Black Myth Wukong

I'm having hard time frankly understanding why exactly. This game looks like just another one of these. Maybe it's a me problem lol
I think it can be resumed to this being the first(?) AAA-quality Chinese game. Add to that, it is based on a very popular Chinese folktale.

The majority of the players (close to 90% according to a chart I saw) are from China.

That actually makes sense.

Finally got to play this (I am at chapter 2 right now)..and I gotta say the opening segment perhaps is one of the best opening in any of the games I've played.

And also, given the source of the story, I think this is the kind of game that got more attention and popular for Asian gamers than in the West.

"The Journey to the West" or ("Saiyūki" in Japanese) is very influential in Asia (especially in East Asia). It is the most popular literature in East Asia as the folklore shared so many cultural heritage among many. Here in Japan particular, the lore is very huge that it spanned multiple TV Shows and movie and famously becoming inspiration for Dragon Ball creation by Akira Toriyama-sensei. (No, Goku wasn't inspired by Superman like some of westerner fans claimed!... Everyone in Asia know Goku is first and foremost inspired by Sun Wu Kong before anyone else. The name itself is literally the same...悟空 (Wu Kong is Chinese saying of Goku, and Goku is Japanese saying of Wu Kong).

So that is why the premise of playing WuKong (or Goku in Japanese saying) based on the story from the classic Saiyūki novel is very intriguing and exciting for many of us.

And as a Buddhist myself...it is exciting and also surreal at the same time, to know that one of the Final boss will be the Four Great Heavenly Kings (Shidaiten'nō) that I've always pray to, whenever I go to the temple and shrines😁 (and one that I must defeat in the game when I eventually get to the final stages😆)

i haven't played the game, but i been watching the gameplay and cut scenes on youtube, and it looks great.

it's like a sequel to the novel.
the creators of the game really brought the world of The Journey to the West to life.

those giant yaoguai (yokai) look insane!

The game is really a visual feast and insanely beautiful!

And yess.. the story takes place after Wu Kong and co. finished the holy task escorting Sanzō hōshi/Tang Sanzang of delivering Buddhist scriptures from the west(India)...and what happens next in the story of this game is the love letter and homage to the original tale, up to the 81 bosses levels...the homage to the 81 ordeals that Wu Kong/Goku and the Sanzō groups must overcome in the classic lore.

yes, i'm seeing many callbacks to the original tale in the cinematic scenes here!

if they do more add-ons or a sequel to the game, they should add underwater levels, and let the player control Zhu Ba Jie (Pig) or Sha Wu Jing (Sand Monk), since one of Wukong's weaknesses is water.

Ba Jie and Wu Jing can go under water like aquaman and fight those ocean yokai! :whoops:
Wu Jing would look so badass - a 10 ft tall red-haired blue water demon!
Does he show up in Black Myth? I haven't seen any mention of him.

They should have Sanzo make a cameo appearance, since he is a buddha now, and have him cry a lot again, just like in the novel

No, Gojō/Wu Jing doesn't appear in the game as far as I am playing at the moment, and just found out that he and Sanzo are completely absent from the game, though there is little nods and references to both.

I hope if there is a DLC, then they definitely should make Gojō and Sanzo available, either as NPC or playable character, hehe

Btw, love your profile pic😁, though I never watch that version, I only watch the 2006 version with Shingo Katori as Goku😅 (the show was so popular and big when it aired here back in the day) and the classic 1986 version of the chinese show (that many says this particular version is the definitive "Journey to the West/Saiyūki)

Fun Fact:
the actor who played Goku in the classic 70s version (the one in your avvy), he was playing Gautama Buddha in the 2006 version😁

thanks! my profile pic is actually Stephen Chow as Goku from the 1995 hong kong 2-part movie - A Chinese Odyssey.

it's both an absurdist spoof and deconstruction of JttW...where it places Goku on this side quest where he gets reincarnated as a human and has to find his way back.

it's got that classic HK slapstick comedy and the what if scenario of Goku now having human desires and trying to reconcile that with his destiny.

it's probably one of my favorite Stephen Chow films!

the 1986 chinese show is dated now due to the limited budget and old special fx , but to this day is still the closest adaption to the source material.

the 2006 series with Shingo Katori looks fun too! :like:
i just saw that the whole thing is up on youtube, i should check it out :whoops:

Ohh...my bad then🤣
Thought that was from the 70s Japanese version tv show! Lol hahaha😅

I havent seen many of Stephen Chow's movies except maybe for just a few specific and most popular ones (like Kungfu Hustle, King of Beggar, and Shaolin Soccer😁), but I think I should check Chinese Odyssey, hehe...thank you!

the 2006 show is a broad, largely comedic fun show with some nice lessons about working together and acceptance. Nevertheless, there are some surprisingly strong emotional beats along the way. Not the best nor the most faithful JttW adaption ever, but I think its worth seeking out😁
