EP Daily Rundown for June 28, 2016

Today in the Rundown, we head to the Seven Kingdoms for the latest on Game of Thrones, have the first details on a new Harry Potter short story, find out about the delay of Batman: Return to Arkham, get new details on the big screen
Minecraft movie, shoot up the latest on Overwatch, have early intel about a new Avatar game, and finally, get some disappointing news about Xbox FitnessGame of Thrones has hit a new high. HBO has revealed that Sunday night’s Season Six finale drew 8.9 million viewers, the highest yet for the series. It’s also almost a million more viewers than last season’s finale, which means Game of Thrones is actually getting more popular as it continues, whereas most shows see their audiences dwindle over time. The fact that the new episodes have overtaken George RR Martin’s novels probably helped; no one knows what’s going to happen, even if you’ve already read the books, so there’s extra incentive to watch. Season Seven is already on the way and is slated to premiere in early 2017. The show will likely come to an end with its eighth season, which will hit the airwaves in 2018.

And over to a less violent fantasy world, fans of Harry Potter can sit back and read a magical new adventure. Harry Potter author JK Rowling has released an all-new short story set within her wizarding world. It’s called Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and tells the story of the young wizard who started the North American version of Hogwarts hundreds of years before the events of the main Harry Potter series. The short story is the second published by Rowling that’s meant to tie-in with the upcoming Potter spinoff movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which will also take place in North America. The story is available now from Rowling’s Pottermore website, and the film will cast a spell on audiences this November.
Batman is running into some major trouble in his latest game release. Warner Bros has delayed the new bundle Batman: Return to Arkham. It was slated to arrive next month, and would have given players new, remastered versions of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City for the PS4 and Xbox One, but now the developers say they need more time to polish everything. Warner Bros hasn’t named a new release window so there’s no telling how much longer we’ll need to wait, but it’s probably a good thing that’s they pushing the date rather than release an unfinished product; the last game in the series, Arkham Knight, was a complete debacle on the PC, filled with game-breaking bugs and glitches that took months of post-launch patches and updates to fix. It looks like the publisher doesn’t want to repeat the same mistakes with Return to Arkham. We’ll let you know when a new release date is named.

Mark your calendars, because we know when movie goers can add Minecraft to their inventory. The big screen film based on the massive sandbox game is scheduled to hit theatres on May 24, 2019. Like other big budget films, the Minecraft movie will be released in 3D and IMAX, and don’t be surprised if there are loads of clever tie-ins with the game. The film is expected to be a combination of live-action with CGI. There’s no word yet on who will star, but we do know that it will be directed by Rob McElhenney, who created and stars in the TV series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. 2019 might seem like a long way off, but it’s coming fast and many other big movies are already slated to be released that year, including Indiana Jones 5, Captain Marvel, and the Lego Movie sequel.

It looks like some of the best online gamers in the world may have chosen a new favorite game. After just one month on store shelves, the new online shooter Overwatch has overtaken the MOBA game League of Legends to become the most-played game in South Korean internet cafes. Online competitive gaming is more popular in South Korea than any other country in the world, so the fact that they’re now playing Overwatch more than League of Legends could indicate that the rest of the world will follow suit. Overwatch isn’t the first big South Korean hit for Blizzard Entertainment; they also developed StarCraft, which South Koreans play more than any other population, especially in the eSports arena. Expect Overwatch to get even more popular when it’s ranked competitive mode launches in the coming weeks.

Gamers will be able to bond with the alien world of Pandora in a whole new way. Marvel Contest of Champions developer Kabam is teaming up with Fox and James Cameron to create a new mobile game based on the blockbuster film Avatar.
It will be a massively multiplayer mobile strategy game set in and around Pandora, with players taking control of the humans, Na’vi, and other alien creatures. It sounds like this won’t be just another crappy mobile game; Kabam says it will have one of the largest development budgets in mobile gaming history, which seems appropriate given that Avatar is one of the biggest films of all time. The game will launch around the same time Avatar 2 hits theatres in 2018, and include content from both films. It will then be updated and expanded with new content based on the remaining three Avatar sequels, which are set to continue rolling out over the next decade. Yes, they’re planning to make no less than four new Avatar movies. I just hope audiences don’t get Pandora fatigue.

