BOUGHT/THOUGHT for Wednesday, February 14th

To the best of my knowledge Whedon is on RUNAWAYS after issue #25 and no word has been given as to how many issues he is doing; certainly I've not heard it only to be six and was under the impression that the title is his for the forseeable future.

I wonder if he may shift Hisako/Armor there, at least for an appearence? I've seen other writers truck out their creations endlessly to cement them, why not Whedon?

The one thing Joey Q has done that i totally agree with is getting behind runaways. There is no way even he would be stupid enough to give an ongoing title like this such a chunk of time if he didn't have at least twelve issues under contract. It would be a pointless exercise as the mass jump off of short term fans viewing it as if it were a mini would result in the title's cancelation. Whedon will be signed up for 12 minimum

THOUGHT:
52 #41 - The three major subplots move forward in their own ways, drawing everything closer to the end. A little light this week, but still good.

AMAZING SPIDER-GIRL #5 - I love the old school feel of this book. It's just great. THIS is how you do Spidey right. Not the crap in ASM or USM or CW. No. THIS is Spidey. It had a slow start, but ASG is becoming everything SG was and more.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #20 - Another good book. The characterizations are outstanding. Wolverine comes off better than he ever has in this series, showing he actually has a brain behind the claws. PLUS! His healing ability is shown at a DECENT level! Also gotta love Armor and the reminiscent interplay of the old days when he was a mentor to Kitty. All that overrides the fact this is another X-Book in space.

AVENGERS EARTHS MIGHTIEST HEROES II #6 - The wedding of the Wasp and Yellow Jacket! And the Circus of Crime is gonna crash the party! Old school art, old school story, seamless continuity...love it.

BATMAN #663 - Didn't bother to read this yet. I need to have a certain frame of mind to read something entirely of prose.

DARKMAN VS. ARMY OF DARKNESS #3 - Who better to help take down Darkman than his greatest foe; Robert G. Durant! The pacing is still too fast for my liking and the dialogue with the deadites is just a tiny bit cheesy, but I think so far I enjoyed this issue the most out of the series.

EXILES #91 - Psylocke vs. Sabretooth! Mysteries surround Psylocke but need to wait as the team has a mission to finish and teammates to save. Okay, second issue in and so far the book hasn't suffered any. With Claremont's name on the book I was a bit worried over it's fate, as his game ain't what it used to be. So far, he's doing alright. So far.

JSA #3 - Meet the newest member: Cyclone! We learn the connection between the murdered families and the new Reich and the team heads out to stop the baddies. Now, it may seem a bit predictable, but I think our resident cripple is about to become the final new member for the team via some silver spit. So far, I'm liking the book despite my lack of familiarity with the members who hadn't been major characters on JLU.

MARVEL ADVENTURES FANTASTIC FOUR #21 - Thing is unappreciated, so he heads off to take over the Mole Man's kingdom! Chaos ensues. Good issue, reminiscent of a classic FF tale and done-in-one. Can't beat that.

NEW EXCALIBUR #16 - Claremont's back, and I dunno how I feel about that. He's mucking around with TJ, whom I particularly liked from Exiles. Of course I'll wait to see how it all plays out, but I hope he's not gonna get rid of her in any way, shape or form. Plus, I hope Claremont can keep the entertaining style Tieri brought to the book rather than the boring stories it started off with under him. Art-wise, I preferred the other guy, but it's passable.

NEW X-MEN #35 - References already being made to X's new mini, she and Hellion head on out and tack down their teammate. Always a good book. I feel bad for Mercury, though. She won't be the same after all this.

ORSON SCOTT CARDS WYRMS #1 - Second printing? I didn't even see the FIRST printing! Anyways, another book I dunno what to make out of. These Dabel books all have their own strange universes and very little background to them, so basically you jump head first into a strange new world.

PUNISHER PRESENTS BARRACUDA #1 - Apparently so popular he warrants his own mini, but it's not an appearance BEFORE his story in Punny...but AFTER. Geeze, what's it take to kill this mope? All set-up right now and a helluva lot of cursing. At least the writing is consistent...'Cuda annoyed the hell outta me as much as he did in Punny.

SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #35 - The second Back in Black issue. Once again, Spidey apepars in the black costume and this time we get a mild allusion to the final page of the last ASM issue. But still, no explanation. Also, someone's making people into Spidey with varying degrees of success. Interesting set-up so far, and the art fluctuates from bad to good between panels. Given the kinda stories Roberto's been bringing so far, I'm willing to give him a shot at wowing me.

SPIRIT #1 & 2 - Picked up after numerous recommendations, the Spirit's pretty good. A little off-beat with an old-school style to it. I'll admit I dunno much about the character, but I think I'll stick with the series for a bit.

THUNDERBOLTS #111 - Not liking this new direction at all. Taking the simple premise that worked, bad guys who wanted to be good, and turning it into a mix of bad and former good guys who now work for a BS government that's dumb enough to hire Norman Osborn. The only thing I liked about this issue was how it took a virtual unknown like Jack Flag and made him kick some serious ass. Under Ellis, Flag mighta become a B-list character. Instead he was just fodder to show this new team in action. T-bolts no more.

