BOUGHT/THOUGHT for Wednesday, February 14th

i think whedon would be at his absolute best if he had a co-writer. someone to help with the plots.

but his characterization is superb.

I dont think he has a problem with plots though, he just needs to become a bit more original.

Well, admitting the problem is the first step.

I have all the Buffy seasons (except #7, hell no), Firefly, Angel, Serenity on DVD, I've bought everyone of his comic work. What qualifies as a real fan?

More Thoughts:

The Punisher - Barracuda #1: After reading Barracuda's appearance in Punisher, you just knew this extremely over-the-top character would be coming back. After surviving having his fingers cut off, getting shot, getting his eye stabbed, and being fed to the sharks by the Punisher, Barracuda is back to help a crimeboss make his hemophiliac, nerdy son look respectable to the others in his crew. The art is spot on for this type of book, and the dialogue works well with this Max miniseries. I was hooked with the original Barracuda storyline, and now I'm hooked with this miniseries. It might be the best book of the week. 10/10

Blade #6: This is a title just begging to be cancelled. I've read numerous books with Blade in them since the 70's, and this is the absolute worst. Even if the story was halfway decent (which it's not), the art makes you want to put it at the top of your burn-pile at home. (This artist really must love teeth. I've never seen an artist who's drawings of mouths and especially teeth are so distracting from the rest of the art in the panel.) In this issue, we meet Blade's supposed father and start to get his backstory on how he's survived so long. It's poorly told, and as I've said, I'm just counting down the days Marvel either signs a new creative team for this book or just cancels it. This probably is the worst book of the week...hell, even the month. 2/10

Superman & Batman Versus Aliens & Predator #2: In this final issue of the two-part miniseries, Batman and Superman attempt to save as many Predators and Aliens as they can, in order to shoot them off into space and back to their homeworld. That's the basic story, and in between the beginning and the end of the issue, Bats and Sups just try to stay out of the Aliens and Predators way. Kind of a big disappointment. It's sure not what you want out of an Aliens and Predator book. 6/10

Amazing Spider-Girl #5: As usual, May Parker must juggle her career as Spider-Girl, her obligations at school, and her deception of being Spider-Girl from her friends and family, all the while fighting with whatever bad-guy is guest starring that week. It's all very familiar, but the comic pulls it off well enough. I guess that's a partial gripe. You know what's going to happen issue after issue, and the clues on what will happen next are rather easy to pick up. (i.e. Jimmy wants Heather to dress up as Spider-Girl to sell his comic he's drawing at a local comic shop. Hmmm, I wonder if the advertising of Spider-Girl's appearance will cause a bad guy to show up in next week's comic? Of course!) I still like this book, but they really need to come up with some new plots. 7/10

Sensational Spider-Man #35: Part 1 of the 3 part story, in which someone is experimenting on people in an attempt to turn them into Spider-Man. Of course, things don't go as planned, as the procedure has undesired side-effects. Plus, Spidey is "Back In Black," but it's just a cheap publicity stunt by Marvel. The reasons for him being in the black costume aren't touched upon, and it just seems like another day in the life of Peter Parker. 7/10

Ghost Rider #8: Thankfully, the fill-in story and art from the previous two issues is over and we can get back to some good Ghost Rider action. This issue pretty much just sets up the events in a small town northwest of Chicago where some teenagers have been murdered, and Ghost Rider will obviously be getting involved. There is a Casualties of War logo on the cover; but, don't expect this issue to really tie-in with Civil War in any way. 8/10

I believe there needs be a lengthy, ritual sacrifice of a Charmed fan at some point.

Believe it or not, I actually don't like everything Whedon ever did. Season 3 of Angel was just a prolonged exercise in WTF up the rectum.

I'd kill a Charmed fan just for the hell of it.

We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you this following message concerning Spider-Man: Reign:

Radioactive spider-semen?

Radioactive spider-semen??

Gave MJ cancer??

I I I I what?

That just takes "sexually transmitted disease" to a place of utter whoa. Guess she's sorry about not using protection now.