Microsoft is ending its bid to keep Xbox One gamers in shape, but they’re keeping the money. The Xbox One launch title Xbox Fitness is coming to an end. Starting today, it’s no longer available to buy, and a year from now, users who’ve already bought it won’t be able to keep playing. Yes, you won’t be able to keep playing a game that you’ve bought. As for why they’re killing Xbox Fitness, the game was never as popular as Microsoft hoped, and they say that it’s become unsustainable. Microsoft hasn’t revealed any plans to offer buyers a refund once the game goes offline, so expect plenty of backlash from angry consumers.

EP Daily Rundown for July 4, 2016

Happy fourth of July to all our fans in the US! Today, we celebrate independence with early details on a new Diablo game and the latest on Overwatch. We also get gory with Total War: Warhammer, wreck-it with new sequels from Disney. have an early look at the new season of Samurai Jack, get a post-mortem from Nintendo on Star Fox Zero, and finally, get scientific with the cool new Jupiter mission from NASA!

Blizzard hasn’t finished looting the darkest depths of hell. The studio has revealed that it’s working on an all-new Diablo project. That’s according to a recent job posting on their official website, which is looking for a game director to work on an unannounced Diablo title. The job posting claims that the new Diablo project will be a AAA game with a large development team that “leads the Diablo series into the future.” This could mean just another Diablo 3 expansion, or an all-new game like Diablo 4. The posting requests applicants have experience with “online games, action games, and/or role-playing games,” which indicates that the new Diablo project, whatever it is, will be in the same action-RPG genre as the previous games in the series. Given Blizzard’s lengthy development cycles, we’ll probably have to wait a while to find out more about the new project. It’s not surprising that Blizzard is looking for a new game director to lead the Diablo series; Diablo 3 game director Josh Mosqueira recently left the company after joining the team in 2011.

In other news from Blizzard, the studio’s most recent game Overwatch finally has a long-awaited feature on all platforms. The ranked competitive multiplayer mode is now available on both the Xbox One and PS4, following its release on the PC last month. This is one of the most requested features for the game. Ranked competitive modes are basically a more intense version of normal PvP based around a system of divisions and tiers, and players love them because you can rank up faster and collect more rewards than normal. Now that competitive play is out on all platforms, Blizzard can concentrate on new modes, characters, and other updates for Overwatch. Expect to see more in the coming months.

The Warhammer universe is getting a healthy dose of good ol’ fashioned blood and gore. The new Blood for the Blood God DLC is now available for Total War: Warhammer. It costs $3.29 CDN and makes the game a lot more violent, adding new, M-rated effects like blood spurts and limb and head dismemberment, along with a much more ravenous version of the game’s giant. This DLC actually raises the game’s age rating in most territories, and this isn’t the first time the developers have done this; blood and gore DLC is a staple of the Total War franchise, with many of the previous games splattering players with similar updates after launch.
Disney wants to keep wrecking it at the box office. The video game-inspired animated movie Wreck-It Ralph is officially getting a sequel, set to smash theatres on March 9, 2018. According to director Rich Moore, this time around, Ralph will bring his wrecking havoc to online gaming, which means audiences can expect to see plenty of references to modern video games alongside the classic arcade characters that populated the first film. Fans of the first movie are sure to be happy that a sequel is in development; Disney had hinted that they were working on one, but this is the first official confirmation that it’s on the way.

And speaking of animated follow ups, the best animated samurai on television is wandering back to the airwaves. The Cartoon Network has released the first behind the scenes footage for their upcoming fifth season of Samurai Jack. The animated chanbara series ended its run on television back in 2004, but the lasting popularity of the show and fan demand prompted the network to make more. The same creative team is back, and rather than pick up just after the events of Season 4, the new season will take place 12 years later, with an older and more jaded version of Jack continuing his quest to destroy the demon Aku. Since the fifth season is being made today, it will use a more modern digital animation process, although the team is doing everything they can to make sure it has the same look and feel of the hand-drawn original. The other big change is that the fifth season will air on Adult Swim, which means there will be more samurai-appropriate levels of violence and mature subject matter. The fifth season of Samurai Jack will begin later this year.

