Blade Runner 2049 - Part 3

I don't think that Blade Runner is perceived as a film for the masses.
I think that it is considered a niche property.

I was just about to type something to this effect.

I think as soon as a movie starts incorporating existential and philosophical themes and emphasizing them then per definition it makes itself far more niche and unlikely to resonate with a majority of people, and that's okay. A movie's success doesn't need to be boiled down to how much many it made or how many people find it appealing. It should really be judged more on how many people who are interested in it and understand its context enjoyed it, and for BR2049 that seems to be the overwhelming majority of fans who saw it.

Yes we're a niche group. I mean those who like nay love the first movie.

this movie will find his audience somewhere. just like first one did. but it's a sad world where this bombs and transformers still make billons.

It'll probably have the same level of adoption as the previous one did, and whoever watches the first and enjoys it will ultimately want to watch the second as well.

Unfortunately the GA really wants moderate escapism with a lot of sensory stimulation in their blockbusters, any movie that doesn't provide that is unlikely to become a financial success.

Great film.

Give. Roger. Deakins. The. Oscar. NOW!

Yeah I dont think I praised the visuals enough in my first initial reaction, simply stunning film to look at and it does a great job of transporting you to a different world much like the first. No other film has come close on that front I have seen this year (which granted isnt that many, but still, wow).

And lawd if Ana de Armas is not heavenly on the eye's and ears too. Just need to take a moment for her as well, a true Joi indeed.

I just can't get over this movie. It's stayed with me so much. It's been a long time since I went to bed thinking of a movie I just saw and waking up thinking about it. It's the work of an artist with a vision of telling a story. It's not setting anything up, it's not trying to kick start a brand. It's just telling a great story with a beginning, middle and end. The deliberate slow burn, the noir, mystery of it. Thought provoking ideas. These are things we just don't see released anymore on a level like this. You would think this would have been a television show now but I'm just glad this is a movie. This are what movies are supposed to do. Fire on all cylinders. A lot of movies now are just good with great qualities but never a film that inspires just from how excellent it is. This is a movie that I hope inspires a 13 year old to become a storyteller. I haven't come across a movie like that in theaters in quite some time.

Jesus, I think this is better than the original. And I never thought I would say that.

Who thought Blade Runner 2 would be this kind of movie? I certainly didn't.

Whoa! Leto's Niander Wallace was originally planned to be played by David Bowie!

Leto did a serviceable job I'd say, but Bowie would've been a very interesting choice.

Sounds like his role got largely cut.

For the best. Despite it's length and slow pacing, I didn't find myself getting bored or wanting it to speed up...except for Leto's scenes. When he's on screen, it feels long and I found myself begging for it to move on.

I wasn't feeling Leto. He actually took me out of the movie.

He wasnt in it a great deal to effect me but I thought his scene with [BLACKOUT]Deckard[/BLACKOUT] was great and intense as hell thanks to him. It was that [BLACKOUT]shoddy CGI Rachel[/BLACKOUT] that was the only thing that took me out the film at any point.

I'm in a 600 seat theater auditorium and there are about 15 people in here. Not good.

Makes sense. He kind of just disappeared from the movie and I expected more of a resolution to his character.

He can have his moments but he annoyed me in all his scenes.

I actually thought the CGI in that scene was good :hehe:

He knows Denis Villeneuve wouldn't stand for his crap and so no complaining. Also he doesn't do Extended versions. So whatever was filmed in the movie and the short movie is all the Leto you'll get.

Man, I really feel bad that this movie is underperforming but not surprised. It doesn't change that this is an excellent filmt but it still stinks. I wonder though, what changes could've made to the movie without compromising its integrity and tone that could've helped it be more accessible to audiences? I mean, if audiences embraced DUNKIRK, which is way more of a unconventional film than this is, then surely there could have been a way, right?

Then again, Dunkirk was like 80 mins long so it had the benefit of being a swift film with lots of movie showings to boost its BO.

Just 29% of the OD/OW audience was female. That doesn't bode well for long term BO prospects. While 65% of the audience was over 35 yrs and 86% was over 25 yrs. Older skewing movies generally tend to have fantastic legs but the way Friday (a staggering 31.4% came from previews) and Saturday (dropped from true Friday) behaved makes me very skeptical. The decent Sunday hold is partly due to public holiday on Monday so it got a boost and doesn't reflect a change in WoM. I wonder what lies ahead.

I took my 21 yo sister to see it and I had to explain a fair bit of it to her. A gritty cyberpunk depressing movie that requires thinking just isn't going to have much appeal to women, but moreso the general audience. Ghost in the Shell didn't do too hot either and that was even pg 13. The difference here is GitS is very average and BR2049 is great. The quality of the movie and even the ratings didn't make a difference here. Cyberpunk is just really niche and doesn't draw in your average joe...

I must ask. What about a gritty cyberpunk depressing movie that requires thinking is more appealing to men as opposed to women?

We the international audience did our part. As usual the US messes it up.