(10 out of 10 for complete Bizarro wtf)

52: Week 41: Renee's the Question, and the Lanterns save Strange and Starfire. Better than it sounds, I'll grant it, even if it's no "Steel and co. humiliate Luthor". 7/10

Y: The Last Man #54: Focuses on two women trying to make a feminist action flick, which fails, so they decide to write a comic about a plague wiping out all women but one. At the end, Yorick reads it and decides it's mediocre. I'm sad that such a readable comic is coming to a close. It's just so much better than most of the other stuff on the stands. The preview for what is apparently a satirical comic called "Army @ Love" was pretty funny, too. 9/10

Unless that protection was lead lined, she was doomed from the start. :o

I'm suprised she didn't notice it earlier. You know, with the deteroiration, weak skin walls and massive amounts of bleeding from continually applied radioactive semen would have brought her.

Spider-Man Reign as a whole already gets a 10/10. I don't have to read the last issue. It showed the PenisParker. So 10/10 by default.

Nextwave oh my sweet Nextwave. Jack Kirby's Devil Dinosaur has been behind everything so far. The only thing that would have made this issue more perfect is Dirk Anger. Mr. Anger needs a mini ASAP.

i love kaare andrews. i wanted to like reign, but i just can't get into it. i know he's "inspired" by miller's batman stuff, but that's all i see when i read it.

Yeah but did it show Bruce's balls? Huh?

Yeah. You could actually bring the copy back, get a refund or the new printing without the almighty radioactive balls. Honestly though, who would want that?

i wonder if i get my copy graded if it'll be worth something down the road...

Did anybody elese like Green Arrow this week? I thought it was actually pretty good.

I've really have enjoyed that book as of late. The last couple of issues have been great reads.

I thought it was alright. Again, I didn't like Ollie getting pantsed since that one act was pretty much all that happened in the entirety of 2005 for him and all his training was supposed to prevent just this from happening again...but there was nothing wrong with the issue itself.

As a note, as someone who has now seen GHOST RIDER, I can say that as Mephisto actually IS in that film, Way's "non-retcon retcon" of the Lucifer thing in GHOST RIDER (the comic) is now officially worthless. I don't know why an editor couldn't have noticed or why Way couldn't do a friggin' 5 minute search on wikipedia, but thankfully this Jack O'Lantern story avoids the subject. It's the ONE THING that holds this incarnation of the Rider back. When a Hollywood production is more faithful to an origin than a relaunch, you need to recheck some facts.

Also read something random:

HELLBOY ANIMATED: PHANTOM LIMBS: This is the comic book that came with the box for the HELLBOY ANIMATED MOVIE: SWORD OF STORMS. Free plug; both that and THE AMAZING SCREW ON HEAD are excellent, easily better than the last DTV from Marvel/Lion's Gate (Invincible Iron Man) and I recommend both. Some may snort at paying $10 for a 22 minute cartoon like SCREW ON HEAD, but it's worth it. Both are loaded with extras, especially the Hellboy cartoon. Commentary, endless creation tracks, etc. As for the comic, it's naturally another random adventure for our favorite BPRD agents Hellboy and Liz Sherman, as they investigate an elderly amputee whose leg has suddenly become zombified. It has ties to the endless amputations from the Civil War era and leads to a slugfest with a "blood demon". Nothing too deep, but has the sort of fun quirky pulp stuff that you associate from Hellboy. I have to admit I've never actually read the creator's stuff, but I enjoyed the major motion picture, the DTV and this comic, so maybe one day I'll grab those Dark Horse trades. For a freebie, it does it's job.

how bad is the movie?

GHOST RIDER? It's not bad. Critics and some fans are bashing it, but it's a popcorn flick. If you overanalyze it and pick it to death for things like bad lines, awkward romantic scenes, etc., it falls apart, much like most 80's action movies. But if you just sit back and go with it, it's enjoyable. The film totally nailed Ghost Rider himself at least, and all those scenes are good. Frankly I enjoyed it a lot more than the critically overrated X-MEN 3.

i'll use my "movie test":

did you like the daredevil, elektra or punisher movies?

I liked DAREDEVIL and the Tom Jame PUNISHER film. As for ELEKTRA, it looked like trash, I really don't like the title character or Jennifer Garner, and gave it a pass. I wasn't alone. Frankly, out of the four films listed, I liked PUNISHER best (for being a modern Western), then DAREDEVIL by a hair, and then GHOST RIDER. All three have their strengths and flaws, and none are perfect. They all have their charms. Out of the three GR had the best effects and the scariest hero. It also is selling the best in terms of Box Office.

wow.

i was expecting (and hoping for), "no those movies were abominations, and ghost rider is nowhere near that level of garbage."

and to think, you have such great taste in comics. :cwink:
