Black Friday thread: Shop Like a Beast!

they usually have lightning deals the week of

and they're known to pricematch a lot of the other deals as they go live from other retailers

After Prime Day, I'm not holding my breath. People fighting over a pencil sharpener.

I'm not much on brick and mortar shopping, but when cyber Monday comes around my OCD has me focused on soccer. I would like a gaming system to play the FIFA women's soccer. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I would recommend looking at Best Buy's website Thanksgiving Day afternoon.

I'll probably post some deals in this thread come Turkey day. With mod permission, of course.

Not doing Black Friday anything, I think they impeded too far on retail workers holiday time with family.

Retailers have special TVs that are designed to look like high-end TVs which they only sell on holidays like Black Friday. At first glance, they look identical to the ones you see throughout the year, but are of inferior quality.

Almost all brands do this now, including high-end ones like Sony, Samsung and Panasonic.

An easy give away is if your 50 inch TV only has 2 HDMI ports. It means they clearly cut corners. But you can also tell by looking up the serial numbers.

That Panasonic you buy on Black Friday may actually be worse than a store-brand TV they sell year round for the same price.

Black Friday is probably the worst time to buy a TV if you don't know much about them. It's when they try to sell the subpar sets, and the derivative models.

You can actually get a good TV, but just be careful.
Meh, to be honest I don't care much for this TV I'm getting. I'll be getting a 4K 60-70" 10-bit screen next summer for the office anyway, so for home viewing I don't care as much.

EDIT: I'm also thinking about he FSI AM550 for my office instead of a 4K 10-bit but we'll see.

Most of the stores in my area are volunteer only on black Friday and workers volunteer because of the over time and extra pay. Also stores like my local target do special things for the employees that work on black Friday. Also, keep in mind that not everyone has family or cares about thanksgiving and rather than staying home sitting on their butts they'd rather do something productive with their time.

I've got friends who work at different retail stores and say they can be fired and it is not optional. They don't even get asked for preference. Every year they have moved up the hours into actual Thanksgiving day :loco:

Sounds like your friends have **** managers.

Seems pretty typical from most of them, a couple work at Target another at JcPenney and other at Walmart. Pretty much getting told it is black out date nobody can take off and if you don't show up on time you are out of a job. One of them said something about going in at like 5pm for setup. EWWWWW on actual Thanksgiving Day!

Can they not find other jobs? Surely another business can match what WAL-MART, Target, and JcPenney is paying them.

You always have to remember for some situations/job markets - it is the only current option they may have. I've heard of people with college degrees that still end up in retail.

I know I live in a small town too but switching to restaurant employment may be a better option if they dislike black Friday retail. Just curious, how old are your friends?

Working on Thanksgiving at a store like that sucks, but it's not without its perks.

I do think they should be given extra pay.

Around like 18-25

I usually prefer the online deals, but I like that the stores are all open during my night owl hours. I sometimes feel sorry for the workers who look exhausted, but BF is usually the only time that I really feel like shopping during the holiday season.

My thing is the midnight time I understand, but when you move it up earlier and earlier that ends up being on Thanksgiving day and isn't cool.

I agree that it isn't the most palatable situation, but its an inevitable part of certain lines of work. Police, nurses, nursing home workers, gas station attendants are but a few of the jobs where working holidays is a regular occurrence. For better or worse, retail stores are going to open when they can make money.

Which are jobs that have emergency related circumstances for the most part. Forcing workers to forego Thanksgiving because those who want to do early shopping........... eh, kind of a different realm to me. Get yo butts at home and use the day to enjoy time with family, and wish everyone that can be at home to be able to.

This. If guaranteed holiday time off is something a person wants then they shouldn't work in some fields. And when you are a teen you should just be thankful you have job. At that time in your life you're too under qualified and too inexperienced in working and life to be *****ing about having to work.

Frankly, if you have to work, just deal with it. It sucks, but it's life. Besides, it's not like thanksgiving can only be enjoyed in the evening. If you have to be at work at 5pm do thanksgiving lunch. If you can't it's unfortunate, but life doesn't stop for arbitrary pig out days. And it's not like you need to spend all day and all night celebrating thanksgiving. Eat your turkey or ham spend a few hours with the family and then go to work and make some money.

I could understand being upset about having to work if you have kids or are the one who does all the cooking, but when you are a teen how vital are you in the preparation of Thanksgiving meals? And if it's about spending time with family, well, you've got 364 other days of the year to talk to and spend time with family.

Personally I think we need to throw Thanksgiving out the window entirely. It's nothing more than an excuse to gorge ourselves on food, and destroy plumbing with insane bowel movements. It's pretty disgusting when you stop and think about it. Don't get me wrong I love a good meal, but I don't think we should make a holiday out of overeating and American Football. And that's all Thanksgiving is now. Shoveling way too much food in our gullets and Football. Why should the world or America stop for that?