THUNDERBOLTS PRESENTS: BARON ZEMO #1 - The last T-Bolts team gives a final go in this mini that explains what happened to Baron Zemo. Not too bad, but a time story can end up uber complicated. Plus, kinda convenient a guy doing a paper on Zemo was able to stumble accross that formula and theory that just happened to be on the money.

ULTIMATE X-MEN #79 - The funeral for Xavier, very nicely done. Best issue of Kirkman's run so far.

WOLVERINE ORIGINS #11 - Another issue that shows Wolvie's mental capacity and skill, but still overall the series suffers from decompression and that mis-matched art. And of course, Cyber returns?! Anybody else sick of resurrections yet?

Michigan didnt get its comics today, "Stuck in Cleavland"

to Hisako choosing her codename ("Armor", which is the most blunt codename after "Speed". What next? Strong Guy? Oh, wait...how about an invulnerable guy named "Tough"? A mind reader named "Psychic"? Good god, is EVERY name taken?)
Okay, I don't think you can do this, when Whedon already played that bit in the issue itself. I just don't think you get to do this.

Also, thanks to everyone for actually reviewing comics, unlike last week's debacle. This is why I come to the Hype.:yay:

By that logic, JUMP THE SHARK in USM was awesome because even Bendis within the comic acknowledged how goofy it was.

I just am getting tired of some of the lame codenames of the post 2000 era. "Stature"? "Speed?" "Armor?" Even to some degree Gravity's hardly as classic. God, I'd rather Lightening Lass.

Okay, I wouldn't. I'm a very hard fanboy to please. Guess I can see why X-23 is keeping a f'ing serial number, because I'd bet not one writer could come up with a better name. She sounds like the production code for a toaster.

Where does it end?

A sharpshooter named "Guns"?
A elastic hero named "Rubber"?
A vampire named "Bite"?
A mage named "Spell"?

A SPEAK-N'-SPELL can do better. I guess I am just flustered at the trend. I'd almost sell my soul to the devil for a codename that didn't suck out of a new character these days. Superheroes never would have lasted 60 years if they had names like "Armor". Hisako is good, though.

And yes, this was the first issue where it being "X-Men in space" didn't matter, because it was good. Got to give it that too.

Also, thanks to everyone for actually reviewing comics, unlike last week's debacle. This is why I come to the Hype.:yay:

Welcome. Glad you got to start one too.

In proof that I am starting to "get it", I still haven't bothered to track down the last issue of X-MEN: PHEONIX: WARSONG that I missed. I figure, why pay $3 for an issue almost everyone said is bad for a mini that I deemed as crud almost at the start? There are better uses for my money.

i'm so proud of you. :yay:

alright i'm out. i gotta go get my groove on.

Green Arrow #71
Exiles #91
Zemo #1
New X-men #35
52 Week 41
Ultimate X-men #79 - Why do I still buy this? It was nice to see a semi tie in with Issue #1 though.
Asontishing X-men #20 - A Good read, but I'm really not enjoying this book like I was before.
New Excalibur #16 - The art in this book is phenomenal, and the story was quite good too, a nice return for Claremont, though I was more than happy with Tieri....I wonder if Claremont is going to aknowledge the stuff that Tieri did though.
Superman and Batman vs Alien and Predator #2

Batman: Face the Face TPB
I can't Believe it's not the Justice League TPB

BATMAN #663 - Didn't bother to read this yet. I need to have a certain frame of mind to read something entirely of prose.

Read it. Read it now. READ IT OR I'LL SLAP YOU IN THE FACE WITH A RUBBER CHICKEN FILLED WITH ACID!!!

...Dude. You kinda suck.

Barracuda's probably one of the best villians Punisher's ever had--he's so over the top a corrupt killer that you can't help but love the f**ker. :woot:

Man, that reminded me so much of a recent Kenichi episode where they introduced 3 villains. The first guy threw someone and said his specialty was that he was a thrower. Then another guy did a Chun Li imitation and said he was a kicker. I was really praying that the las guy beating people with his hands wouldn't say anything, but he had to go "I'm a puncher.":whatever: They should have gone with a Japanese word for armor or shield or something. Wasn't she called Hisako in the future the Runaways were told about?

I like Stature and Speed; I think Armor is clearly meant as a joke.

Yes, she was, although that reality was likely seperated from 616 when the Runaways pre-empted the birth of Victorious in the exact same way.

Did a search of Japanese words for "armor" and got: yoroi, kikou, gusoku, koutetsu, bugu.

Koutetsu sort of has a nice ring to it. And yes, taking the same word and just changing the language is plenty shallow, but it's something. And it's worked before.

I like Stature and Speed; I think Armor is clearly meant as a joke.

Sometimes Whedon's humor falls flat with me. Like the whole "beer cures brainwashing" bit. Even Seth Green gave that bit a pass on ROBOT CHICKEN.

But I liked this issue, and as I said, after months of USM & WARSONG, even the worst of ASTONISHING is godly in comparison to true garbage, and that is worth being reminded of for perspective. Whedon's comics haven't been nearly as terrible as a lot of the drivel I have read, and I enjoyed the heck out of this week's issue.