Nintendo thinks you should give a certain Wii U game another chance. When asked by Game Informer what the most under appreciated Wii U game is, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto named Star Fox Zero. It received mostly negative reviews due largely to its forced motion controls, which can only be partially disabled, and many players said they’d rather have a more traditional control option like the classic Star Fox games. Miyamoto says that if players approach Star Fox Zero without those preconceived notions, they’d like it a lot more. What do you think? Were players too hard on Star Fox Zero, or is Nintendo to blame for not giving you the option to disable the motion controls completely? Let us know in the comments below.

Miyamoto thinks that another Wii U-exclusive, Pikmin 3, was also underappreciated. He says that it’s the kind of game you have to play a few times in order to get the full effect, but most players don’t have time to let games sink in anymore. He adds that gamers are becoming consumable products that players beat and move on, so it’s harder and harder for games like Pikmin 3 to find an audience. Nintendo doesn’t have much time to dwell on the failures of the Wii U; they’re already working on their next console, codenamed the NX, due early next year.

The biggest planet in the Solar System is about to reveal its secrets. NASA’s Juno spacecraft is scheduled to enter orbit around Jupiter tonight at around 9:00 PDT. The probe was launched back in 2011, and although there have been several probes that flew by Jupiter, this will only be the second one in human history to actually enter orbit. It will study the atmosphere and environmental conditions of the gas giant, sending back more data than we’ve ever had, including how much water there is in the atmosphere. Juno will also let us know for the first time if Jupiter has a solid core; we’re still not sure if there’s rock under all that cloud, or if the whole thing is just a giant ball of gas held together by gravity. As with every space mission, there’s a chance that the probe will burn up when it tries to enter orbit, so its five-year journey may end up being for nothing. If you want to be on the edge of your seat and watch the orbital insertion unfold live, click here to watch the official live-stream from NASA’s mission headquarters. The stream begins tonight at 7:30 PDT. ,

So they're nerfing Torbjorn, but still nothing to stop the terror of Bastion. The easiest fix for Bastion that would make him a little less hellish to fight against, while still keeping him viable, would be to reduce his magazine size. Take it from 300 to 200 or something. That way the guy playing Bastion can't just fire forever and has to be more proactive in knowing when to shoot and the enemy team then gets an opportunity to take a whack at him while he reloads. That's an easy fix.

So I want to buy this game via Amazon, but it's $60 still. :(

I love Overwatch so much, but no ****ing way it should be a $60 game. It should have launched at $49.99 on consoles. I don't regret buying it full price, but it definitely could have and should have been cheaper.

Overwatch reveals new hero Ana

PC players can test her out today.

Ana-Reveal-Overwatch.jpg

Blizzard Entertainment has revealed Ana, a new playable hero character joining Overwatch soon. PC players can try her out starting today through a “Public Test Realm” accessible in the region/account area above the “Play” button in the Battle.net client.
Here’s a full overview, via Blizzard:
After hanging up her rifle for over seven years, one of Overwatch’s founding members is returning. Introducing Ana—a battle-scarred veteran who supports her teammates from a distance using a unique and highly specialized collection of weapons.
Ana’s primary weapon is her Biotic Rifle, which fires long-range darts that can restore the health of her allies or deal ongoing damage to her enemies. Meanwhile, her Biotic Grenade is perfect for a close-quarters clash, because it simultaneously heals teammates and injures foes caught in its small area of effect. (Affected allies will also receive a temporary increase to all incoming healing, whereas affected enemies can’t be healed for a few moments.) And if the battle starts to get out of hand, Ana’s side arm can fire a Sleep Dart, knocking her adversaries’ unconscious.
Plus, Ana’s ultimate ability, Nano Boost, transforms teammates into super soldiers, granting faster movement, increased damage, and resistance to enemy attacks.
Watch a set of trailers for Ana below.

Nah. Most have already gotten hundreds of hours out of it, and with the future DLC being free. There is more value in this game than most other games out there. It's worth every single penny of $60 bucks. This is one of the most addictive games I've played in quite some time. That and Blizzard supports their games long term, not just for a year or so.

I enjoy Overwatch, but I would hardly say it's worth "every penny". It's a multiplayer game with only TWO game modes, for crying out loud. I really don't get why this game gets a pass on that while other games with more to do gets blasted for not having enough.

