Boondock II: All Saints Day..hell yes!

There was a time I'd have gone crazy for this movie. Luckily.....that time is gone. That opening scene alone; what garbage. That cheesy solemnity, the baffling ass shots and awful music. I can practically hear the throbbing of Troy Duffy's hard-on in the editing room.

The opening is a little cheese, but it still looks like it could be cool. The brothers with their haggard beards was a little much. So they go into hiding and stop shaving for 10 years? .....right.

I'm still interested to see this though. I think from what I've seen so far the movie's biggest potential downfall will be that it might be full of itself and come off as more of a joke movie. The first one didn't have a fanbase yet, so it was like an actual movie that took itself seriously most of the time, whereas this one (judging from what we've seen) seems like more of a "nod" to the fanbase or just a "fun" movie. Kind of like "lawl we made a sequel!"

I hope the movie is at least semi serious and isn't just a bunch of jokes and **** relating to the first one.

The first wasn't anything special for me. So I'm really not expecting much.

Boondock Saints took itself seriously? Allow me to submit the "hanging upside down from the ceiling assassination" scene (they even joke about only seeing that **** in the movies). ...I didnt think so. And thats not a bad thing. It is a "fun" movie. If anyone is looking for a serious movie commentating on the state of our judicial system and normal citizens need for justice, Boondock Saints really isn't it. Go watch Law Abiding Citizen. And i would image that logic is a major reason why those that don't like it feel that way. Its a movie based solely on the desire to entertain, and nothing else.

I haven't watched the clip - I don't want to get a taste for it and be tortured waiting for a closer release location - but the idea that its cheesy doesn't bother me; MOST of the original movie is cheesy.

And complaining about the brothers sporting beards? Come on, thats a pretty pathetic complaint. For one, the constantly had a 5 o clock shadow in the first one, showing they really don't care about shaving to begin with. Second, they're completely outside normal society, and beards are mandatory. :cwink: Third, they're father has a beard. Sons emulate their fathers all the time - heck, the original reason I grew my hair long was because my dad had long hair. Its a natural thing. So, who cares if the boys are sporting beards while out in the wilderness? And finally, they're wanted for a public execution of a mob boss. EVERYONE is looking for them. Whats the next best thing to getting plastic surgery? Yup, growing a beard.

I loved the first one. But I'm not blind to its faults and "poor mans tarantino" style. I loved it for its cheese, its over the top violence, jokes, music, and countless attempts to shoot people in cool looking ways. The new movie could be a carbon copy of the original, and I'd still be happy. Why? Cause I know what to expect and I'm not expecting anything more than a fun and simple shoot 'em up flick.

It looks like what I was expecting. Which is pretty awesome. Balls to the wall action with some comedy tossed in for good measure.

The beards wasn't a problem for me, since they're dad looks the exact same way. It's the cutting of the hair montage that was cheesy for me.

But, it's clearly doing it on purpose so it's all good. Atleast in those first 5 minutes.

The first one didn't take itself that serious.

There were alot of funny moments in the first one. Alot.

Good Lord people, I'm not saying the first one was Shawshank Redemption, but it wasn't as "self aware" as this one is within the first 5 minutes. This one seems to be quite aware that it's a successful cult hit, so it plays to the audience a bit more. That's all I'm saying. I'm not saying it shouldn't be funny like the first one.

And to the guy crying about my beard comment, watch the video. I'm not even saying it makes the movie suck or anything, it just looks goofy as ****.

The Boondock Saints was ALWAYS a little cheesy. The "cheesy solmenity" is found throughout the entire first film. The movie never took itself completely seriously, especially when there was action or investigation, or plot unfolding.

I think the beards are a nice touch.

Granted, this is only five minutes worth...but how is any of this "self aware"?

The only thing I see off is the actual footage of the killings played during the newsreporter's speech.

I see the filmmakers doing what they did in the first film. Poking fun at the supporting characters while playing the Saints almost perfectly straight. With almost the exact same tone.

heh, so my light hearted commentary about the beards constitutes "crying" over you comment? givin your opinions a little too much credit, there bud.

The beard thing wasn't really a problem for me but I could of done without the ass shots. At least its only a brief part of the film i guess.

I know it's the first five minutes, and I'm not even saying that the rest of the movie will suck. And I also know the first movie has a lot of funny parts and has a comedic undertone; it's actually one of my favourite movies.

The only example I can think of that's similar to what I'm trying to say is Crank 2. While they are obviously not even close to being similar in tone, I just hope BDSII doesn't make the mistake of Crank 2 by overdoing stuff from the first one because they know people thought it was cool. As if it was a "movie for the fans". That's what I meant by self-aware.

Anyway, whatever...like I've said before I'm not even saying the movie will be bad, just stating a worry of mine.

