Black student forced to participate in slavery reenactment

We had a similar experiment in the 5th grade. The teacher decided to have us re-enact a slave auction; I was one of the slaves and remember my bio card as freshly as when I first saw it: "Your name is Sam. You are happy to have been taken out of the jungle and from your savagery." And we had to act the part that was prescribed to us: we had to wait on the "masters" who bought us. Mine ordered me to take her dishes to the garbage can and I refused. She threw a tantrum and I had to deal with my classmates' insults, but, I refused to do it.

God, I hate my grade school.

lucky. they censored out slavery in my grade school (Illinois). instead they made me and two hispanic kids play "cannibalistic commanche injuns" a little before Thanksgiving. it was to teach us all that the early settlers to america had all sorts of obstacles to overcome.

I just can't believe in this day and age that the people that run that place sat down and said "You know what, this is a great idea on how to teach kids about slavery!" and patted themselves on their back for a job well done

Nope, Pennsylvania.

Maybe these peoples hearts were in the right place, maybe not. All I can say is that having lived in PA. from 1991-2000, Carville's quote about the state is not far off from reality. "There's Pittsburgh to west, Philly in the east and it's Alabama in between."

Perhaps being complimented on my "english" and manners through out high school and being mistaken for a Mexican exchange student my first day in, both because of my obviously Spanish first, middle and last names, is coloring things a bit from my perspective.

Unfortunately, there are significant number of control freak idiots and rejects in the public educational system.....need to exercise their power over the defenseless to feel better about themselves.

Having spent nine years in Parochial School (Catholic School, so of course, now I'm an atheist) I can tell you that control freaks, idiots and rejects are as plentiful there as EVERYWHERE ELSE in the world. I had to actually go and pick up a cousin of mine who went to the same school I did when I was 13 and he was 8 and clean him off and bring him clean clothes because a Nun did not want let him go to the bathroom, I think some kids had been acting up and roaming the halls. Fair enough. But the end result was my cousin not being allowed to go to the bathroom, he loses it, soils (number 2 in the pants) himself and I have to go and pick him up and clean him off. To say he was embarrassed would be an understatement. Why a teacher/Nun would let anything get that far or not know the difference between a kid who is screwing around and one that is about to have an accident is beyond my mental strength.

Which probably promotes that type of activity throughout the school year. What's to stop bullies from "playing slave master" during recess. I remember after the rodney king beating kids at school would jump others and scream "Rodney".
Which brings up something I've read recently that indicates anti-bullying measures in schools might actually increase bullying as they learn how to be more effective at it. Now imagine them taking something like this and applying it to their arsenal of malignancy.

We didn't have to reenact any past historical events when I was in school. I don't have to put myself in others shoes to understand the horrors of some historical events or feel empathy for people in those situations.

I don't find this too shocking as during school, not only did I once have to reenact a slave auction, but I had to reenact the "processing" of Jews arriving at a concentration camp.

Some got gased and burned.

So yeah. Having experienced something similar, I'm not surprised. Though, I do live in VA.

Either way, its pretty ****ed up.

While I don't actually have a problem with the general idea of this, they took it way too far. A lot of people can just gloss over what slavery was like (to either extremes), and actually living it for a short time could be very educational, but I don't like how this was done. And every student and student's parents should have been made well aware of what to expect before even going on the trip. Permission slips to participate should have been signed.

Yeah I never had to do anything like this either, granted I went to school in New York so maybe that's why.

I went to a little school in Ohio with tons of racists and we never did anything like this...

You guys ever read that short story The Lottery? I remember we acted it out in school and threw paper balls at the "winner".

What sort of schools did you people go to?
I was just about to ask the same thing! Between this and the Texas school board that wants to pretend slaves were "unpaid interns" I have very little hope for this country's race relations. So sad.

Ah, America. Our differences are a double edged sword.

See, this is what happens when Roots stops airing on TV every year like clockwork.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH! for real though! just play that once in awhile and you get all the lesson you Ever need to know!

This re-enactment CRAP IS CRAZEEE!!

Are people sure they were in history class and not drama class with all this acting out stuff? :o

We went to Belgium to look at some old WW1 trenches and tunnels in history class. The teachers never said "ok kids now get in these trenches and act out murdering each other as it will help you understand the horrors of the first world war"