It absolutely should have been cheaper.

So glad they're limiting to one character per team. No longer will I have to fight a wall of Bastions or Torbjorn's! That's how competitive should be. Good for Blizzard.

It gets a “pass” because it’s a game with a lot of depth and like I said above most easily sink dozens of hours into. Game value is not determined on how many gameplay modes, or maps you can shove in there. Many games have tons of features but still suck enough where you don’t care to play most of them, or any of them at all. Also that and all the DLC/Characters being free was a choice to make people pay full due to the fact that they don’t want to separate the fan base with DLC and characters. Happens all the time in other games.

Value comes down to hours of enjoyment people get out of it. So if some are willing to pay $60 for a 14 hour single player game I’m sure many like myself have no problem paying it for a game that I’ve already put over 40 hours into.

A lot of depth?! HAHA! It has characters with different play styles, and three game modes. That's it. Hardly what I would could "a lot of depth". The *only* saving grace of the game that gives it any replay value is the characters. That's not enough to justify the full price tag. There are games that have just as much (if not more) replayability that get **** on despite having more to offer in the base game. People need to get their reasons for pitchforks straight.

Charging full price for a third of a game and justifying it by saying "hey!, we're giving out the dlc for free...look at how great we are!" is a joke. It's a $20-$30 game; they've just made us pay for the season pass up front.

That's a great way to put it. It's a $30 game with a pre-bundled Season Pass.

Yes, there is lots of depth in the gameplay. Again throwing how many numbers of gameplay modes does not equate to "depth". The gameplay itself is where the depth lies, the strategy, and again the endless fun. Yes there is plenty to justify it. You don't want to get it....don't get it. But millions have and seem satisfied with it. I equate the value to how much play time I get out of it not just the numbers you can throw on the back of the box. Because I've paid just as much for games that brag about how many gameplay modes or maps they have and I played them a fraction of the amount of time.

Blizzard is quietly fighting Overwatch toxicity

July 18, 2016 94 Comments

If you’ve started to notice that the community in Overwatch has started to turn vicious in the past few weeks, you’re not alone.

In an interview last week, Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan acknowledged that the longer a PvP game is out, the more some players’ “dark sides” start to emerge.

The good news is that steps are being taken to combat this developing toxicity and to encourage community togetherness.

“There are some systems that under the hood we’ve been tweaking as well,” he said.

A lot of this is very black box — and for a reason. We don’t talk about it because if we talk about it too much, players can exploit behavior.”

Overwatch’s Jeff Kaplan discusses future plans and competitive mode

July 19, 2016 23 Comments

A new Kotaku interview with Blizzard’s Jeff Kaplan has shed new light on the state of Overwatch — you know, the game everyone played before Pokemon Go eclipsed the sun.

The interview focuses heavily on the game’s competitive mode, which evolved from a planned pre-made 6v6 matchup to one that allows solo queuing, with rank rewards alotted accordingly, but he also talks future plans.

“We’ve talked about tons of basic stuff like getting rid of the coin flip and adding time bank to the payload stuff, but we’re really talking a lot about skill rating and trying to recalibrate how players think about skill rating for season 2 meaning right now,”

Kaplan said.

“We feel like a lot of the things we did in the UI and the numbers that we chose make players think if skill rating as a leveling system.”

He also rejects the idea that Overwatch is a MOBA and says Blizzard is working on toxicity, leavers, new levels, and new modes.

“My dream is that we could do something cool each month that felt not just like a balance patch, but actually felt like a meaningful content or feature delivery each month and somehow the heroes and the maps are kind of cycling as parts of those things in addition to other stuff.”

Question.

I consider myself a "not bad" player. I am not horrible and obviously not hard core great. I do well enough to enjoy the game and not be frustrated.

My question is... do PC players play with/against Xbox Players?

When I do die which is rare (I kid ..I kid) and I see how I was killed sometimes it amazes me the "lock" some of these people have on me, following me dead on. Like they are using a mouse.

Me, it is almost impossible to keep a steady lock on someone (moving) when using a Character like Soldier 76. My cross hairs are like all over the place lol.

Perhaps it is just me.. shaky hands? :)
