I ended up liking Only God Forgives but only after the fact. Like is a strong word, but I guess I had a better appreciation.

I loved the cinematography and the music was beautiful but damn the script and Gosling's 'performance' were so bad

I thought he was meant to be stupid. A spineless stupid man who lacks confidence and who may have a mental disorder. That's why his stares lack the intensity of the stares he gave out in Drive, since the Driver is a much more confident and heroic character.

But Only God Forgive's use of subtext is so thin and weird so it's hard to tell.

Yeah I don't think that his character in OGF was meant to be "strong." And when you meet his mother, well it's not hard to see why.

But yeah, the film's use of subtext and symbolism is so all over the place that it's hard to tell for sure.

One was good and backed by well thought out character and decent albeit minimalist script.

The other was this:

LOL. I remember cracking up so hard during this scene (and about a dozen others in that horrible movie). Only God Forgives may be the most unintentionally hilarious movie I've ever seen. I hope that Joel and the Bots take it on when they bring back MST3K.

Here's the first official synopsis: Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
"a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos"

That there's more Replicant's running around than they were led to believe maybe? Maybe high powered people are Replican'ts?

Gosling is capable of giving great performances (Half Nelson, The Believer, Blue Valentine) he just needs good direction. Like harlequinade said, no "Only God Forgives" Gosling.

Probably something like the rich and powerful were replaced by next generation Replicants who aren't limited by the four year life span.

In the first Blade Runner Eldon Tyrell it was originally intended that the Tyrell murdered by Batty would be revealed to be a replicant, and as a result Batty would head up to the next floor, where he would discover the real Tyrell in cryogenic suspension. Sebastian would then explain that a incurable disease struck Tyrell, who had himself frozen until a cure is found. Subsequently Batty would demand that Sebastian awaken him. Two different versions exist with regard to what would have happened next.

In the first, Sebastian would break down and admit that he made an error years earlier and resulted in Tyrell's death and in a rage, Batty kills him. In the second Sebastian reveals that years before (estimated as 2013) a blackout struck the city, and during the approximately forty-five minutes the power was out, Tyrell's life support failed and he died. Again Batty is struck by despair and feeling there is no hope, he kills Sebastian much as he did in the finished film.

So a young new character has to find a legendary person that has been missing for decades and may be society's only hope. Sound familiar? :hehe:

I'm honestly not digging the synopsis. Especially in the context of the teaser, where Gosling finds Deckard.

Which should tell you the movie isn't really about finding him but uncovering the buried truth.

The synopsis felt weird to me too but who knows what the film will actually be about...

Well the first film was about a Blade Runner finding and killing a group of rogue replicants... but was that all it was about?

I'm curious why Gosling's character is known only as "K." I'm guessing that means he's a replicant, but unlike Deckard, he is aware of that fact?

A slightly different version of the synopsis was released in the recent article for Entertainment Weekly.

"Forces him to question everything he's ever known," huh?

Between that, the "long-buried secret" and other comments featured in the EW article mention how there's a seed in the original film that laid the foundation of the main premise for this film, it's almost definitely something to do with the idea of there being more replicants on Earth than we're lead onto believe or that those in power on Earth are actually replicants themselves.

Yup. It's gonna be something that continues to blur the lines between human and replicant, while possibly also factoring into the dystopian setting too.

I'm betting it's an allusion to the works of Franz Kafka. Two of his protagonists were named "K" ("Josef K." in The Trial and just "K." in The Castle).

Or Phillip K. Dick. Though I prefer your Kafka analogy.

Digital copy of one of the replicants from the first film? I hope it's not true. :(

If used extremely sparingly, it could throw some interesting monkey wrenches into the narrative and raise some fun questions for both films. I've got a lot of faith in the filmmakers right now, so I'm on board with the rumor.

Sounds like another chance to use digital capture.

Maybe a CGI Roy batty?

Deckard is in Ireland!

I like it. I think Earth ruled by replicants, bluring the line between human and replicant or the opposite, showing how human are in a fact obsolete, could be really interesting topics to explore in this film.

I expect ''they are Replicants/android'' being repeated to explain why the cgi looked fake.