Masked, didn't mean it sucked. Just meant it was consistent. And guys who talk like that usually end up with my size 13s up their rear, which's why 'Cuda annoys me so.

But let's face it, she's a teenage girl, and they can be not so clever. Since I'm pretty sure Whedon has the soul of a teenage girl, he wrote what one might come up with for a name, knowing it was lame, so he had Wolverine make fun of it.

And Whedon's humor falls flat with you because you're lame.:o Seriously, everyone in the world liked the beer thing but you. It was cute! I'm not gay.

Oh you're a badass. A badass with big feet. You kick asses! And don't forget what big feet mean. They mean you have a big dick. You're so impressive to me.

There's nothing pretentious about size 13 feet, thank you very much.

Nextwave #12 - It's finally come and gone, and I know that a great many people hate the book, but I enjoyed it for just being goofy, and obviously teasing the genre. But, ... the last issue was better. It all ends in one horrible anticlimax, and then there's a sly grin into the camera. Psh.

Justice Society #3 - Besides not really knowing who any of these characters are other than JLU appearances and what Wikipedia can tell me, I'm really enjoying this book. The only member I know enough about to speak comfortably is Wildcat, and I would definitely read a solo book penned by Johns. However, Cyclone's character went from funny and cute to annoying really quickly and I hope someone redesigns her outfit. She looks like a damn Christmas ornament.

Ultimate X-Men #79 - Honestly, Kirkman's writing hasn't bothered me. He's thrown a lot of cliches out there hoping that something would stick, and he's made a lot of changes in nonsensical ways, but I think this might be a turning point. It's scary how clever his own book can be and how clunky this can be. Plus, he's not credited on the cover, which made me chuckle.

Astonishing X-Men #20 - This issue has a lot of great moments, but the timing seemed off to me. There was too much focus on the exploding ship, and then suddenly they find "The Palace of Corpses". Maybe it was just me, but I would've liked a bigger buildup to the enomrous Colossus mural, not that it isn't awesome, because it really is.

Sensational Spider-Man #35 - The second issue in which the costume change goes almost totally unmentioned, but, as I've come to expect from Aguirre-Sacasa's run on this book, the story will be so interesting, what Spider-Man's wearing won't really matter.

Hellboy Animated: The Black Wedding TP - Who can resist more Hellboy? Tell me. He's big, he's red, he's moody. Actually, most characters involved in this get a decent chunk of time to themselves, with the possible exception of Abe. I'm glad this universe is seeing the light of day, because the stories they have to tell have all beem excellent so far. The backup story with Lobster Johnson was, dare I say it, a hoot. The goggles and stubbly little chin were a nice touch.

Batman #663 - I'm a literature major, so prose is not the problem with me here. I don't like clowns. It hasn't developed into a phobia per se, but I really, really don't like clowns. Because of the creepy visuals in the book, I can't really read it. I feel bad for wasting my money, and hopefully I'll pick it up and do more than flip through it someday soon, but for now, I'll stick with summaries. Filthy, scary clowns.

I also picked up Ghost Rider #8, Loveless #15, and Cassanova #7, but I haven't gotten past Ghost Rider #1, Loveless #2, or Cassanova #4, so reading them wouldn't do me much good.

I thinks its time to reboot the marvel universe or at least get back to basics. Writers keep writing themselves into walls with crap storylines of other crap storylines. Also M-day was fine but now, do the x-men ever not fight aliens now? I honestly believe that out of anstonishing x-men, the rest of the titles should just be retired(hell give first class a permanent status). Dc at least has composure.

i disagree, man. completely.

marvel at least has some semblance of continuity and a shared universe. and each new arc in any given book is usually pretty good for jumping in on.

dc on the other hand has no concept of being reader friendly. i'm a smart guy, but trying to figure out continuity and the different earths is too much for me. that and every book seems to be in it's own little world.

I think that if it's gotten to the point where you can't read something because it has clowns in it, you have a phobia.

Meh. It's not like I start crying. I'd just rather not deal with them.

Did they explain how Cyber is back...you know...since the marauders used nano creatures to EAT him last time he was around. It's not like he could have survived off panel, since they ate the adamantium cuffs off of him so they could try to put it back into Wolverine.

I groaned when I heard that....see this is why I dropped this book...lame-o stories that don't explain all that much about Wolverine's past. It took six issues just for him to hear he had a son.

Mysteries are ok, but the reader does not want to feel like the book is hiding something from them the whole time. When it feels like you're left out of the loop in the story, there is something wrong there.

Grrrr...:cmad:

Welcome. Glad you got to start one too.

I agree that some of those codenames really suck. Something that's kinda annoying me is that in X-Men, Carey seems to have almost give Karima Shapandar the codename of Omega Sentinel. When Lady Mastermind called her Cybergirl, she made an off hand remark "If you have to call me something, call me Omega Sentinel, not Cybergirl." and people seem to be taking that seriously. That's what she IS, that shouldn't be a codename. Going off a suggestion you made, I'd rather they try and find a Hindu translation of Sentinel or something else, not Omega Sentinel. That's just begging to be labeled as not even trying.
