Arrival is your first science fiction film and now you are already doing another one. What are your favorite sci-fiers?
I had been wanting to do sci-fi for a very long time. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a movie that really impressed me as a teenager. And also Blade Runner. And Close Encounters of the Third Kind is also one of my favorites. Im always looking for sci-fi material, and its difficult to find original and strong material thats not just about weaponry. A longstanding dream of mine is to adapt Dune, but its a long process to get the rights, and I dont think I will succeed. Also I would love to write something myself. I have two [sci-fi] projects right now that are in very stages. Its too early to talk about them.
And do you have final cut on the Blade Runner sequel?
I agreed to do it because the producers behind Blade Runner [Broderick Johnson, Andrew A. Kosove] are two friends. I made Prisoners with them, and I knew the environment they would create around me would be very secure. I dont really have final cut on it.
The thing I realized about final cut, is its the power of the best cut. I didnt have final cut on Prisoners, but what you saw is the best cut. Sicario is a directors cut, Arrival is a directors cut. I cannot talk about it, I will see. My relationship with the people I am working with is very strong. At the end of the day what will win is the best movie.

Yeah but hopefully this isn't a political way of saying he's the studio's *****.
Oh definitely BR is more of a studio movie. But WB and Sony are just distributing it. Alcon are the producers like 'Prisoners'. It's like the Bond situation, Brocolli's are in control with the big studios paying for the rights. They don't have much say.
Also Ridley Scott is heavily involved (co wrote script and exec producing) and he takes no sh** from anyone.
He seems to be like Ridley Scott. Someone that understands and accepts the politics and the realities of the business and doesn't bite the hand that feeds.

I think he recognizes the role a good producer can play in the process and thataybe it is beneficial for him to be reigned in in certain areas. I think he's self aware enough to know that Enemy isn't what people are looking for with this movie.
True about Scott on Alien, but it seems like everybody has everybody's blessing these days. Stuff like that doesn't really have significance for me.
Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros. finally came up with a title for the sequel to the sci-fi fan favorite to the 1982 film Blade Runner. This one will be called Blade Runner 2049
