Blackest Night #6: Issue #5 got me interested in this event again....well, this issue has me totally on board!!! Forget about all of those awful tie-ins that keep telling the same story, over and over and over again. Just pick up the main book, and stay with it long enough to get to these last couple issues. I LOVE the idea of the New Guardians!!! And, while it's a bit contrived for this story, I just let go and enjoyed the story. (If you think about it too much, you can get bogged down on why all these Black Rings should care so much about Earth....or, why when recruiting the New Guardians, do all the rings go to Earthbound characters....it makes this vast universe seem pretty small.)

Needless to say, it's easy to call this issue the Book Of The Week! (Not much of a challenge when you're the only book in town.) Still, if you are stuck with a week where you only get a single comic, it's not a bad one to be stuck with.

Punisher #12 - I finally got my hands on this book due to the delays from the holidays. FrankenCastle hits it's second issue in it's different but very interesting new direction. Some people say that it's Punisher Angel of Death all over again, I can't really say anything about that because I never read it. I do remember it was not well received. However, I love what's going on in this book.

Rick Remender is taking Punisher bravely into new territory by literally having Castle chopped up into itty bitty pieces by Daken (my personal moment of 09) then having him rebuilt by Spider-villain Morbius into FrankenCastle. While the name is a little silly, the characters in the book never refer to Castle by it yet. Now the catch to Morbius giving Punisher a second chance at life...they want him to become the protector of all of the Marvel U's monsters now living in and underground city (a la the Morlocks) appropriately called Monster Metropolis. MM was created by Werewolf by Night as a safe haven for the monsters from a Monster Hunter Death Squad led by Hellsgaard.

Hellsgaard and his troops are after a red jewel secretly in the possession of Morbius, which has very strong powers. The minister of MM confronts Morbius about getting rid of the jewel knowing that it's why they're all being hunted down, suggesting at one point giving it to Reed Richards. Morbius beleives the jewel safest in his hands thinking he's immune to it's powers although since he's had it he has not had to drink blood in weeks, something the minister strongly points out. Morbius quickly sees the error of his way when Hellsgaard and his troops raid the city killing everything in sight.

Meanwhile, Frank struggles with his new body, needing to take pills from Morbius that keep his mind more human than monster. He wants to be left alone but is stuck in the city since he needs the pills Morbius provides. He forms a bond with a Moloid child that ends when they city is attacked and the boy is killed. Frank, holding the child in his arms while the kid dies suffering and afraid, looks up at his attackers as the issue ends. It's undoubtedly ass kicking time for FrankenCastle next month.

Tony Moore's art is solid and it compliments the tone of the story perfectly. I highly recommend this book. I know folks want Punisher shooting mobsters all the time and if this was the only Punisher title I could understand why people would be annoyed by this. If you want conventional Punisher pick up the MAX book (which is also been very, very good since it was relaunched by Aaron and Dillon). But if you want something bold, refreshing and interesting...pick up FrankenCastle and try not to judge it by its goofy name.
