Margot: “I think Harley borders on a villain and an antihero," she tells our sister publication Total Film magazine for the latest cover. "In darker depictions, she could be playing for the darker side and be a more straight-up villain. In this film, she’s kind of doing the right thing, ultimately. But she's not a moral person. So I consider her more antihero.