And beard-guy...all I did was drop a comment on how the beards looked to be a little much. You then called my comment a "pathetic complaint", when it wasn't even a complaint in the first place. I don't want to waste either of our time with such a dumb argument. You think it's cool? Great. I think it could've been a little less, as it looks like they haven't even showered in the 10 years they've been away. Just a little goofy, that's all I was saying.

Just watched the first one again. Still really fun to watch. Here's hoping the second one is fun too!

IGN Review

October 29, 2009 - Writer/director Troy Duffy revisits the ultra-violent world of the MacManus brothers in The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, a longshot sequel that many fans of the 1999 original never thought they'd actually get. The sequel opens with the execution of a Boston priest in a manner that makes it look like the handiwork of the long-missing vigilante siblings Murphy (Norman Reedus) and Connor (Sean Patrick Flanery) MacManus.

Although the brothers -- who have been hidden away in their native Ireland (a ridiculously outdated and cliched depiction of the country) for the last decade with their hitman dad, Il Duce (Billy Connolly) -- know that the murder is meant to draw them out of hiding, they are all too eager to oblige the killer and mete out some vengeful justice in return. During the trip back to Boston, they encounter Mexican-American wannabe thug Romeo (Clifton Collins, Jr.), whom they reluctantly enlist as their sidekick (he serves much the same function as "Funny Man" Rocco did in the first film).

Meanwhile, FBI agent Eunice Bloom (Julie Benz), a sexy Southern belle and protege of the first film's now deceased agent Paul Smecker (Willem Dafoe), is on the trail of the Saints, finding herself in tow with the same three Boston detectives who aided the MacManus brothers last time around. The Saints (and the cops') quest for answers leads them to Boston crimelord Concezio Yakavetta (Judd Nelson), the son of the mob boss slain by the Saints at the end of the original film. Concezio wants his revenge, but it becomes clear to the Saints that there may be other nefarious elements conspiring against them besides Concezio.

The Boondock Saints II is a sequel made strictly for fans of the first film, one big valentine to them for making it such a cult phenomenon. Boondock II simply doesn't need to (or seems want to) appeal to anyone else. (You must have seen the original in order to get this movie.) And Duffy gives those fans exactly what they crave and then some: over-the-top, guns-blazing violence, music video-style sequences engineered simply to be "cool," and self-consciously written, darkly comic exchanges laced with as many pop culture nods and Boston references as they are F-bombs. (Think Quentin Tarantino crossed with Denis Leary; indeed, there's a whole speech about John Wayne that feels like it's been lifted right out of an old Leary stand-up act.)
Anyone other than die-hard Boondock fans, however, may find this sequel too over-the-top (in both action and humor) and too confusing (regarding certain characters' motivations) to fully enjoy. Some performances are so broad that they pull you right out of the movie. While Peter Fonda brings some gravitas and understatement to his brief appearance as the mysterious Roman, Benz is just a Whitesnake song away from sprawling on the hood of a sports car. Collins, Jr. bugs his eyes out so much that he could be a Tex Avery cartoon, and a loud and hammy Nelson appears to be getting line readings from Al Pacino on a bad day.

As expected, everything in Boondock Saints II -- the violence, the performances, even the soundtrack -- is gratuitous. There's the bare-ass opening montage showing the MacManus' transformation from Old Testament-looking shepherds back into their old selves, or Bloom's gun-twirling, stripper-esque fantasy where she imagines how the boys pulled off a massacre. There's an abundance of racial jokes and epithets hurled at and sometimes by Romeo. It's not so much that these are overly offensive (anyone familiar with Boondock Saints will tell you that you damn well better check your sensitivity at the door), it's that their execution is hit-and-miss and far too obvious.

As a Bostonian who spent part of his youth in Ireland, the Boondock Saints movies seem tailor-made for the likes of me, and yet I never quite warmed up to the first film or this one. I intermittently enjoyed Boondock Saints II for what it was (more than I liked the original anyway), but it's ultimately a sloppy mishmash of macho posturing, music video slickness, and indie film "cool" speak that, well, just doesn't sound all that cool post-1990s. Again, Boondock fans will probably love this movie, but they're also the only people who likely will or should bother to see it.

2.5 out of 5 Stars

Well, I liked what I seen in the opening footage, but then again, I am a unrepentant fan of the first film.

I put these movies in the same category as the Crank films. So I don't expect oscar quality performances, just some fun slathered with cheese.

I don't think he was too into the first one . The reviews have been consistent , which is a good thing . Anyone that was a fan of the original will most likely enjoy it but it's basically more of the same.

just saw it ! it was good, some of it came off cheezy. if your a fan of the first i think you might like it, but if u hated it this wont change your mind .....7/10

One of the more fun theater experiences this year so far. The crowd was full of Boondock Saints fans who got every reference, loved every character and loved every minute of the movie. I had a great time. make another one, and quicker than ten years will ya!
