Blade Runner 2049 - Part 2

But critics didn't like Blade Runner all that much when it originally came out FA. :sly:
The "right" cut didn't come out theatrically either. I've seen snippets of the revised bits, and I'm not surprised at the initial lukewarm reactions.

I am surprised Consona has TDK and DOFP in his top five. Both films commit the sin of being liked by critics.

I like it, too :)

Already have my tickets for Thursday night in IMAX, can't wait. And I'm so glad it's not in 3D. Only wish the soundtrack was available that night instead of Friday.

I haven't watched it because as far as I'm concern if a film needs to release multiple cuts then something isn't right with it in the first place. Plus I've heard people tell me it's just boring, so I just kinda avoided it.

The reason the film has multiple cuts is because the producers took the film away from Scott during editing. They were worried the film was too dark and too complex for audiences, so they reshot a happy ending and added a bunch of horrible voiceover the plot for the "dumb" audience.

So that's the theatrical cut. There was also an international version that was identical to the theatrical except for a few added seconds of more graphic violence. In 1986 CBS created a TV version removing most of the adult content. An early work print was released years later, but it was very rough and not intended for viewing purposes.

It was until the director's cut in 1992 that a version more closely resembling Scott's vision was released, but due to time and money constraints (and Scott's obligations in finishing Thelma & Louise), it was overseen by someone else and still was not a true "director's" cut.

Only with the Final Cut was Scott able to craft the film exactly as he originally envisioned, with producerial interference, money restrictions or other prior commitments. This is the true version of the movie, and what would've been the theatrical and only version necessary.

Harrison looks a bit more sorry here than interviews suggest he was.

Gotta admit Gosling played it off like a boss. Ford looks mortified while Gosling is barely containing a ****-eating grin.

Ryan knows that getting punched by Indiana Jones is a badge of honor!

I keep seeing BLADE RUNNER 2049 articles wherein the author seems baffled at the "staggered" press screenings WB's doing for the film.

WB's showing the film to 20 ppl here, 50 ppl there. If there's a complaint, it's that this creates a weird clusterf**k of embargoes.

Unlike IT, however (which also had a staggered press screening rollout), I think there's a clear method to the madness on BLADE RUNNER 2049.

Namely: sooner or later, some dips**t critic is going to casually reveal major spoilers from the film, which WB is fighting hard against.

My theory: staggering these press screening isolates reviews into waves, and when the aforementioned dips**t does what he's gonna do...

...it'll make it all the easier to track the spoilers to the source. Added bonus: reduces the speed with which spoilers may drop.

PS: was just privately pointed out to me that Alcon is likely driving the secrecy, not WB. Fair enough! Just happy to see a film respected.

Variety and Guardian reviews are apparently filled with spoilers

I have no respect for critics who can't properly critique a film without spoiling it. I Definitely won't be reading any reviews for this.

I think most reviews are filled with spoilers. It's quite possibly a movie that can not be reviewed without getting into spoiler territory. Early tweets from several critics warned us about it. They categorically warned us to stay away from full reviews. I'm sure myself and Fallen Angel even posted about it. Go in fresh if you're interested, that's what the critics are trying to say.

I've read a few spoilerish reviews. But I don't think they revealed the BIG spoilers. Just things that could be figured out from the trailers.

But yea I don't need to read any more reviews.

Staggered screenings and embargoes are hardly a new thing.

Disney and Lucasfilm for Star Wars refuse to hold any press junket screenings. Instead they just have early advance screenings to media the week they come out and they want any reviews to refrain from talking about any plot specifics before the movie comes out.

Hype for this just went through the roof!

Also, what's "disturbing" about a film that looked great from its very first trailer (or even director announcement) to get good reviews???

I mean, really?!

It's still a big budget sequel to a beloved classic, and it's tough when you are dealing with such a scenario.
