Blade Runner 2049

It's so hard to predict how this movie will do in a year from now. I think it has huge potential to be a runaway hit, considering the following the predecessor enjoyed when the 1992 cut surfaced. But then it's regarded as a highly influential and one of the best sci-fi films ever made, so some people will be highly skeptical.

I think this movie will live or die depending on marketing as well as the reviews.

Regarding Gaff the expression "they don't make em like they used to" fits perfectly. Subtle character, little screen time but with great touches and plenty of charisma to make an impression.
It's details like Gaff that makes the original so special. He's not a big part but he makes an impression just as everything else does. Every single element of the movie is interesting, every visual thing is apart of this fully realized tapestry. It's an absolute masterpiece of world building.
I think Gaff should be the Blade Runner chief in the new movie.
Yep!

I have to admit that EJO has aged pretty well.

His Gaff doesn't get enough credit. He's barely in the movie but was able to create this mysterious and weird character.

Seriously, how are they making this movie without Edward James Olmos reprising as Gaff?

He let Rachael and Deckard run, knowing what they are. He's actually their unsung hero.

I still don't think this movie will do well. It's a sequel to a flop that is now only a cult movie. It just seems reaching to the bottom of the barrel with this one. It could be good, but Blade Runner doesn't have brand recognition like they think it does.

Perhaps not, but its lasting and rippling effect on the cyberpunk scene are immediately recognizable. A sci-fi subculture that has enjoyed success through various properties over the years. If they can modernize it for a more mass appeal, this sequel is going to gain a far larger following than its predecessor.

Blade Runner may only be a cult hit... but its fair to say it's the biggest and most iconic cult film around.

I'm usually skeptical of these 30 years later sequels. But the world Scott and Co created has so much more potential beyond Deckard's original story. Plus look at the talent involved here. Villeneuve is one of the best directors around. It's got a top quality cast. It's got Roger ****ing Deakins! I think this film is coming from the right place. They have a story to tell, it's not just a vapid cash grab.

I dig the title.

I love Blade Runner, one of my favorites. But I am not sure that is fair to say. Influential? Yes. Biggest and most iconic? Eh.

Doctor Jones is being a Debbie Downer? No way. :o

I think it was a cult classic circa early 90's. I don't know. Then post-social media era, it has been cemented as a classic. It had to go through several channels to get to that point though, unlike other movies.

I sorta miss the old Doctor Jones. There is a fairly dramatic shift in attitude that saddens me. :(

Yet you keep appearing in this thread evreytime I and others post on here. Seems like you want to love Blade Runner like the rest of us Doc that and you're certainly interested in the movie. :funny:

Since the first movie didn't do well, but it was a freaking awesome movie, I'm OK with 49 not doing well.

Also, the last thing I need - Blade Runner franchise.

I don't think they intend to turn Blade Runner into some mega franchise.

If the movie makes a ton of money at the box office then I'm sure the studio might want to make more films but I'm not sure it would happen.

The first movie didn't do well because it was badly marketed.

They marketed Blade Runner as Indiana Jones hunting robots movie when instead it was a slow paced futuristic noir film that contemplated what makes us human.

People familiar with Blade Runner know what to expect from the sequel. It probably won't be iRobot with CGI car cashes and stuff.

I'm guessing modest success due to cult status and the fans it's picked up over the years. It's been long enough to build a solid fanbase IMO.

I wasn't even born, I think, when the original dropped. First time I watched this I was YA. One of my favorite films. I think there have been a lot of cases like this over the years. Blade Runner was ahead of it's time.

This won't be a franchise IMO. Ridley will see to that as long as he's live. Maybe we'll get a few graphic novels and comics in that universe though.

I agree with Doctor Jones. As I said on twitter, I think that 2049 is going to be the most over predicted movie of 2017.

Steven Seagal liked my tweet once. That's about the extent of what I ever did on that medium.

If it's a pretty methodical flick, it may get accliam but not box office. Unless it becomes a sleeper.

Thank you for actually responding to my post and not taking pointless digs at twitter that have nothing to do with anything. I expected you to give a reasoned response, it's too bad not all posters are like you.
