Blade Runner 2049 - Part 1

I've seen a lot of people complaining about how it doesn't look as overcrowded and sparse compared to the first movie but that is because most of the humans have probably gone to the off world colonies.
Sean Young must be pissed.
Young is going to turn up at the WB lot in a homemade robot costume lobbying for herself to be digitally inserted into the film :woot:
Bless him. Didn't he badly break his leg making Star Wars as well? Then the plane crashes... He's been battered in recent years lol.
Ford almost crashed his single-engine Husky plane into a Boeing 737 earlier this year as well.

I have a theory that [BLACKOUT]Replicants have taken over most of the population, with only a few humans left. But then the humans and reps don't know who's who, creating a Body Snatchers situation, with some folks being original replicants, and others being copies of their human selves.

But then it creates the backbone of the story: what is it to be human and is it worth fighting this war?[/BLACKOUT]
I was thinking that as well.

So which version of the original is the best in your opinion?

Ranked based on personal enjoyment:

1. Workprint
2. Final Cut
3. Director's Cut
4. International Version
5. Domestic Theatrical Version

I'm not so much talking about green screens as I am post production CGI effects tacked onto practical environments. The street below was a practical set, yet the backdrop and lighting is totally CGI. The front entrance to the vintage casino has changed dramatically. Not necessarily for the worse, but its a big change.

Thats just five months difference worth of CGI post production, now how different are the scenes we got today...going to be on october 6th? I'm not sure how much say Denis has on this post production fx work, considering he doesn't even have final cut.

This is common for trailers. Most times final textures and final layers haven't been applied to every vfx shots that end up in trailers. In some cases the shot the trailer editors need still has green screen elements and they have to composite in a temp element to cover the greenscreen element so that the shot is useable in the trailer. That's most likely what happened with that shot in the December trailer. It was an unfinished shot so the vfx guys threw in a temp background element so the shot could be used in the trailer. Since then they have finished the shot and replaced the temp background.

For me--

1. Director's Cut.

... That's it, that's the only one I've seen. It's good, though!

Deakins + Villeneuve + Blade Runner = MAGIC.

And I must give mad props to Jóhann Jóhannson for his score too. What an amazing rendition of the classic Vangelis theme I must say. Hearing this further ramps up my confidence in Jóhannson composing an epic score for Denis' Dune adaptation.

As for Roger Deakins, is it true he's been nominated for an Oscar 13 times and still no breakthrough?! That's truly criminal if true. :nono:

Such a gorgeous trailer too. Some have complained that it's perhaps a little lightweight, but being an 'R' rated feature, is there a possibility in us all being treated to a Red Band Trailer in the foreseeable future?

I'm loving what I'm seeing in this new trailer. I especially liked what I saw from Leto. Yeah, his Joker sucked, get over it. The guy is still a great actor and capable of delivering amazing performances. Besides, I blame Ayer more for the Joker thing than Leto because all of the other characters in Suicide Squad sucked too.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but you can tell the person smashing through the wall when Deckard is running is
K. You can see his jacket and it's Gosling's shape.

So it seems he's a replicant and this could be found out early on in the movie.
And he seeks out Deckard because perhaps Deckard has already known about this, hence him in hiding in the Vegas wasteland.

I have a crazy-ass theory about the nature of certain characters.

As Wallace's character says near the beginning of the trailer, he can only make so many replicants, right? Presumably replicants are incapable of breeding. Later in the trailer, he says this: "The key to the future has been unearthed. Bring it to me." There must be something vitally important about K and/or Deckard, something which would benefit the longevity of this new civilisation that Wallace seems intent on building. What if K was Deckard's son? And the reason Joi describes him as special is because he's the first known replicant offspring? Maybe Rachael died in childbirth and the 6.10.21 date carved into stone is simultaneously her date of death and K's date of birth. That might explain why K shrinks away upon seeing the date. Ridley Scott did say that the year in which the film's set was dependent on Gosling's age.

It's a stretch and I'm really just going off a few lines of dialogue, but it would be interesting. Whether they're related or not, though, I still think the primary concept of the film will be that the population is comprised mostly (and unknowingly) of replicants and that K discovers this.

Apparently someone is hunting K and/or Deckard. Apparently that someone is working for Wallace. Woman with a bob haircut. How does that align with your theory?

[blackout]Maybe breeding replicants is an issue? Rather than solution? In a sense that building replicants is a business, if there's no need for that, someone will lose power.[/blackout]

I'm not a fan of yours or mine theory, since it's not really what BR is about for me, but we can speculate.

My theory is that Wallace wants Deck alive. We see in the trailer that Deckard is inside the spinner with Wallace's henchwoman, and K is in pursuit. There's gotta be a reason she didn't kill Deckard then and there.

Then
if K is offspring of Deckard, why would she want him dead? More of that, we see Deckard punching K. Unless it's some illusion and someone is playing tricks with K's mind. And in other scene K is crashing through a wall and apparently saves Deckard from explosion of the old Spinner. Deckard seems to be in hiding. From blade runners? From Wallace? K wants to keep Deckard from Wallace's hands? Why isn't he worried himself is he's Deckard's son?

I've only seen the DC and FC.

Director's Cut is my favorite. Once you see the FC you will probably prefer that one, just like everyone else :O

Interesting... something like this could be great.

Just watched the original again, and I'm so sad about Sean Young. With and Dune, she was damn beautiful, but due to public perceptions (and mental illness) of her later in life, it feels like she's a forgotten beauty.

The Final Cut is beautiful. It was cleaned up to the point where it looks like a modern day movie. it's surreal.

Also, unlike Lucas, it improves some of the VFX subtly. Like the shot of the pigeon flying away from Roy Batty's body was redone; in the original there was a weird continuity error where cuts to a bird flying flying away against a blue sky, despite it taking place during a stormy night.

I was thinking that as well.

I don't get the complaints about it looking sparse. Cause Sebastians street and apartment were pretty dead. In fact I think he was the only person living in the entire building. I got the feeling there were more than a few abandoned buildings in LA even back then. Plus the street level bar area shots look plenty crowded in 2049. So that's people just reaching hard for a reason to whine.

Did anyone else kind of feel a sense of severe awkwardness during the Q&A session? The moderator kept on saying weird forced lines from the movie. And Ryan looked like he just woke up, threw on clothes and got stuck in LA traffic for half an hour before showing up. Whereas Harrison looked physically prepared, but mentally was not thrilled about being there. I know I wasn't the only one who was bummed at how cringey it turned out. Denis was there...but wasn't really involved much. Can't blame them too much though...it was a monday morning. Gosling also repeated similar lines that he has said in the past about harrison rolling up his sleeves and getting to work. Their eyes kept going to the same spot so I feel like this thing was not well thought out.

Ford has always been awkward during public appearances. Apparently he has social anxiety.

Also he smokes a lot of weed, sometimes right before interviews, but I think he stopped due to his age.

An actor with social anxiety disorder. You'd think it would be the last profession they would seek out.

Some just really like the art of acting, but don't necessarily care for the celebrity surrounding it, including going on press junkets. I think Bradley Cooper is the same way.

I was going to argue this point, but come to think of it, I'm inclined to believe all the characters I liked were due to performance more than anything. Waller, Deadshot, Harley, even Boomerang.

And it was pretty cool how subtle they fixed up that Zhora stunt through the shop window too. So subtle you wouldn't have noticed the touch-up that is - if you've never seen the movie before.

A lot of actors are insecure, or introverts. It's acting that gives them that release, because they genially love it.

Some can be bashful during interviews but flashy when acting.
